Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

views are nice from the top , would have been great if cloudless

had subungal hematoma of my toes my feet tried to get a better grip
came out exhausted with wobbly thighs

After a long 2.5 hour drive from Blenheim, we arrived at the start of the track with the sun out. Took about 2 - 2.5 hours to reach the summit, the earlier sunshine gave way to patchy clouds at the summit. Still great views but unfortunately that patchy cloud became thick cloud and covered the summit.
A rough going track which could do with some work on it, but awesome views from the top

Important! Check the weather forecast before doing the hike Sadly, we missed out on the view at the 1203m summit due to our negligence. Probably because of the rain, it was foggy, really windy and cold up at the summit and we could not stay much longer (not that there was any view). Check the weather as while climbing down we met a fellow hiker who waited an hour plus for the skies to clear (apparently quite acuurate forecast) and got some really great views and shots. It took us about 4-5hr return journey, probably 3.5hr or shorter for the fitter ones. Track goes through the forest, steeply up till the summit with few open views. It rained on the day and it was damp, muddy and slippery. Almost slipped a few times while coming down so hiking poles may be helpful. Location for start of the track not very obvious, at some road intersection so have to park the car alongside the road, return is through the same route.

The way to the top of Mount Stokes goes straight through the forest and is very steep and not prepared. You basically have to follow the markers through an untouched forest. However, the view from the top is amazing and you can even see the north island.
It took us 1:30h uphill and 1:15h downhill, but that was the fastest we could go. Official duration is 5 hours return.
