We are an historical volunteer-run museum in the port town of Lyttelton. We lost our building in the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010/2011. But we saved most of the collection, which is now in safe storage as we advance plans to build a new museum in the heart of the community. We have secured a site in Lyttelton's main street and hope to re-open in 2020. Visitors will then once again be able to engage in the many stories of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupo.

Sadly the museum is still closed now, in January 2016, though it is clear from other reviews that its collections are safe and still in storage, pending a new display location.

The Lyttelton Museum, as a building, was destroyed in the earthquakes of 2011. However, 95% of their collections were rescued and are now safely in storage, awaiting a new building.

The Museum building has now been demolished. Fortunately the collections have all been removed and are presently in storage at the Air Force Museum at Wigram. Museum volunteers are now working hard to ensure that a new museum features in the re-build of our town....More
