We cycled the St James cycleway, about 67km in one day and rate it as one of the best NZ cycle trails. It had amazing scenery, very few people and very rideable trails. We left our car at the homestead and had St James Journeys...More

I would agree with the other mtb reviewers. This is a hard, grunty track and I pushed my bike quite a bit. I had just completed the Heaphy Track and then we did this one - much more effort required. Fantastic that the NZ Labour...More

Top trail for mtb enthusiasts. 99%rideable with some great downhills and grunty climbs. 5 hours of solid riding, though recommend you take it slower to appreciate the remoteness. Up there with The Old Ghost Road for me.

Beech forest, Robins hopping within reach and expansive views. Huts were really very good but take your own gas and cooking equipment. Superb!

This was a fantastic sub-alpine hike through valleys in the area. We went early January and there was room in all the huts. Well-marked and awesome scenery. Huts were excellent but need to bring own cooker - and sandfly repellent!

Backcountry area, with difficult access, requiring fitness, huge preparation and planning. It is remote and nothing should be left to improvisation.

Hanmer Springs was the perfect base for our group of botanists from Auckland. We drove up to the Clarence Rd each day to botanise at various spots. We climbed to the tops for fabulous views..

From Hanmer Springs you head into the hills and shortly are driving on gravel roads. (wouldn't recommend for camper vans) The road leads to the start of Molesworth station where you are into the tussock area. We saw a few hares running about. A left...More
