- DuncanGreenock, United Kingdom38 contributionsVery relaxingSpent two hours in the Thermal pools. Staff are very friendly and the changing facilities are clean and modern. The pools were not too busy as it was before the start of summer school holidays. Nice restaurant within the complex.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 December 2022
- KevBenChristchurch, New Zealand10 contributionsThe main reason to visit HanmerMany changes since my last visit and pools were very busy. Long queue to get in at 10.30 but didn't seem crowded once inside with many secluded pools. Hydroslide, Super Bowl and Conical Thrill rides were very popular and included in the admission priceVisited December 2022Written 30 December 2022
- CarolynWellingtonNZLower Hutt, New Zealand140 contributions24 pools of varying temperaturesA lovely time can be had here as you can bring toddlers and children as well as adults. I find two hours is plenty to spend here not including the time at the cafe. It is easier to wear togs under a track suit. Don't forget a sunhat as you won't be diving under water. More likely for adults to sit sedately in the sun. No shade. I found it expensive, but I think there is a day pass, and it is cheaper for seniors.Visited September 2022Written 8 January 2023
- SassyggMelbourne, Australia50 contributionsGreat place with some room for improvementThe pools and slides were fantastic, but a couple of things could make things even better. There could be a bit more shade over pools- eg there is none above the large cold pool, and little above the kids pool. Sone pools have only incidental shade and no shade sails, which I think is good in summer (and the areas under were often crowded). I thought there would be some lanes for swimming- instead the whole later pool is for playing. There are various bits of quite sharp paving and carpet on the slide stair, which are hard to walk on after a while. Sometimes there was no attendant visible on one slide, we got on the raft wrong and came off during the ride as is wasn’t clear exactly how to get on (Super Bowl). The showers were odd- just a bit too hot to be comfortable, with no way of adjusting temp. They run for about 2 mins without being able to stop, just short of time for a full shower, so needed to start again. Then you can’t stop it to put a towel on, and need to just walk out naked and wet to get out of the shower, or stand there til the shower finishes itself. Just having a shorter time, like usual, would be better, and the temp needs to be properly controlled. They did have shampoo and conditioner provided, which was nice, but a fully functioning shower would be better.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 January 2023

They were in superb condition and gave us so many options with thecrange of pools, was awesome! Whilst it rained a little, certainly did not stop us on the slides, or in the pools either. Wasnt too busy when we went, so easy go find a spot to leave our bags by the pools. Loved the togs drier, but when busy there needs to be more than one. Clean facilities.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 April 2023

Warning tourists with children. The place and the pools are lovely. Most of the staff are really nice, except for an employee named Marles who doesn't like children. She followed our son to most of the pools he went into, scared him and called him stupid because he didn't understand English. We had to leave the pools earlier than planned even though we had a long drive just to get to the complex and paid full price for the stay. Because he was afraid of her and it was hard for him to sleep at night when he remembered how she looked at him. She does not like children and should be kept away from🙏

Lovely pools, friendly staff. Was a bit slow at the tills to pay for entry but not too bad. There was on 2 hydroslides open as they were renovating the other, it wasn’t too busy so we didn’t have to wait in line. Family bathroom could use an update but definitely had an enjoyable time. Looking forward to seeing the new slides next time.

Pros:
- Lots of pools with different temperatures to move between so easy to spend long hours here
- Awesome ambiance and vibes, everyone seems to be having a good time
- Friendly and awesome staff at the Spa
- Relaxing and enjoyable experience
- The amenities you get for using The Spa are well worth the cost, it is much better value to have a private pool or massage package then pay just for entry
- Pools feel very clean
Cons:
- Rip off entry price gouging by making everyone pay for hydro slides now
- Also rip off pricing by having some pools and hydro slides closed while changing the same entry fee
- When it’s raining or cold all of the pools except for the hexagonal ones are not very enjoyable temperature
- Long queues on weekends to get in with only 2/3 slow tills which can be painful as large groups of stag do’s and students pay individually to get in
- Rude isite/camera staff
- Changing rooms feel dated and small and are hard to find room in during the weekend

Hi Kate!
Thank you for the feedback. We are thrilled you enjoyed out various amenities and that you took advantage of our private pools/steam and saunas.
We do not actually charge anything for slides usage as it is included with all entry tickets. We do apologise that our entrance can get busy during peak times. Much like many popular tourist spots, we appreciate the popularity and can only do what we can to ensure queuing is kept to a minimum.

I'm not really sure why they charge a ridiculous amount with the hydroslide included even though half of them are closed at the moment.
The older lady at the information kiosk was probably the single rudest person I've ever met, she advised us that they don't do discounted entry in a condescending tone and then followed it up with the discount is only after our spa treatment or AA membership.. of which we have both.
She also decided to do demeaning maths for us, so she really should be at Harvard

It's an 1 1/2 hrs drive from Christchurch but so worth it if you like hot pools. Next time I would stay overnight. Plenty of choice of different Temperatures. Good set up with clean changing rooms, good drinking water, Cafe on site.

Out of all the hotspring in NZ, I my opinion, this is the best in terms of cleanliness, safety, size and price.
Location: The hotspring is located in Hanmer Spring, about 1.2 - 2 hour from Christchurch.
There is no site parking but plenty of free off Street parking.
Facilities: Sulfur Pool, Haxagon Pool (for family), Adult Pools, River Pools, Two Slides, Lazy River and private Pools. There is a cafe serving pizza and snack. Male and female toilet with shower facilities. Family change room. There are also paid lockers.
Towels and swimsuit can be rented.
Lots of lifeguard around.
People do take your towel so make sure you use locker.

Very enjoyable, especially for Europeans unused to natural hot springs. Excellent facilities, though unfortunately two of the slides are closed for maintenance. Not too expensive, though lockers and towels are charged.

I’m a bit confused. Are the Thermal pools included in the overall price or or not? I see pricing for private thermal pools but are they all private?

Do we need to book? We're planning a visit the day after Kaikoura whale watching, but we may have to be flexible if whale watching is rescheduled. It's for the end of July.

Hi there, I have dry itchy skin. Are hot pools good or bad for this condition?
Marketing_HSTPS
Hanmer Springs, New Zealand2 contributions
Hi there.
It really does depend on your skin condition. Our pools are all heated with Thermal water however some do have chlorine except for the Sulphur pools that are pure natural mineral water. The Sulphur pools also have Silica.
Silica is an essential element involved in rebuilding and maintaining these tissues. ....Google this as you will find it has rewarding elements. If you are worried please consult your doctor.
