Another very nice visit to this beautiful region of the Luberon. A charming little museum, well preserved and easy to access. We recommend the guided tour which lasts one hour, this is done with exciting and passionate guides. The visit then ends with a small painting workshop ideal for children.

Beautiful cultural reconversion for this former industrial site based on the transformation of ocher. Guided tour recommended with a short introduction to drawing with ochres.
. To do if you are in the region and to complete with a visit to the Bruoux mines.

Really enjoyable visit today. Charming, helpful staff and fascinating to understand the process of producing ochre. Lovely setting to walk around. Beautiful location outside the main town.

We enjoyed this place but you have to have an imagination and be able to interpret the meager signage and what is in front of you. I was traveling with my DH, an engineer, and that helped a lot. If you exclude the shopping for books and art supplies, this place is all about saving and demonstrating the way that ochre was processed from the sand/dirt that was removed from the nearby hills. This plant has long been abandoned but it demonstrates techniques with a low-industrial component. The sand/dirt was brought to the facility, dumped, washed. The colorant separated from the sand and the slurry was gravity piped to settling ponds. Through evaporation the water departed and the colorant remained. It was cut out in large blocks, broken down to a powder and bagged. The entire process took nearly a year due to the evaporation required.

If you put some of this refined colorant material on your hand, it will stain and you want to head immediately to the washroom. In comparison, the unrefined, natural sand/dirt with the colorant will leave your hand just the slightest bit discolored. The difference is in the concentration of the colorant between the natural and refined state.

All utterly fascinating and we thought it was well worth our time.

If you are interested in the production of the ochres which make Roussillon so distinctive then come here. You will get a reasonable view of how a former ocre factory worked and a chance to buy paints and pigments, natural and artificial

Is making ochre interesting? Yes, moderately so. Is Roussillon where ochre colors are made? Not any more. That great artists got their color bases here is interesting, but this place is an informercial. We felt we did not get value for our time nor certainly our money.

After reading some of the reviews for the Conservatoire, I've come to the conclusion that a tour with a proper guide is the way to go here. I am happy to say, we had just that: A wonderful guide, Magali, who guided us through the gorgeous Ochre trail as well as an extremely informative tour through the wonderfully restored Mathieu Factory.
Magali took us through the different steps in the processing of the raw material to become pigments and all the uses for them. I would not have appreciated all there is to know of the trail, the Conservatoire or the Mathieu Factory if it had not been for such an excellent guide. I learned so much and Magali could not have been more informative or more pleasant. A wonderful experience. I should add you can reserve a guided visit in English, German, Italian, or Swedish

Ocres production was the lifeblood of Roussillon before the second world war. Today, the production is gone but the effort to preserve (conserve) the techniques and skills use to produce brilliant colors from ocres continue at the Conservatorie. The tour is well laid out and includes much information on our perception of colors as well as shows how colored pigments were produced from ocres sands in the past. The old mill is impressive in its preservation and a tribute to the ingenuity of those who developed ocres production techniques. I enjoyed the factory part and my wife enjoyed the color presentations. Go for the colors or for the engineering aspects of ocres production. The toilettes were very clean as well.

An interesting 1 1/2 hour tour round this former factory which made ochre pigment from the local sands. Good parking and toilets.

Guided tours make it more interesting. Without the tour there is not enough guidance to fill the time.

Tours are in French, don't know if they can cope in English.

Highly recommended for all ages. Call them to book a 1h30 training to make out of chalk water resin and ochre wonderful paints. In case you have not enough , ask Philippe to show you how to make from oak and iron sulfate the darkest ink ever. Adapted to all ages, this is a vibrant evocation of how colors were obtained from surrounding natural materials, mineral or vegetal . A visit in the place enriched our understanding of the history of this valley greatly and was one of the highlight of our stay in Luberon!!!
