Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hone knows the area like the back of his hand and has some wonderfully trained horses that will look after you. Not a single dull moment when you’re wading through rivers, weaving through bushland or cantering off the beaten path.

Myself and my friend booked in with Hone and his wonderful family to do a two day overnight trek with Horsemtrails in December.

We went with no expectations but we’re absolutely blown away by how special the whole experience was.

The riding itself was in beautiful untouched scenery- the horses were really healthy and loved their job, very forward going if you would like a horse with a bit of character! They also have quieter horses if you are more of a novice rider. Myself and my friend are both very experienced riders (both have owned our own horses for years in the past and competed to a high level). Hone was able to cater to this too- we had lots of canters and went through the track at a good fun pace. It was such an adventure. The river crossing is a real highlight- something very different and fun.

The hut that we stayed in was really well kitted out. We got lunch and dinner provided the first day and breakfast and lunch. The second day. The food is simple but fresh and delicious.

Hone and all the staff at HorseM trails are very knowledgeable about the native plants and animals of New Zealand as well as the culture and food. We had traditional Māori bread made with potato water by Hone’s family. We were told all about the natural healing values of the plants in the native bush and even made tea with one of them!

The staff at HorseMtrails were warm, welcoming, thoughtful, knowledgeable and accommodating. They went above and beyond to make sure we had a spectacular adventure.

This was my last weekend in New Zealand after living here for a full year and it was honestly the highlight of my whole year. If you love the outdoors, nature, culture, horses and good people, this one is most definitely for you!

If you're looking for a horse trek in NZ this is a must do!

Hone and Wai were the best hosts we could have ever asked for and we will most certainly be back. For this review we did the 6hour hike.

To start our day Hone introduced us to our beautiful horses who were all exceptionally gentle and calm (we were one intermediate and two beginner riders). We started trekking and Hone explained the incredible terrain we would be covering, steep hills, forest and a running river.

Our horses were sure-footed and relaxed for the ride, we we're well looked after!

We stopped of for a delicious handmade lunch from Wai whilst overlooking a running waterfall. It was truly breath taking.

For the entire day we scaled hills, navigated through trees and waded through a river. This day was an adventure and not a run of the mill ride.

This was by far a day to remember.

My partner and I did the overnight High Plains trek with Hone in April 2019. We had high expectations based on the glowing tripadvisor reviews and it was even more amazing than we could have imagined! Hone is an amazing guide, friendly and funny – super down to earth. I couldn’t believe how authentic this experience was – nothing like anything we had ever done before in New Zealand - a true kiwi experience. We travelled up to a hunter’s hut in the Tongariro park through beautiful scenery. We went offroad, navigating our horses through the forest and even managed a river crossing. It was an absolute blast and the very small group (my partner, myself and Hone) made it even more special. Thanks to Wai for making us a mean feed when we got back from the trek! Ka Rawe! We will be definitely doing another trip!

I joined Hone and Wai on a 2 day horse trek and I cannot begin to express what a great experience that it was. The utmost for me was that I got to experience Tongariro with natives of the land - Hone knows this beautiful place like the back of his hand. My ride on Memphis was exactly what I was seeking as someone who has been away from horseback for a number of years. Hone could have offered both more or less challenging rides but this was perfect for me. J

I did one of the longer day treks and it was by far the best horse riding experience I've had in years. We had a group of brand new people (never ridden a horse before) to experience riders, and we all really enjoyed it. We got off the beaten path, saw amazing parts of the forest, and had a blast. I can't say enough about how helpful and nice our guide was. The horses were in excellent condition and it was a great experience.

Full on horse trek with a great variety of terrain and excitement.

Never been on a horse before. Can’t wait to go again!

Full value for your money and probably one of the best things you can do in New Zealand.

My family and I had an incredible day riding with Hone through the rugged terrain of the kiwi reserve behind Owhango. 20 something years ago I was myself a horse trekking guide in the area, and yet I had cannot ever remember seeing New Zealand bush this beautiful and untouched. Hone and Waitangi clearly love their ponies and treat them well. All of them had both spirit and soft mouths, a rare thing in trekking ponies.
