Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (winter) and absolutely loved everything about it. As a very occasional hiker I first had doubts on my capacities to complete the walk, but Sarah totally reassured me by email and indeed it’s totally doable even for first timers on ice and snow. Our two guides Laura and Rick were very professional. Mind blowing landscapes await you during this unforgettable day. Go for it!

My friend and I had an awesome day conquering the Tongariro Crossing with our fantastic guide Rick. Can't speak highly enough about him. So awesome. Always there to keep us safe as well as tell us about the history of the landscape and mountains and great general conversation. An experience I will never forget

We had and incredible time on the Tongariro Crossing with our guides Jah, Keenan, and Sam yesterday. They were all very professional and super encouraging throughout the trek. I especially loved how Jah continuously reminded us to remember to make it our own journey, allowing us to lag behind and take photos or rest when needed and giving us some tips on more easily navigating the stairs on the way down (ACL replacement last year still causes me some knee aggravation). We ended the day exhausted but elated for accomplishing the winter crossing. Thanks to the AO team, we have tons of great photos to show for it. Thanks so much guys, it was AMAZING!!

We did the Alpine crossing in August. It was an unforgettable experience.
Ron was the perfect guide.
We were a very small group and although we had quite cold and windy weather the experwas amazin. Ron assisted us with the fitting of the gear and provided useful and interesting information during the crossing.
The organization was perfect: the pick up, the driving, the service...
We strongly recommend this excursion.
It was the highlight of our NZ trip.

We did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Aug, and while I was apprehensive about the crossing in winter (having done it before in snowy conditions in spring), I felt like I was in safe hands!
The guides - Rick and Jar were highly experienced - navigating the terrains and managing the different comfort level of the group. They are always there at scarier/ difficult turns and ensured that the equipments provided are safely attached to everyone in the group.
I’m so glad to have done this with Adventures Outdoors and it is definitely the highlight of my time here at Tongariro.

WOW - we had such a fantastic day, there were 14 of us in our group and it took around 8-9 hours for all our group to finish. It is a tough day, my boyfriend and I are both 23, reasonably fit and have done a few hikes but this was hard work at times. Our guides Jar and Rick were really encouraging and helpful - full of information and fun but also very good at explaining the more serious bits (ice axes and crampons - we hadn’t used these before!). The scenery is absolutely breath taking. All I would say is for people to keep in mind this is not a nice relaxed day walk, it’s a hike/climb and you need to be well prepared and it requires full concentration at times. If you’re planning to go in the winter definitely do your research, we could not have completed this on our own as we didn’t have the right equipment or experience.
Thanks Sarah and team for an unforgettable day!

Had to chase for a decision on whether we were going the next day & no contact after despite being unable to complete hike.
The guide Jar was excellent, we felt like we were in safe hands & he exlpained lots about the surroundings which was really interesting.
Just really disappointed that we couldn't complete the crossing (weather came in quickly) & we didn't get very far. It was going to be a highlight of our trip, as neitherof us had undertaken any crampon hiking, turned out to be our most expensive activity so far, for 4 hours walking (there & back to start) 😪 without using any Alpine equipment.

Totally recommend Adventure Outdoors for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - a highly professional outfit with excellent communication in the lead-up. Our guides were Jar and Rick who were just amazing at on all counts - we felt totally supported throughout and very reassured that if anything did go wrong we were with truly seasoned and highly capable alpine guides who know their stuff. There was constant consideration of the changing conditions we experienced across the walk and the different fitness levels in the group on the day we did it. In addition, knowledgeable commentary covering the geological and cultural aspects of the landscape. Kudos to Sarah Cate and her team!

Is it worth doing the to tongariro crossing in the winter even if you can't do the full walk due to avalanch risk?

KiaOra, Depends on the conditions and the weather. If the weather is good then YES Its still so beautiful up there. We spend the day going up through the Mangatepopo Valley and up onto the South Crater / Modor. The views are stunning, We spend time doing ice axe & crampon training and our guides may even get you building snow caves if the conditions are right.
Its best just to call us direct the day before for a track and weather conditions update then we can let you know our plan and you decide if you think its worth it or not.
We have had some amazing days up there on the days we do not complete the full track.
Hope this helps !
