Our full day of a weekend trip to The Chateau was windy with low cloud over the mountain. On the moring we were leaving it was a beautiful clear sunny day and when we rang to see if we could do the Volcanic Explorer Trip before we headed home we were lucky enough for a pilot to be available. Anthony took just the 2 of us up and treated us to a perfect flight with knowledegable commentary pointing out all the points of interest. To see the tops of these mountains that we would normally just pass from a distance was awesome and well worth the cost. Thank you so much Mountain Air.

During March 20202, I was touring central north island in New Zealand. We planned to do the Tongariro Alpine day crossing but it got cancelled for a few days due to inclement weather. Finally after a few days, I was again transiting through Taupo and wanted to see the remarkable Tongariror and other volcanic mountains from the sky. I was in touch with Mountain Air for a few days as they need a minimum number of passengers for each flight. Anthony (who also happened to be our Pilot) was very responsive on the phone and patiently catered to all queries.
Finally on the day of flight, I drove from taupo and got a bit late. Anthony was still waiting for me and what a remarkable 30 minute flight it was. I got the co-pilot seat and that was a bonus. Flew over Lake Taupo, Mt. Tongariro, Ngarhoe, Ruapehu. Also got excellent views of Blue Lakes, Emerald lakes and crater lakes. The day was clear and one can see coast to coast upto Mt. taranaki. they have quite a few flight options (both from Taupo and their airport in Tongariror National Park). Suggest to go for the 30 minute flight if budget permit as that way you get to see the beauty much longer and cover more spots. Many thanks to Anthony again. was a great experience.

We did the 15 min tour with a sunny day, and it 100% worthed it ! The weather was not supposed to be good but the company is honest ´cause you can book the tour, but you only pay just about one hour before going on the plane, and if it s too cloudy for you at that moment, you can decline.
Fortunately, it was not that cloudy for us and the flight was great ! The plan take off from a grassy runway and then fly toward the Tongariro. I did not expect that we would be so close to the volcanos, the view was great and the plane is going slowly enough that you can enjoy the view from all around. It starts from the north part of the trail, then turn on the east part, heading south, before crossing between Mount Doom and Ruapehu. The altitude was below the summit of Mount Doom. I was on the top of this volcano 9 years ago, and the view from the plane is pretty much the same !
The pilot was very nice and gave us information all along the tour and reach the perfect altitude and speed to enjoy the experience. They gave you plane sickness bag if needed. The windows from the plane were clean and we were able to take good pictures.
We did not check the time, but we had the feeling that from take off to landing, it was slightly more than 15 min. Good then !
Compare to France, the price for 15 min is quite the same, but the view is way different.

My family and I did the volcanic explorer scenic flights and wow what an amazing experience it was! Anthony was our pilot - he was very proffessional, and clearly knew his material back to front. My wife wasn't 100% comfortable with stepping into a small plane and found Anothony's conduct very reassuring.
The weather wasn't the best, with Mt Ruapehu obscured somewhat by cloud. Anthony was able to chart a path around Mt Tongariro and then complete the tour with a flight around the lakes and hydro-electrics. The plane was heated, so normal clothes for ground conditions will be enough. We were wearing trainers, jeans and long sleve t-shirts.
We were all totally blown away by the sights and would not have had the opportunity w/o the expert guidance of Anthony and the Mountain Air facility.

Thank you for this wonderful reivew, being able to provide flights when the weather isn't 100% for all 3 volcanoes can be tricky, we have some diverse and beautiful scenery, and we love being able to show off the lakes to the north, they have a unique and wonderful views. Was pleased to have taken this flight. Was originally scheduled for the morning and reprogrammed to the afternoon due to weather conditions. Great pilot, experienced and an excellent guide who explained sights and background throughout the flight. I felt safe in the air.

We found this trip absolutely amazing, it has to be up there with one of the best trips of our lives. We could have been charged double and we would still have thought it to be great value.
Pilot was a good down to earth guy, who was incredibly knowledgeable .
He even remembered all of our names ( 4 on trip).
Trip was for approx. 50mins.

We were very fortunate to have a beautiful clear day for this awesome experience. Our pilot Anthony was very professional and knowledgeable about the area. The view from the plane were absolutely stunning. A once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget. Highly recommend.

Had a perfect day among the mountains. Weather superb and flight was the highlight of my stay at National Park. Anthony went out of his way to make the trip possible, even collecting me (in a moon boot!) from hotel. Commentary was excellent, as were the manoeuvres through clouds to give us the smoothest ride and best views possible. Thanks a million, Anthony.

A very spontaneous decision on a perfect sunny day. Fantastic views over the entire Tongariro National Park to Mount Taranaki and Lake Taupo. Great Pilot as well. Lock down requirements for level 2 were all in place and we felt very well looked after and secure. Highly recommended too anybody in the area who has not done it yet. But hurry up booking. Unfortunately the business may close its doors soon at the National Park location. However they still will be available from Taupo.

Hi Jutta, Thank you very much for the review, we are indeed closing the Chateau airfield base and will be based from Taupo come At some point in the future.

Hi, We have no set minimum age, as long as your child or infant, doesn't have a cold or blocked ears, they will be able to take the flight fine.
we find that most infants, end up failing asleep, with the rocking of the wings, and the hum of the engine.

Is it easy to reach the airport from the city (I don't have a car)? And do you get a good look at 'Mt Doom' with the 15 minute flight?

Hi Melissa,
Good question, the chateau airfield is located 1 hour south of taupo, and we can be found on google and apple maps now by searching Mountain Air.
The 15min flight goes past the base of 'Mt Doom' as we head back to the airfield, if you want a good look in at the top, recommend taking the 25min flight.

Hi, We are on a budget and having walked the Tongariro Crossing recently we'd like to see it from the air. Budget dictates the 15 min flight but has anyone done this? All reviews seem to be for the 35 min flight - do I need to break the bank to extend the time to either the 25 min or 35 min? Any guidance appreciated, thanks
