About
Active Outdoor Adventures provides a shuttle service to the famous Tongariro Crossing which is considered one of the best one day hikes in New Zealand. 19.4 kilometers or 6-8 hours of pure drama and beauty. Walking over a volcanic landscape & passing colored lakes, springs and steaming vents with outstanding views is what attracts thousands of visitors to the Tongariro National Park on a daily basis during summer. Not only do we transport, we emphasize how important the area is to us as Maori with a bit of cultural history & stories when you depart our shuttle all from genuine local drivers.

So they where meant to pick me up at 7 am. Didn’t show up. Tried calling them a billion times without any luck. Got an email (luckily I had data!) 7:24 saying they had cancel the trip because of bad weather. Ended up taking another shuttle and doing the hiking in perfect weather conditions!! Worst experience I’ve every had with a company. Oh, and the secured carpark, where they said we would get pick up and where the car would be safe doing the day, was under construction, guess they forgot to mention that. So I had to park my campervan on the side of the highway, with huge trucks constantly coming by with 100 km/h! Such an unprofessional experience!!

Easy to organise, good driver, easy to contact. Despite seemingly clear instructions on where the car park would be, we (us and 3 other vehicles) ended up in the wrong spot. Cell service is a bit spotty, so it was a challenge to get a call to go through. Once it did, I got instructions for the real car park, where we were picked up without further incident.

Instructions for pickup point were bad, the carpark was locked, we werent sure if we should wait at shuttle carpark or go to Katetahi carpark. Ive emailed the day before, there was no reply. I also tried to call on the day, nobody was picking up the call, and nobody called us back after i left the message. We were picked up by someone from another company in the end. There were quite a few people confused by instructions from other companies as well, we were told that season officially starts in a few days, so perhaps things would work normally then.

We want to urge fellow travelers to avoid ”Active Outdoor Adventures” shuttle service to Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand. We have, prior to leaving this review, both studied the policy provided and given the company a chance to make things right – their responses have reinforced our perception that this is not a serious company that should be avoided.
For those who have the energy, we have provided a long description of events below. For the rest, a summary would be this: we had no choice but to pay double the price and were rushed off earlier than scheduled departure, after being threatened that the shuttle would not run at all (leaving us with no other option).
Long Description:
*We booked the shuttle service for 2 pax 5 months in advance.
*The day of the hike (at 6am) the company informed us via text the shuttle was cancelled.
*Upon calling them, the company rep. said they had decided not to run the shuttle given a last minute cancellation of another group that morning, making the shuttle not financially viable for them. Upon our complaint, the rep. coldly referred to their rights to do so according to their policy.
*As we had no other option, we asked how many pax minimally they require to run the shuttle – they answered 4. Hence, we paid for additional 2 seats at a higher price than our original booking.
*When arriving at the pickup place, we are first informed there will be no shuttle. *Then a driver shows up, but to our confusion there are 2 other travelers that are joining and the company rushed us to leave 30 min earlier than we booked, resulting in us having to carry the remnants of our breakfast for 8h on the hike.
*The other travelers had paid only NZD50 in total, whereas we had been forced to pay NZD168.35 for the exact same service.
*When studying the policy, it says the company shall give no refund at all if anyone cancels within 24h prior to departure (which the other group had done) – so not only did the company keep their payments but they also ripped us off by charging NZD168.35 for something that ought to have cost NZD50.
As said, we have been in contact with the company, and they have made it very clear they are not intending to right this wrong. We are very disappointed by the whole experience, and in addition to losing money, we also had a very chaotic start to a hike experience that we had been planning for a long time.
This company is not serious, takes advantage of customers, and consciously defends unfair treatment. Please avoid.

This was a great service! It was wonderful to see so many people getting out an active and seeing beautiful parts of new Zealand. These guys make planning this trip super easy. It was fantastic being able to walk back to our own car and not having to rush or worry about catching transport at the end of the day.
The car park is an easy stroll down the road from the end of the track.
We caught the 8-8.30am time slot shuttle. This means the shuttle is leaving the carpark at 8am (so get there around 7.45), and you will be at the strat of the track by 8.30am easy.

We had a large group use the shuttle service. James our driver provided friendly door to door service from and to our accommodation. I enjoyed the brief historical information he provided and it was nice to start our walk off with a karakia. The cold beer at the end of the walk was particularly enjoyable!!! I would highly recommend this company. Thanks

My experience with them was amazing!
You can see that active outdoor adventures wasn’t created based on money, you can see and feel they want to take care and give you the best experience because that’s what they enjoy doing!
James and Rongo have a beautiful energy, really passionate about their jobs. They have a good knowledge about the area which not only made the trip fun but also interesting and informative.
It was amazing to go snowboarding, but having them as our tour guides made the experience unforgettable.
I recommend it 100%

Shuttle did not show up in the morning so I did not get to do the hike. There was no communication. Would not be able to recommend. Go with a bigger operation.

We understand there was break down in communication and did offer a full refund or a later pick up along with our sincere apology. That's about all we could do at the time. We can't fix the past but we do our best rectify any issues.
