About
Active Outdoor Adventures provides a shuttle service to the famous Tongariro Crossing which is considered one of the best one day hikes in New Zealand. 19.4 kilometers or 6-8 hours of pure drama and beauty. Walking over a volcanic landscape & passing colored lakes, springs and steaming vents with outstanding views is what attracts thousands of visitors to the Tongariro National Park on a daily basis during summer. Not only do we transport, we emphasize how important the area is to us as Maori with a bit of cultural history & stories when you depart our shuttle all from genuine local drivers.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

So they where meant to pick me up at 7 am. Didn’t show up. Tried calling them a billion times without any luck. Got an email (luckily I had data!) 7:24 saying they had cancel the trip because of bad weather. Ended up taking another shuttle and doing the hiking in perfect weather conditions!! Worst experience I’ve every had with a company. Oh, and the secured carpark, where they said we would get pick up and where the car would be safe doing the day, was under construction, guess they forgot to mention that. So I had to park my campervan on the side of the highway, with huge trucks constantly coming by with 100 km/h! Such an unprofessional experience!!

I had the pleasure to get a return trip with James. It was a smooth ride in general, but the best part was James offered complimentary cold beverages on the way back to the car park. It was beyond satisfying after the strenuous Tongariro crossing.
Thanks James!

We stayed at their parking place overnight and took the first shuttle. Very good organization! We arrived at the end of the hike earlier than we expected and called James, he picked us up 10 minutes later with a beer! Awesome! :)

Everything was very punctual and very friendly, in addition, we finished the hike earlier than planned and although we had booked the return for later, they took us back an hour early. Best of all, they are waiting for you in the van with a cold beer!

I chose Active Outdoor Adventures because of their 5 star reviews and they certainly didn’t disappoint. I spoke to them about what to put in the GPS to find them and they said to call if we had any trouble. Didn’t expect to have a last minute ‘chat’ with a very friendly police officer who pulled us over on our way to the meeting point. (Not like the usual traffic cops, he was nice, smiling and quick so we could get on our way). I called and said we would be a few minutes late and they were waiting for us when we got there. I very much appreciated that they had a secure place for our car. The driver gave us some minute things to remember when we were on the mountain.
The best part though, was that it is run by the Maori’s and I just felt that if we are in their country then we should do what we can to contribute for all that they have offered.

The guys from Active Outdoor Advetures were great. They picked me up promptly from the place I was staying and, as soon as I had finished the walk, took me back on my own, just stopping off to give me a free beer! They are a local Maori family firm. I really liked the explanation about Maori tradition and the short prayer for us for a safe crossing as we set out on our walk.
The weather was fantastic and I completed the walk in under 7 hours. (I’m 63). Be aware though that you need to be prepared; it was very windy on the ridge and slippy coming down the scree from the top.
Thank you for your great service on a memorable day!

The Tongariro alpine crossing is Just fabulous. A incredible landscape and you can not park the car more than 4 hours in the park. So we decided camping in the Active outdoor Adventures in the back yard of the company. They drop you in the park and pick up you on time with a beer or water. We really recommend the service.

We booked online a couple of days in advance & chose to camp overnight so we didn't have far to move for the first shuttle at 5:45am. The service was amazing & James & his family were so friendly & welcoming. The shuttle from the car park was only 30 mins to the start of the crossing & James gave us some info on the area & a Maori greeting to welcome us to the land before we set off. They added a 1pm pick up which we managed to make & we were given a cold beer for the short journey back as well as a departing Maori prayer by James's daughter which was lovely :) really amazing service that just made the whole process super easy. Don't hesitate booking with Active Outdoor Adventures!

Excellent shuttle service for the trans alpine hike. Easy online booking platform, pick up and drop of on time, nice safe driving and hand out of walking stick which really helped managing the descent from the peak.
