- AndyAquilaLyme Regis, United Kingdom653 contributionsVery well worth the effort to get there. These falls are quite spectacular, but a bit hidden away from the main thoroughfare. They are signposted (poorly) and the track leading down to them was closed at the end when we visited, although we did manage to get a good view after the 15-minute walk from the road. Nevertheless, the falls are well worth the effort. Clearly more rain makes for even more spectacular falls and so enjoy the weather.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024
- evenstar944New York City, New York303 contributionsOne of the Most Beautiful Waterfalls in New ZealandTo get here, it is about a 30 minute drive from the main Waitomo Caves village. There is a parking lot off Te Anga Road and from here you will take a short 20 minute roundtrip easy walk through a forest to view a gorgeous waterfall. Well worth it if you have some extra time in Waitomo. About a 5-10 minute drive from here is the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, which is also not to be missed.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024

We went here on a rainy cold day but it was worth it. You are under cover for pretty much all of the short walk (less than 20 mins in and out) so you don’t really notice the rain. It wasn’t too muddy but I wouldn’t wear any shoes you are hoping to keep sparkling clean, it is a forest track there is some mud. The drive from Waitomo is about 25 minutes or so, but you can check out Mangapohue Natural Bridge which is close by to make the drive worth while.

Must do if you're in the Waitomo area. 35 minute drive from Waitomo village; 5 minutes from Mangapohue limestone bridge. Park just off the road on the left, and walk about 10 minutes downhill to the viewing platform. You hear the waterfall before you see it - it's like an incredible Jurassic world movie scene. Sun was perfect for rainbows when we stopped by! Take a pic, take a slowmo video. Photos don't do it justice - bigger and more magnificent in real life. Just gorgeous.

The falls are accessed from a small roadside car park and are a short walk along a prepared track. Not much fitness is required. A nicely maintained viewing platform provides a lovely view of the falls

Worth the quite short drive from Waitomo, we think ... we were impressed by the falls after good rains and enjoyed the short walk through NZ bush. A few well-placed benches allow for contemplation of the simply gorgeous green.

Well worth the walk to reach it. The waterfall is quite impressive. But there was a barrier to prevent people from stepping right up to the viewing platform as the far edge of the platform had collapsed. So stay safe and stay behind the barrier. You can still get a very good view.

Amazing waterfall -rather windy road to drive to get there though from waitomo village. Only a short walk from the road. The end of the viewing platform has been washed out from slip and cordoned off and due to slip you can’t currently walk down to bottom of slope. Not sure how long it will take for this to be fixed. Overall a very impressive waterfall. If you have headed out to this waterfall make sure to also see Piri Cave and the Natural bridge which are also short walks slightly longer than this one though

Nice short walk down to the spectacular waterfall. It's all uphill back to the carpark from the waterfall, but takes no more than 15 minutes. No toilet facilities here. Check out the other nearby free short walks: Piripiri Cave, The Waitomo walkway, Opapaka Pa walkway and the Mangapohue Natural bridge.

Amazing waterfalls. One of the better ones I've seen in New Zealand.
Short 10 min return walk, track is good however the lookout has had a washout so the end of it is closed. But you are still able to see the waterfall well and take photos etc. Not sure how long it will take to fix. Otherwise don't miss this.

From the Waitomo Glowworm Caves it is 25-30 minutes taking into account it is a narrow and windy road. Also a main road for logging trucks and plenty of local and tourist traffic on the weekends so even though it is only 29km away in a 100k speed limit road other factors influence time to get there. Also an extra 5-10min mild bushwalk to get to the falls itself all around 1 hour to 1 hour 20 min round trip back to Waitomo village.

The sign says it will take 10 minutes to get to the viewing platform and there are not a lot of steps - more of a sloping path. I don't think pushing a wheelchair would be that easy, but taking it slowly was quite manageable for a person like me, who is older, and has issues with hips and knees.

What would be a recommended length of time to spend there to get the full experience?

Trust me, you will not be swimming at Marakopa Falls in August or September. Unless you are very hardy or swim in a wet suit, swimming is enjoyable only from December to April- there may be an occasional hot day outside of these months, but otherwise Marakopa Falls is just for looking- a fifteen to thirty minute break in jour journey
