An excellent half-day adventure and a unique way to see glow worms. Our guides, Dan and Mitch, were fantastic - knowledgeable, funny and good at putting anyone in the group who may be slightly nervous at ease. To do the Black Labyrinth, you don’t need to be able to swim but do somewhat need a sense of adventure (this activity generally doesn’t get the adrenaline going but you do need to be ok with narrow, cold, dark spaces!). Gear storage available and nice to be able to have a hot shower at the end! Great communication via Facebook messenger when booking for the busy Easter weekend - extra slots were put on to meet demand. Note that the tours are currently operating out of Waitomo Homestead (formerly The Big Apple) on SH3 due to the impacts of Covid-19. This is stated on the booking confirmation but can still be confusing, especially if you’ve been before, when you drive past the Legendary Blackwater Rafting Co base on the road to Waitomo Village!

good way to kill time, no black water rafting though, just walking and a 10min float on a tube in dead water... 5 stars

We came for a friends 21st and had a blast. Turtle and Cory were our guides and were so patient with everyone and made sure everyone got involved and enjoyed ourselves. I went in confident but with the Abyss tour you abseil 30m down vertically, at one point through a very narrow hole, then do a zip line in the pitch black, so I ended up having a lil meltdown. Once we were in the rafting I was all good! Water wasn’t really that cold which was nice, trekking through the tight tunnels was a bit of a breath holder for me but was a pretty cool experience. Turtle and Cory educated us on cave formations and glow worms too so I left knowing I’d learnt things too. If I had seen any of the cave wetas or spiders that my friend saw I guarantee I would have run the rest of the way. Eventually we got to see our photos and have a snack back at the homestead too before everyone departed ways. Would recommend to do it at least once in your lifetime! 4/5 just because personally I found it a bit scary 😂

I sort of feel bad that for my 40 odd years as a kiwi I never did this. Travelled all over the world experiencing what other countries had to offer when we had this magical experience on our doorstep! Don’t miss this. We did the 3 hour Labyrinth tour, and sitting here in Waitomo with a Chardonnay I’m stoked we did it. The guides were awesome, off beat kiwi lads that really know what they are doing, you feel safe the whole time. Ignore all the comments about needing to be able to swim, if you can float in a hotel pool your going to be okay. They put you in a wetsuit to keep you warm and it prevents you from sinking. Another giveaway that you’ll be fine is the gumboots- they would not have you in gumboots if swimming was important! Just relax, and get ready for glow worms, cathedral like caves, and being underground in nature’s paradise. My 15 year old was a bit unsure, he’s a happy chap now!
