- Marisa1 contributionThis Glowworm Cave is a gemI can highly recommend the Footwhistle Glowworm Cave Tour. Our guide Ross ( the Boss ) picked us up at the I Site in Waitomo. He's such a funny guy and was always joking around. We had a lot of laughs with him. In the cave he explained everything to us about glowworms, stalagnites etc. He gave us enough time to take photos and spoiled us with delicious Kawakawa tea after the tour. Thank you Ross for the lovely tour.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2022
- Mikayla G2 contributionsAbsolutely AmazingSo good! We were debating whether to do this one or one of the other mainstream cave tours. We were very happy with this one and don’t regret it at all. We don’t feel like we missed out on anything. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and seemed to really have a passion for the caves. He also was patient and good with the kids on our small 11-person tour. It was amazing to see the hard work the family has put into getting the cave accessible. There were stairs but it was all very safe. We were also able to take photos inside the cave and the guide was again, patient with us trying to take Insta-worthy pics :) We really felt like we learnt so much that we were even able to tell a few people information about the glow worms when we did the Ruakuri Bushwalk later that night. Thanks Ross!Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 December 2022
- Nathan C6 contributionsBest tour we had in NZ - it was amazing! This was one of the best tours we have had during our 3 week trip in NZ/Australia. The guide, Ross, was so kind and funny. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The glowworms were magical and we learned so much. We enjoyed the nice cup of Kawa tea they gave us at the end too. 100% recommend!Visited January 2023Written 5 January 2023
- Neill GNottingham, United Kingdom84 contributionsGlowworm magic!!This was a great experience, very personal (only 4 people on our tour) and made all the more pleasurable because of the knowledge and personality of our guide Kyle. He and his family have run the business for past 20 years specialising in small group visits (max 12 people). Standing in dark cave looking at glowworms was special. Thus trip involves walking down & up 100 steps and you need to wear a warm top. I loved being able to take as many photos as I wanted. The tea ceremony & chat afterwards gave you a chance to reflect. Great trip!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 February 2023

- Joe HOakland, California50 contributionsTerrific, intimate sunset tour a winner! My wife and I joined Kyle on his Footwhistle Cave Sunset Glow Work tour and it was terrific. With just one other couple along for the ride, it was a very nice, low key adventure that felt personalized, not at all the commercialized cattle car, even though the agenda was pretty well prescribed. It was really cool to feel like we had the cave to ourselves, and we got to see lots of the little creatures and some other fun things. The grand finale was pretty spectacular - but you'll have to take the tour to find out. Highly recommended.Visited February 2023Written 4 April 2023

We did the sunset tour. Guide was excellent! Enjoyed everything about the tour. Loved the caves and especially the glow worms coming out of the cave after dark.

I went with my 7 yr old. The trip was great, very personal, Ross was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. It was so much nicer to have a small group and get up close to everything. The hut and kawakawa tea were lovely and my son loved the moa bones.

The tour was very personal and Kyle explained a lot of interesting facts. He helped us see the glow worms in a different light and we were able to take great pictures. The kawakawa tea ceremony was an added value compared to other cavetours.

Excellent cave and glow worm experience.
The cave itself I found first rate, has stream, stalactites, soda straws, Moa remains, walkways, stairs, subtle lights and, of course, glow worms. Kyle is very knowledgeable and happy to explain everything.
This is an adventure, but not extreme with risks etc.

Kyle gave us a very personalized tour of the cave with fascinating historical background. He picked us up, dropped us off and served us tea at the end of the tour. He was very personable and enjoyable to be with. We loved every minute of it.

Ive read a lot of the reviews and several mention “falling backwards on your tube”.
Could someone please explain this fall, how high is it, is there stairs or a ladder for someone scared of falling?
Thank you.

It's about a 3 foot drop. You hold your tube behind you (under your butt) then fall backwards, so you land on the tube, on your butt (the water you land in is about 3 feet deep). If you don't want to do it, it's no big problem, they have a ladder you can climb down to get into the water at the lower level (one person in our group preferred to climb down the ladder). The wall/dam that you fall/jump/climb down from, is to build up a higher depth of water above it and back into the cave. Once you pass this point, it's a very short distance to the walk out.

If you suffer from claustrophobia, could you do this tour? I'm okay in caves, just not okay in tight spaces (like crawling under a house or in a tunnel on my belly).

Hi Clio
There are no crawls in the Tube It tour people find the most difficult part the entrance way which understandable as you transition from a large outdoor space to a small dark cavern. However, again there are no tight spaces that are you have to squeeze or crawl through.
Hope this helps.

Do you have to crawl in the caves? If you were claustrophobic, would this be an issue?

We will be a family of 4 adults vacationing in Rotorua this coming December 14 - 21. We want to experience the Tubing at Caveworld.
How early do I need to make reservations? Or can we just get tickets at the gate? Also, I am the only one in my family with
a back issue ( spine surgery in 2010 ) and want to know how far does one jump into the cave pool with the tube? and am I
jumping with my butt in the tube to land in the water? I really don't want to land on my back.
Otherwise, I can just take the walking tour of glow-worm cave.
Thanks,
Rowena

I would definitely book tickets in advance. It's a popular attraction. We didn't book in advance and were very lucky to get a space on the trip. I would contact the vendor about the jump. I remember jumping then having the tube tossed to me. Be careful with your back! Happy adventure to you!
Hello, we would love to do a walking cave tour as we have a 1 year old and are not keen to get into a boat or have to traverse through water in wetsuits. We are both fairly fit and would have the baby in a carrier (not in a stroller or carried in our arms). Is there an option to do this or do all the tours unsuitable to bring a toddler? Thank you.

The tour we took was water based-inner tubes, leaping from rocks into pools, etc. I'm sure if you check with the local vendors you might be able to find a tour that better suits your needs.
Are tickets required to get in or is it more of a come and go and get a guide if you would like?

Hi Riley
For any cave tours it is advisable to book in advance, at this time of the year one day in advance is usually fine, however in the summer season 3 - 4 days in advance is preferable to ensure that you get the departure time best suited to your holiday arrangements.

If you could pick only (1) Waitomo Cave activity which would be the most fun and give you the best experience with the glow worms. Tubing vs. rafting or walking tours etc...
Thank you!
