About
World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves have been guided since 1889 and occupy a high place in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. Stare in wonder at the thousands of illuminating glowworms above as you glide silently by boat through the glowworm grotto. Many of our current guides are descendants of the Maori chief who originally explored the cave and can share with you the remarkable history of the area. Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way.

Waitomo caves
It was wonderful to see the glow worms during the very short boat trip - almost surreal. It’s an outstanding international tourist spot. I was astonished that this rather expensive tour - the thankfully silent boat tour of the glow worms lasts about 7 minutes, before the 50 minutes in the caves - could be guided by someone who prattled on about how guiding was done in the distant past, and who relayed boring and jumbled personal anecdotes. Such a lost opportunity to learn about glow worms and the caves - of which he knew very little and much of that was inaccurate - such as only Australia and NZ had glow worms! A lost opportunity for NZ tourism and a sabotaging of a potentially wonderful experience. I can’t understand why the guide Glen - whom I’m sure is a very nice person - was not given a script. People are coming from all around the world and would expect a more professional and informative experience. Also it’s so tiresome for a guide to sneer about Aucklanders on the tour. When a guide is so prejudiced about people from their country’s own city how will they react to people from overseas? To remain competitive this needs more professionalism - from the ticket office, photographer and guide.

Magical Experience
Apr 2021
A magical experience deep underground, seeing some wonderful sights. Moi our host was fantastic and gave us an informative yet fun tour of these beautiful historic caves. There are some steep steps deep underground, so if you're not very mobile it may be tricky, especially getting into the boat at the end.

Glow worms and caves stunning
Mar 2021 • Family
Our 4 year old daughter loved the glow worm cave tour and boat ride. The tour was an hour but it moved quickly enough that she didn't get bored. Definitely safe for young children to do. Lots of steps but really safe.

55 years since last visit
I was last here as a kid with my parents.

This visit was absolutely fantastic. Guide Hiria was truly amazing. Showed a genuine interest in every individual person. Made us all feel really welcome. Thorough knowledge and a stunning singing voice in the cathedral cave. What a lovely lady.
Highly recommend taking the time to see all the gloworms on the boat trip.
Excellent.

Incredible experience

Climbing down into a cave isn't something that I thought I would ever do. I was slightly nervous but it was so worthwhile. The climb down, and the walk through the cave wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was very easy and enjoyable. Katie (our guide) was really supportive and made everyone at ease. It was incredibly fun. The best part for me was the group singing happy birthday to me, in the dark, while we're all floating under the glow worms. It was a surreal experience. Highly recommend.

Wonderful visit
Mar 2021
It was many, many years since I had visited this iconic glowworm cave. It was well worth the wait. We had a wonderful guide, Shoni, who could also sing beautifully in the 'cathedral' area of the caves. She was informative and lots of fun. The boat trip is magic and there are lots of other opportunities to get up and close to glowworms. The only downside is there are no photographs on this tour. You need something long sleeved to wear as chilly in the caves.

Exceeded expectations

NZ do this tour while there are no cruise ships etc. The guide was so knowledgeable March 1 at 1000. The glow worms were magical. What a special way to see them in a boat with only 5 tourists.

Took our kids 6 & 8 years old. They loved it, we learned so much. The guide Shawny was lovely, kept us all engaged and very receptive to our group. An elderly gentleman had bad knees, she helped him into the boat first making sure he did so safely. The tour was very informative and interesting. The ride was so peaceful. We ate at the cafe, a bit pricey but we were happy to spend the money there knowing it was 75% family owned. The gift shop has good variety. I regret not buying a few more things. Would definitely recommend it and would come back again.
