We (two adults) travelled from Wellington to Auckland by train breaking our trip at Otorohanga to visit Waitomo Caves. We booked and paid ($40) for this service - transfer from Otorohanga to Waitomo and return - the week before travel. The driver was waiting for us on the train station when we arrived, dropped us off at our Waitomo accommodation - Wednesday - and picked us up from the same spot on Friday having texted us the confirmed train departure time to ensure our on-time arrival at Otorohanga. Easy as!!

Benn picked us up from our accommodation at Juno Hall Backpackers at 8am and took us on a very scenic drive to Marakopa Falls. It’s a fair way out of town along a windy road about 40 mins drive. Benn didn’t rush us, he allowed us all the time we needed at the magnificent falls then at Piri Piri Cave and Natural Bridge. Wonderful morning, thank you Benn

Did a Princess ship tour to Waitomo Caves. A 3 hour bus ride each way but well worth it. Would have been easier from Tauranga but had booked a tour of Hobbiton and couldn’t do both. Caves are magnificent. Don’t miss if you are near.

Friendly tour guide that wasn't over the top with facts. Quick summary and nice description. The boat trip back was a nice finish.

Most of the tour was walking through a limestone cave that was not notably different from other caves. The guide explained how caves happen. We then descended to our boat. The trip through the cave was interesting and we saw several large groups of the glowing worms. The reflections on the water were especially pretty. The boat trip was not long. We drove from Auckland and probably would not go that far to see the cave again. Still, it is worth a look. Some struggles in our group with steps and boarding the boats.
