Waitomo Glowworm Caves Guided Tour

279 reviews
New Zealand's natural beauty goes far below the surface, as you'll discover on this guided tour of the Waitomo Caves. The underground cave complex is home to millions of glowworms and spectacular formations, like the Cathedral Cave. Your guide will tell you all about the natural forces at work in the cave, on a tour that's fun and informative for both adults and kids.

‘Ross the Boss’ was our awesome guide for the Footwhistle Glowworm Cave experience. His mix of passion, knowledge and humour made this one of the best local sites to visit in Waitomo. A private family run business that is truly about making this a perfect, intimate experience. The visit is topped off with kawakawa education and tea. The caves themselves are a real delight and the family’s understanding and work towards the ecology of them is a credit to them. Highly recommended.

Amazing to walk in the cave and seeing all the glowworms when all the lights were off, there were so many. Felt like a private tour with just us and another family. The kawakawa tea was a nice relaxing way to round off the visit. Also enjoyed the banter with our guide Ross, who was very personable quick with the humour. Nice to support a local family business.

This was an absolute amazing experience. I booked this as a surprise for my husband. The guide Ross was very knowledgeable and friendly. There was only 4 of us in the tour so it felt like our own private tour. I personally enjoyed the Kawakawa tea and have ordered some products. We loved supporting a family business. Worth every cent, recommend 100% to everyone.

This was a fabulous tour from start to finish. We were kindly picked up (and dropped back) from the Top 10 camp which was really appreciated as we were traveling by motor home. Our guide was Ross who was a charming genuine chap both very knowledgeable and entertaining. Short walk to the cave which was like a secret piece of paradise. Stunning inside with an amazing number of glow worms and history which was all very well explained in a non rushed environment. Loved how we were encouraged to stop and take photos and enjoy the experience fully. We were impressed with how safe everything felt and the efforts of this family to encourage an environment where the Glowworms could flourish - a great effort in promoting Eco-tourism. Also enjoyed the wind down after in the nature hut with the Kawakawa tea. Forget the mass packed competitor tours and go with this one as you will definitely not regret it .

A fantastic tour led by Ross, the father of the man who owns the cave property. Situated in a beautiful NZ fern forest, the tour starts with an easy 5 min walk down a few flights of steps. What sets this tour apart from the other cave tours is the small group size. Instead of jostling around a commercialized cave with hundreds of people, there’s only a small group of no more than 12. The cave itself was breathtaking, and it was interesting to learn about how their actions are increasing the number of glowworms in the area. Once back above ground, the tour continues with a tasting of kawakawa tea, which is made from the leaves of a NZ plant and carries medicinal benefits.
