My husband and I arrived at the Lake Hawea trek. I was teamed with Whiskey. He had an incompletely healed wire tear injury to his hock. Angela and John were not concerned about it at all, but I certainly was. He was not lame but I was worried he could bang or twist the injury during the trek therefore hurting himself further, which was not a situation I was happy to be placed into.
In their words they chose Whiskey over several other horses as he needed to be out of the paddock and moving to assist his continued recovery.
He also had to be ridden at the back as he felt the need to defend himself when other horses got too close, laying his ears back and kicking out.
I requested another horse to ride. Their suggested solution was to swap another rider onto him and I have their horse.
We were not willing to do that to another rider or Whiskey as for us this solution wasn't going to allay our concerns about his injury. So we withdrew from the trek completely. We have both owned our own horses for over 50 years, and trekked thousands of Km's both privately and with commercial companies. This is the first time we have ever pulled out of a trek.
They used Whiskey on the trek anyway as a young lady was taken off the horse Wishbone for what I understand was a wither rub.
As we had accepted their very extensive terms and condition on booking, and because we chose to leave, plus refused their offer of a solution we were not legally entitled to a refund. ($7,500 in total). For us our holiday was ruined.

Just back from am incredible few days trekking in the Ahuriri Valley, with Angie, John and team.

There were 13 people in the group which included two guides, a solo rider, a group of eight, myself and my 10 yr old daughter. A fabulous bunch of people, and many were repeat riders back for another trek. All had previous riding experience, varying from intermediate to advanced. However the western saddles provided great stability so I’d imagine beginner riders would feel very safe. The horses were extremely sound to the changing environment and their experience and calm temperaments showed through as they navigated some extreme terrain and weather conditions at various times of the journey.
The horse team were in excellent condition especially considering this was their last trek of the season, which is a testament to the, breeding, welfare and loving care they receive year round.
Having the transportation shuttle included was a fantastic service, which made logistics super simple.
Nice accommodation surrounded by stunning scenery. It was lovely to be able to watch the horses Roll, gallop off and graze their massive evening paddocks at the foot of the mountain after a long day.
The food and hospitality was superb, we were extremely well fed and looked after. Can’t thank Adventure Horse trekking enough… we have many wonderful memories and hundreds of photos to treasure.

This was INCREDIBLE, made our time in NZ super special and memorable, I will remember this forever! We did the 6 day Lake Hawea trek which was just amazing, each day the trek was different taking in different scenery as we made our way round Lake Hawea which was just breathtaking. We had delicious, warm, hearty meals every evening made by the wonderful Angie and John our guide was great fun making us laugh lots..! It was mostly walking with a bit of trotting and I felt very comfortable on my horse who seemed very steady and though there were a few steep up and downs I trusted him completely. I also celebrated my 23rd birthday whilst on the trip and Angie made a delicious birthday meal and scrumptious birthday cake and decorated the place with balloons which was really lovely. We came across from the UK for this trek and was definitely worth it, I had the best time and would love to do another of their treks if I am ever back in NZ!

Such an amazing experience and so glad I done it! I rode Wishbone & Whiskey who were very gentle horses, the weather was great, scenery was something else. Angie & John were great hosts and care about their horses and they are very well looked after. I had such a great time meeting the rest of the trekkers and the stations we stayed at were warm/comfortable. I would recommend holidaying with this company as I will be back 🐴🥰

What an amazing ride, I can’t thank John and Angie enough for organising these incredible adventure rides. The photos don’t do the beautiful scenery justice it was just stunning and ever changing. These horses are purpose bred and in this ride you will be just blown away at how surefooted and safe they are. This was my third time riding with John and each ride has just been awesome, I am so grateful I have been able to come on these rides and can’t wait to do more. What a fantastic way to see NZ high country, on a wonderful horse, staying in authentic accomodation, eating fantastic food and enjoying a few laughs. If you are reading through these reviews and wondering about doing one of these rides then don’t hesitate I can highly recommend them, they have a high number of return riders which is a huge compliment in itself. Thanks so much Adventure Horse team!

Great Southern Hospitality from And & John. The high country rugged big country land scape seen from horseback is incredible. My perception of time becomes essentially reframed by the quiet and capable rhythm of my horses pace, my thoughts slow down, take in the scenery, and contemplate simplicity. Trust and connection is built with my horse as we navigate together the diverse features of the high country landscape, shingle slopes, glacial rivers, mountain tarns, tussock plains and the isolated shepherds hut tucked away out of the weather waiting to provide shelter and Kai at the end of my day of riding. unbeatable memories.

A real adventure for sure! Can’t thank Ell, John and Hannah enough for taking care of us on the very challenging Lakes2Mountains trip, and to Angie for keeping us all up to date with info leading up to our arrival. The scenery was breath taking, horses very well trained and confidence giving, even on the very narrow trails, excellent food and lots of laughs every night at dinner. The best way to see the more remote areas of NZ South Island. Can’t recommend this enough if you want a real adventure in a fabulous location with excellent hosts

I had the absolute time of my life on my January 2023 Lakes to Mountains trek!!! The scenery was to die for, just magnificent every day from Lake Hawea thru Wanaka and up the Ahuriri Valley.
John was a magnificent host, cooking up a storm each night and full of information and fun!!! Ell was the perfect talented and caring guide, matching us up perfectly, I think, with our kind, surefooted and responsive mounts – Hanna being the standout of the bunch of course – I loved her.
I intend to be back next year, with a friend, for more of your style of horseback adventure.

Absolutely loved the Lake Ohau Luxury Trail. The horses are wonderful. The scenery, food and accomodation are all outstanding. John, Ell and Hannah looked after us all so well. This was my second trek with them. Both times I was on my own but was treated like part of the family. I highly recommend Adventure horse trekking and I can’t wait til my next adventure with them.
