About
Backcountry Saddle Expeditions has celebrated a few milestones this year... They are 36 years old... with an outstanding 30 years under the current management of Debs Thompson. Debs is a "hands on" outdoor girl and wishes to share her family of "fur babies" with everyone. Henry the cat, Dixie the dog and her stunning herd of 20 Appaloosa horses. Appaloosa's are an American Indian horse who are best known for their stunning spotted coloration. They are a mountain breed and are suited to the beautiful mountain steeps of the Hidden Valley, Earnscleugh. To keep the western theme the horses are outfitted in Western Saddles which ensure the rider a safe, secure and more comfortable ride. Come and enjoy the family and meet Debs and her team.

    Horsing on the Hills!
It was an amazing time with the amazing Debbie as our guide. The trek was challenging even as beginners but we were still very capable. You get an ample amount of time, history and nature lessons along the way. Overall a 5/5 experience and would recommend to everyone.

    Outstanding Experience - Thoroughly Recommend
Due to my daughter's love of horses, we have done a few family horse treks on holidays. This was by far the best experience we have had. The trek was led by Debbie who is such a wonderfully relational person and exceptional guide. The Appaloosa horses are the most adorable horses, full of personality and energy. They are fit, healthy and strong. This trek caters to all levels of ability/experience - including those with lots of riding experience. The views were outstanding too! It was so much fun for the whole family. We don't usually leave reviews, but really want to promote this to others because it was excellent!

    Amazing scenery and beautiful horses
Debs was an amazing tour guide and made us both feel so comfortable considering we hadn’t ridden in over 10 years! The horses were beautifully behaved and the scenery was stunning. Would highly recommend if you’re in the area.

One of the Best experiences i ever had....and with zero horse knowledge..Debs is an amazing guide and host.....The horses are calm and very well cared for. We booked this tour to do something different than your everyday hike. At first my wife was a little nervous because she had never gone horseback riding before.

I mentioned this in the booking and Deb re-assured us it would be alright. Upon arrival and after receiving our helmets she led us to “Bitty”. She’s a super sweet & calm horse. My wife was going to ride her and got to pet her a bit beforehand. This already eased her nervousness quite a bit.

After everyone had geared up they helped us on the horses with a little step. Then Deb explained us how to direct the horse (left/right/stop). She took her time to explain it to everyone so everyone was at ease. This is definitely a must-do experience for any age.

The tour itself saw a lot of different landscapes & terrain. We got a lot of information about the fauna & flora we saw as well as the environment around us. Deb’s a great person who really knows how to guide & help people get familiar around horses.

Added bonus is that she took pictures and airdropped them to us all afterwards without any extra cost.

Thank you again for a wonderful experience Deb! I hope many more people can come and join your tours!

Deb was great fun, and the ride pitched just right for our ability level. I took my 2 daughters, 8 & 12 years and they had no trouble as beginners - trotting downhill was great fun!
Very pretty views too

A beautiful way to experience Alexandra. Amazing views from high up in the hills. We were three beginner riders who were able to canter by the end of this trek. Deb and her husband are welcoming, kind and informative. Learnt about the horses, landscape, fauna and the local wild life. Able to get a spot the day before and Deb has eftpos. Everything was a breeze. Loved the oil skin coats available. Couldn’t recommend this tour enough!

What an amazing ride! Being an experienced rider, I was looking for somewhere to ride that combined both beautiful scenery with a bit of faster paced action. Deb provided both of those for us and although we were in a mixed ability group (including a couple who had only ridden once before), she was great at letting the more experienced riders hold back for long canters on multiple occasions.

The Earnscleugh area was gorgeous to ride in and it felt like being in the Wild West at times, especially riding western style.

It was really interesting learning about the local flora and fauna from Deb who knows the area so well.

The appaloosa horses are a delight - well behaved but keen to have a good blast too!

I highly recommend this for any experience of rider.

Thank you Deb!
