This is not your ordinary review

I had the pleasure to meet a wonderful group of people from Maude Wines during Wanaka visit... but not at their vineyard!

It's May 4th (Star Wars fans alert) and I am traveling around South Island with my parents who are in their 70s. We stopped at Wanaka for an evening before driving up to the glaciers. We wanted Korean that night and after some research we went to Shinaburo Korean Restaurant. As we arrived the restaurant, there was already another group of about 20 people, in costumes (Star Wars mainly of course!), and we were the second group. We've ordered our food, and while we were enjoying the laughters coming from the other group, one of the guys there walked over and apologized for the excessive noise (we didn't mind at all), and gave us some distilled Pinot Noir. Apparently they were from Maude Wines and it was their end of season celebrations. We thanked him for his good gesture and whoa the Pinot was amazing. 20 mins later he came back and this time we were given Riesling!

At the end I went over to say thank you and shared a similar experience I had with them (except with soft drinks and cigarettes). Yes may be I am a little tipsy by the end of all the wines but this is truly an energetic, engaged, friendly and fun group. Oh yeah did I mention the cheer when I flashed my R2D2 Star Wars t-shirt and said "May the force be with you?". You just can't go wrong with giving these guys a visit because I am confident you will feel the same. I certainly plan to go give them a visit next time I am in Wanaka!

Great wines and a great tasting.

You can't beat raw enthusiasm which came over in our tasting with wine maker/owner Sarah-Kate Dineen. If you could bottle that sparkle you could make a fortune. Eight wines with the Reislings being very special. Not to detract from the Pinot Noirs which were top notch. Wonderful setting overlooking Lake Wanaka in the distance on a bright sunny day. Perfect.

More bar than winery
Feb 2020
Chose wines from a menu to taste: 4 for $10. The wines come out in bulbous test tubes on a paddle in the order chosen from the menu. No information about the wines so more just a bar experience rather than a serious wine tasting opportunity. Can purchase food (some GF options).

Inviting place for wine tasting
Oct 2019 • Couples
Maude Wines came highly recommended by our friends and it’s not hard to see why. We went on a Monday lunch time which meant it was very quiet and so we ended up having the place to ourselves! You pay $10 per person for tasting 4 wines of your choice and you can take your time tasting them while taking in the beautiful views. We had pork rillettes as a snack with our wines which went down a treat!

A tasting paddle with two white and two pinots was a great way to start this experience; top quality wines and purchased some to take to a family gathering in Dunedin- staff were efficient and veru helpful.

We went at 4pm during the week and this was early June, before ski season so it was quiet. Well worth the small price for the wine tasting. We learnt a lot about the area and we enjoyed the wines. We were even able to find a distributor in our state in the USA.
We wish we had known about the restaurant because if he had extra time we would have come back for dinner. Nice view as well.

Wine tasting evening was perfect
May 2019 • Friends
My friend and I have been travelling through New Zealand for just under 4 weeks when we stumbled on Maude vineyard. We got four tasting wines for 10 dollars, there is a choice of around 10 and you pick the four you like. We had a sparkling wine which we loved so much we ended up buying the bottle! The wine tasting was lovely and the setting was so beautiful. We got the salmon pate to share which was tasty and all the wines were so nice. We were served by Natasha and Emily who were so friendly and helpful and gave us information on the local area too. Definitely a perfect place to go with friends or a romantic afternoon (the wine tasting shuts at 5pm!) Prices were really good and well worth it!

Tasting
Mar 2019 • Couples
What a beautiful spot... just happened on this place as we were looking for the restaurant based at the same address...Gentil? The hostess was a lovely Irish girl who explained that we could each choose 4 wines from a long list to sample. $10 p.p. Which was recoverable if we bought a bottle. They came in little containers and she explained each one in detail. The Maude wines are great especially the Riesling and Pinot noir. Particularly good was the first in the list which was a champagne type and a mixture of Chardonnay and Pinot noir. I forget the name but it was delicious. A great way to spend an hour. Interestingly the owners of the vineyard were speaking later at the Wanaka agricultural show and saying that many of their wines were award winners in N Z. Not at all surprised.
