Well worth taking a half day out for this trip to Mou Waho Island. The boat ride is fun and walk to the lake and views exhilarating. Chris is an entertaining guide who shares a wealth of knowledge amongst the banter. A dedicated conservationist.

If you are anywhere near Wanaka, do this tour. A superb trip. You'll see great scenery, get some exercise, a learn a lot. Chris, the guide, is quite a character and very knowledgeable. You'll see the Buff Weka. Watch them ,they'll steal your cookie during "high tea". This will be a highlight of your New Zealand visit.

This boat tour and hike of this beautiful island is amazing. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the geography as well as the wildlife (We saw many buff wuka). The landscape was amazing seeing the lake on top of an island on a lake. We even planted a tree on the island.

Thanks for the great review, the Buff Weka are extinct on Mainland NZ and have been since 1920. This is the only location you will see this particular flightless species of Weka bird in any numbers on Mainland NZ. The Trees you plant are already feeding the birds, as on our trips so far, we have planted over 7000 food... More

James our guide took us on a cruise to Mou Waho to explore the island. He was enthusastic and passionate about the great conservation work being done and made the trip very interesting. If you go to Lake Wanaka you must do this trip !

James was born in Wanaka, and his pride and knowledge of this area is part of his DNA! We plant a tree on every trip to magical Mou Waho island. We love it too, as it is always different on every trip! The birdlife is abundant and blossoming due to our additional 7000+ food trees planted in the last 10... More

Wow! This is a must-do tour. If you travel to Wanaka and don't do this tour you have not truly experienced what Wanaka's beauty and nature have to offer. Our tour guide - Chris Riley - was ecstatic, highly knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife and the ecological area. He took us on a 16km boat trip out to Mou... More

Thank you for the nice review, we do try and answer all of the questions why NZ nature is so unique and different to thew rest of the world, no mammals - (other than 2 small Bats, that walked around on the forest floor), before Humans arrived 800 years ago. Just like a scientific experiment lasting 83 million years, NZ... More

We booked for two tours by this outfit, and were very happy with both. The half-day boat/island walk was great fun, lots of information about the native birds, plants, history. Of course the scenery is just flat-out stunning. We also did a full-day walk near Haast Pass, which was a great experience. The forest is untouched, and we didn't see... More

We had a wonderful cruise up Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island with our guide James of Eco Wanaka Adventures. The tour included an informative hike up to the highest point on Mou Waho Island. We saw many local birds, including the very rare weka birds. The Island is the best vantage point available to view and photograph the entirety... More

James is our top man, to lead you to the top view of the lakes from the top! Not a building in sight, this is a very hard view to replicate in the rest of the world. Photos can never do this justice until you actually experience it yourself! More

I highly recommend this tour, not only because of the reason I mentioned above, but the tour itself was incredible. Our guide, Chris Riley, is passionate about this island and everything concerning it. He is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and he accumulated a couple of artefacts you don't see on an everyday basis. I'm not going to tell you what it... More

Thanks for your review, true that these Wetas are ugly... Weta looosely translated is "The God of Ugly Things" in Maori. The Buff Weka is now only found on the Chathams and Mou Waho in any numbers. This particular Weka species is even more "ecologically naive' than the other species just hanging on on the mainland. This Buff Weka became... More

Doing the guided walk with Chris to Rob Roy Glacier yesterday in the most spectacular weather possible - is already etched in our memories as one of the best days we've ever had travelling - not enough positive superlatives to describe the amazing scenery; awesome sounds of glaciers moving; Chris's informative commentary or the sense of achievement - simply stunning!... Half day tour was well worth it. Little snippets about wildlife, birds, history and the local surroundings. There were just four of us and James our host. The boat only takes small groups so there's a real personal touch. Definitely worth booking, this tour respects the environment whilst also sharing how special the local landscape is.
