A group of seven of us from Australia recently took on the A2O cycle trail over four days on our own gravel bikes, and we couldn’t have been more impressed with the experience. The package was outstanding—communication was seamless, transfers were always punctual, bag transfers were effortless, and the accommodations were spot on. The organisation and logistics were flawless from start to finish.
Although we “missed” a few meals due to a minor cut-and-paste mistake on our part, the team went above and beyond by refunding us $100 for those meals—something they were under no obligation to do. It’s just another example of their exceptional service and professionalism.
We’re an experienced group of riders who’ve tackled big adventures, including crossing Australia and South America, and we all agree that this was one of the best “value-for-money” trips we’ve ever had.
And they even found they even managed to find and return my hydration pack I left on the trail. Amazing.

Our itinerary was well planned by Cycle Journeys. We rode A2O swift 5 nights and 6 days. Great to have our bags at our accommodation on arrival. Stayed at some lovely places overnight meeting the locals.
Lake Ohau lodge was a bit disappointing. Very tired. Needs to be renovated badly. Great position overlooking the lake, so it’s a shame the owners don’t spend money and time doing this.
Started off at Mt Cook with hard tail bikes. The first leg we rode from Mt Cook to Twizel had an extremely rough trail. One bike crank broke so another was delivered to us. Once we got to Twizel we exchanged the hard tail bikes to full suspension bikes. A bit more expensive but we would HIGHLY recommend using dual suspension bikes!! This made such a difference for us to enjoy the bike journey to Oamaru.
Our group of 4 are experienced mountain bike riders so appreciate good quality bikes. My partner had to service our bikes at Lake Oahu to stop creeks in the headsets. Luckly we had a bike maintenance man with us.
A fantastic riding experience. Many great memories to reflect on. New Zealand country side is simply stunning. We would definitely book another cycle holiday.

We used Cycle Journeys to facilitate a group of nine people riding the A2O. Firstly the A20 track, with its views and scenery, was fantastic. It was well sign posted, well maintained and the cycling was just great.
Cycle Journeys delivered very time. The bikes and gear they provided were excellent, the depot in Twizel was helpful when we needed some minor adjustments after the first day, our baggage moved seamlessly from location to location. I loved the variety in each night's accommodation. Each night was different, with plenty of great dinners along the way.
I would recommend this trip with Cycle Journeys to anyone who wants a safe, well organized adventure,,,

We just completed our A2O trip booked through Cycle Journeys. AMAZING. They organised the itinerary, transfers, bike hire, fabulous accommodation, some meals, bag transfers and side trips. From our initial booking made in May with the lovely Libby, to checkin/briefing with Paul & Shannon in Twizel, to the smiling faces at the finish in Oamaru, we had exceptional customer service from every staff member. Our self guided trip from Mt Cook to Oamaru was faultless, helped by a great briefing prior to the start and easy to follow notes and booklets for each section of the trail. We hired standard bikes and found them great, although for a little extra comfort would recommend a gel cover!! We could not fault a thing. Thanks so much for organising one of our favourite trips. Highly recommend Cycle Journeys.

From the first phone call I had with Libby to discuss cycling the A2O Trail, I knew we had made contact with an efficient team. She listened to my comments and concerns and came up with an itinerary suitable for a 70+ cyclist to ride and enjoy each day.
We chose the standard accommodation package, perfect for one night stop overs, our luggage was collected each day and transferred to our next nights accommodation so it was there waiting for us, when we arrived each day.
The itinerary was succinct, yet had all of the detail we required, along with separate instructions for locating our accommodation.
Bikes were clean, came with a pannier were in good condition.
I would highly recommend Cycle Journeys to anyone.

Cycle Journeys did a fantastic job of organising our Alps to Ocean trip. Our group of seven chose the superior accommodation package and loved all the accommodation and meals provided, especially Waitaki Braids in Kurow and The Old School in Enfield.
We rode the Alps to Ocean on standard bikes over six days, but we found the track rough in places, so would recommend using a suspension bike. Loved the variety of scenery throughout and would highly recommend Cycle Journeys.

Cycle Journeys was efficient and pleasant to deal with. The accommodation that was arranged for us on our A2O ride was beyond our expectation (especially The Barn at Lake Ohau), the self guided information provided was good and the shuttles were on time and comfortable. A great experience.

What a fabulous route. Shame about some of the service from Cycle Journeys. I'd look for a different operator.
Some of us were worried about range on our e-bikes so asked for an additional battery. Bruce, who was setting us up, said we can't have an additional battery and repeatedly said that no customers have ever run out of battery. The next day all eight of us ran out of battery despite riding on eco. If we'd had the extra battery we asked for, this day would have been fun instead of semi-hypothermic. I ran out of battery most days.
We went thru Cycle Journeys briefing on the importance of health and safety, hence why our bags could weigh only 15kg. Then a couple of us asked to swap brakes to the other side. Bruce said we weren't able to do this. We finally managed to negotiate the swap and avoid this important safety risk, but I've never rented bikes and had the provider refuse to set them up for us.
If you can, talk to people who have done the trip to improve the accommodation and route recommendations from Cycle Journeys to better suit your objectives. We especially enjoyed Mint Folk and Poppies in Twizel, Barn at Killin, & Kurow.

We hired from cycle journeys in Oamaru a one day hire including a drop off at Duntroon (54km back to Oamaru) and vouchers for morning coffee and lunch. The team could not have been more friendly and helpful, the bikes were great (including a spare tube for our puncture!) scenery fantastic and route well marked out. Totally recommend ❤️

Cycling the A2O was all sorted by Cycle Journeys - From the moment of our first phone call to with Libby of Cycle Journeys reservation team we knew we would book our cycling package to ride the A2O with them. We were able to discuss a suitable itinerary to meet our needs, 1 over 70yr old on an Ebike, 1 over 65 on a bicycle, neither wishing to cycle long distances each day.
Libby came up with a perfect itinerary which included shuttle from Christchurch airport to Tekapo, bike hire, accommodation and transfer of our luggage each day with optional extras. We had two choices of type of accommodation, we chose the standard which was more than adequate for one night stops.
Our A2O experience was awesome, from the moment that Geoff, our shuttle driver met us at Christchurch, until the end of the trail at Oamaru. The bikes were great, with the pannier provided, and our luggage was always waiting for us at our accommodation upon arrival.

Hi there.
Luggage movement from township to township along the trail is $15 per bag (15kgs max).
Full details on our luggage transfers and shuttle services on the A2O can be found on our website.
