About
Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy, is a marvel of opulence, innovation and political intrigue. Meticulously restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls. Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii’s royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

Iolani Palace
Jul 2021 • Family
I highly recommend this experience to build knowledge about Hawaii's beautiful history. The palace is gorgeous and the narrative was very interesting. The whole family loved it! Book ahead online and arrive 20 minutes before your assigned time. Park on the street.

Iolani Palace visit
Jul 2021
Every time I visit Iolani palace it is both informative and enjoyable. The insight into the unmitigated gall of the US Imperial/Colonial government is so embarrassing. I only hope that we can and do learn from this exhibit.

Great audio tour
Jul 2021
One of my favorite places to take Hawaii visitors. The audio tour is thoughtful, education and very interesting. It tells its story beautifully. You will feel the emotion of the place and the people who lived in the palace.

The audio tour of Iolani Palace was an interesting and enjoyable visit. The narrator speaks well, with a pleasant voice. The rooms are beautiful. The quilt is bittersweet.

the US's only palace

wonderful site and professional staff. They mimicked the prestige and honor that the residents held when this was an active site. World class act.

Beautiful but not worth the cost
Jul 2021 • Family
This palace was beautiful way too costly for the tour. There is not a whole lot to see inside or outside of the palace.

Beautiful and informative.

Took my family (2 adults and 3 kids) to an audio tour because the docent led tours were sold out. It was emotional for all of us as we heard the story of our kingdom from Kamehameha to Lili’uokalani. The music, the gowns, the stories of their success and the overthrow…so important to know. I was actually glad I ended up with audio so that I could rewind and go at my own speed. It was so beautiful to see and hear. Very thorough and almost every question I would have asked was included in the audio tour. Any questions I did have were answered by the people that were present.

Don't miss this place
Jul 2021 • Family
Don't miss this place if you want to understand how the royals have shaped Hawaii and its culture. It was very interesting to know that King Kalakaua was an early adopter of technology and installed electric lights and telephone soon after the were invented. The staff were very courteous and this place is totally covid-safe. The audio tour was very well done.

Beautiful architecture and great history
Jul 2021
I really enjoyed the tour. It has beautiful grounds we walked around before hand. The architecture and detail is amazing and the guide explained a lot of the history as well.
What I didn't realize is that there is a little museum in the basement area, with some of the royal jewels and more. Make sure to add a bit of extra time to take a look at this after your scheduled tour. If I had to do it over, I would pick a time earlier in the day, as it was a bit warm even with the air conditioning.

I am interested in visiting this attraction, but is it appropriate for small children (ages 7 & 5)? Are there any activities for them to participate in if we do a self-guided tour? Thanks!

The kids might be a little too young to understand everything and what the palace represents. There are a lot of nice things for them to look at that holds history. Don't know if they would really get anything out of the visit but I'm sure you and your husband would.

We will be visiting in April on a Saturday. We would like to take a self-guided tour. Is it necessary to get tickets ahead of time. I know approximately when we will get there but not an exact time.

Handicapped parking available and easy to find?

We took the bus, there is ample parking so I'm sure there is handicap parking to. Don't let that stop you from gong to see the palace, it's absolutely beautiful and worth seeing.

Should we do the guided tour or the self-guided audio tour? Recommendations?

We prefer docent led tour most of the time, and this was no exception. Docents usually fill in with additional history and we've found are proud to share their knowledge of a site that they love. Thank you to all docents everywhere!

How mush for ticket?

We could not get the guided tour tickets so we opted for the self guided at approximately $15 each. The self guided is completely fine as the palace is really not that big and the recorders give you a lot of information. Lovely tour.
