- AngelaMB12Hanover, Pennsylvania335 contributionsNice Medora, ND history lessonWe decided to take a tour and visit the information center and we are so glad we did. The museum was full of Medora, ND history and artifacts. The gift shop was nice with some local pieces for sale. The house tour was self paced but had guides. The house guides and information center lady were all very friendly, informative, and helpful. We highly recommend. - J MNorth Dakota60 contributionsMust stopI would recommend this stop to anyone. Take your time walking through the Chateau and read all the informational signs. The staff working in the Chateau were informative and could answer all questions. The ladies at the souvenir shop (Becky and Keshna) were helpful with all questions also. Please take the time and watch the movie before heading up the hill to the Chateau. The only down fall was there was only one shirt with the Chateau name on it. I would like to get ornimants with the Chateau De Mores name on it, not just generic North Dakota or Medora. We also did the Stage coach ride that was absolutely amazing how much fun we all had!!!!!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2024
- Sherry C485 contributionsGreat tourWe really enjoyed this self-guided tour and learning about more Medora history. There were docents available to answer any questions we had, and information was provided for each room and various artifacts with signs along the way. Very interesting. To think that this was just a "hunting lodge/summer home" is amazing to me. The view that they had from the wraparound porch was very inviting and I can imagine them sitting out there. This family has alot of history in Medora and we learned alot here. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go through the Interpretive Center, but I imagine that too is very well worth the time.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 August 2024

The museum has a great overview of Mores and his life and his serial entrepreneurship. The house is super interesting because of the fact that almost 90% of the furnishings and contents are from when Mores and his wife lived there. So, it is truly like walking into the past. It's not fancy, but the architecture is interesting and there is a lot of information about the town of Medora and about life in the midwest in the late 1800's. It's something different to see when you are out doing all the parks and nature hikes.

There are signs throughout Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Medora about the French marquis who came to the North Dakota badlands to try to setup a meatpacking operation and start a new town, and mostly failed before moving back East a few years later. When he did, he left behind the abandoned plant (whose chimney still stands) and the "Chateau," which was really a summer home for him. The Chateau completes this story.
The Chateau property includes a visitor's center with a movie and one room of exhibits that provides just the right amount of information about the Marquis and his family and includes some family heirlooms. Just up the road itself is the Chateau, which is both an impressive house for the 19th century frontier and also rather modest for this wealthy family. Most of the furnishings are original to the house, and almost the entire house is open for self-guided tours, though there is very knowledgeable staff onsite. This was an interesting property and worth the hour it took to visit it.

My husband and I were on a road trip and one of the planned stops was the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We had some time before heading over to the Medora Musical, so we stopped at the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site.
The house is in very good condition with original furnishings throughout. For the area, this is an opulent house. This isn't the Breakers in Rhode Island nor is it the Biltmore House in North Carolina. But in comparison to other frontier homes in the west, this was opulent. It's a self guided tour with docents throughout the house to answer on questions. There are rooms to see upstairs. I didn't see any elevator.

Started at the Visitor Center. Saw the movie and went through the two areas of the museum. Then we walked up the hill to tour the Chateau. Very interesting story about the French Marquis and his wife building a hunting cabin and then a meat packing plant and thus establishing the town of Medora. There were four interpreters in the Chateau who were very helpful and answered all our questions. Price was a little steep but we could see they were putting the money to good use.

We caught this historic property tour then visitor center on our museum day in town. We actually had quite a good time with this. There was an abundance of material, exhibits, and information to digest in this historic site and the docents at the site were really informative.
Gives you a window into the world of luxury prairie living if such things could exist. Worth a stop.

This tour is a critical piece to understanding the history of Medora. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and the Chateau was large and interesting. We loved the way they had it set up.... almost like Medora, et. al. still lived there!

The chateau has pretty views of the area from three directions. Volunteer docents share history with informative facts and stories. Talk a walk down to the horse pen, stable, root cellar, and carriage house. The lower buildings are not open.
