We decided to stop and visit the Saratoga Battlefield while driving back south from Maine, so to get there we had to make a bit of a detour to say the least. WE were guided in by GPS and I can say I was glad that was the case, because unlike a great many other National Historic Sites and Parks, there were no signs of any kind leading us to it. Usually about 20 miles out from a National park run facility you will start to see the ubiquitous brown signs with white lettering, no so with Saratoga where no signage of any type is in evidence until you get the the front gates. It's almost as if they've hidden it away. Once we got there late in the afternoon we didn't have more than a few hours, and it's just as well that we didn't since the buildings were closed for Covid (early June 2021). They had some Rangers sitting outside the building to hand out a map with instructions on how to take a guided tour, either walking or driving, using your smart phone. You could also watch the movie that was ordinarily shown inside the building on your smart phone. So that begs the question, if you can interact with the Rangers outside the building, why not just open the bloody building? With only a few hours to work with we decided to take the driving tour, stopping at every point and listening to the narration and exploring the terrain. I'm not sure my wife would have followed the narration very well even with the available signage without me there to fill in some of the details of the battle and the time line for her. Given the importance of the battle in the War for Independence I was extremely disappointed at the presentation of the field, especially in light of how well done the Yorktown Field is done in Virginia. I get that many see Yorktown as the mots important battle, but without Saratoga Yorktown would never have happened. There is so much more that could be done to present the Saratoga field, including construction of fortification lines similar to what was done at Yorktown to given the folks who aren't students of history a better idea of he conditions under which the battles were fought here. I can only imagine what someone whose knowledge of history comes from Hollywood movies must thing of when they look at the long rows of white stakes stuck in the ground and try and visualize the battle. Do they see WW1 trench lines? Do they see massed lines of infantry like a reply of Waterloo? There's no interpretation available to them to understand if they don't already know.

This National Park is devoted to the pivotal battle fought between the American revolutionaries and British forces. The battle was the first defeat of the British army in this period of history, and arguably altered world history.

Time budget for visitor’s center: 1 hour, nice audio-visual presentation outlining the battle.

If you want to drive the historic park and see the location of all major areas where the fighting occurred, budget half a day.

This was a cool adventure. It starts at the Visitors Center where they have a small gift shop, museum, and film. The rangers provide a driving/walking tour of the park that was helpful as I explored. There are several sites/stops under construction, but the two main battle areas are not incumbered.

My wife and I toured the battlefield with licensed guide Patrick Niles on Sunday, October 3, 2022. Patrick had warned us that some areas were closed due to extensive renovations, but we still saw all points of major interest. Patrick is a passionate student of the battle’s history and brought it to life. The tour starts in the visitor center, which has an introductory video and an excellent diorama that allows an easy understanding of the two-phase battle that took place on the same ground. Unlike major Civil War battlefields, there are very few monuments, giving it a pristine, the way-it-was feel. This was arguably the most important military event in American history. Allow three hours for the tour. Highly recommended. Patrick can be reached through the NPS Saratoga visitor center.

Visitor center was under construction when we visited (Sept), but ranger was available and shop was open. They have a QR code that takes you to a audioguide driving tour of the park. It was fantastic! We learned so much, and several of the stops can be very quick, a short walk/look-out point, and/or a longer walk. Lots of flexibility for amount of time and mobility level. Highly recommend.

Two senior adults visited Saratoga National Historical Park on a Wednesday in mid-August 2022. The Visitor Center was excellent and had a short film on the Battle of Saratoga. The rest of the exhibits thoroughly explained all aspects of the battle leading up to the surrender of the British in 1777. There is a very good auto tour road with ten stops along the way. You can download the audio tour and play on a smart phone. Unfortunately, some of the tour stops are being refurbished and closed to walk around on. You can still listen to the tour, just not walk around them. We had four stops closed on the day we were there. YMMV as this is a dynamic process. Due to rain, we did not travel to see ether Victory Woods or the surrender site. This was a great visit to a major turning place in American history.

If you enjoy history this is a must see. You can drive your car through a self guided tour which takes about 90 minutes to do. It was very informative about the battle for Saratoga. Admission for driving tour is free

I enjoyed the walking trial at the Saratoga National Historical Park because it showed so many important displays and artifacts in just a few miles. Although I did not take the driving tour, I was glad that they gave the opportunity to drive through the battlefields of Saratoga. I wish they had presented the importance of Battle of Saratoga more clearly. It was a nice, peaceful experience with my family.

This tour took us back in time to when Americans were still fighting British for their country. Each side won a battle here but in the end the Americans won out. We had a guide take us through the driving tour of the battlefields. You hear about siege warfare, German Subscription troops, Benedict Arnold, Canadian Subscription troops. It really pulled a lot of history together for me. It took two hours with the guide. They have plenty of picnic tables to enjoy a boxed lunch. The visitor’s center is very worthwhile and has some great reads and souvenirs of this National Historical Park.

This was a very interesting place to visit. One warning. A few of the stops on the 10 mile driving tour were closed due to construction. This did not negatively impact our experience. The audio portion that you can listen to on your smartphone is a must. Otherwise, it would be difficult to imagine/understand this pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War. In the Visitor Center there is a 20 minute movie that was well done and did help with our education. We did not know that Benedict Arnold was a real hero in this battle. Only 3 years later, he was a traitor.
