The building is where Nathaniel Hawthorne worked as a customs collector and is free and open to the public. Some of the old scales and equipment used to measure items for duties are there as well as the great architect of the building itself. It's...More

We randomly walked into this on our way down the street. The park ranger at the front door immediately engaged my kids, asking them what ship they came off of, and explaining why this House was important. While not a ton to see, it was...More

Stopped in here not knowing what it was. Spoke to some park rangers who were very knowledgeable. Spent about 20 min looking at the exhibit. Certainly worth seeing,

We visited the house but unfortunately, the second floor was closed so we breezed through the tour. Although self-guided there was a park official there answering any questions you had.

Hawthorne worked as a surveyor for 3 years! This is THE Custom House he wrote about in the into to the Scarlet Letter! Beautiful building! So interesting!

The cruise is about 1:45 long aboard a real sailing ship right out of history. Best trip and best value expense, I have ever taken.

A free tour, and such an informative guide! We were awed to see some of the articles that Nathaniel Hawthorn actually used while he worked there! better than the House of 7 Gables.
