About
Starting from the Douglas Bridge, Roberts Point Track winds up the true right of the Waiho (Franz Josef Glacier) Valley, over ice-carved rock and across many side streams to a viewpoint high above the glacial ice. In around an hour the track opens out onto ice smoothed rock outcrops at Hende's Hut. This hut is unsuitable for overnight accommodation, but it does provide a sheltered lunch spot. The track climbs on through open scrubland to a suspension bridge crossing Rope Creek and continues steadily upwards to Roberts Point. The views from here are well worth the effort with the glacier, sheer rock walls, waterfalls and mountain peaks all visible. Time: 5 hr return from Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park; or 5 hr 20 min return from glacier car park Distance: 11 km return from Alex Knob/Lake Wombat car park; or 12.3 km return from glacier car park Please contact the Franz Josef Visitor Centre for safety updates before attempting this track.

Great walk, a must do if in FJ
Apr 2021
Loved this walk. Def recommend it if you have the time. What a surprise to see the glacier when we got to the top. You do have to be careful. We just wore trail shoes, had plenty of water in our camel packs (as that means no carrying of anything) cameral swinging of my neck. We are in our late 50's, took us about 2.15 up and the same down. Sometimes going down is harder than going up. It is a great walk as it has bridges, water crossing, rock climbing etc. We loved it and would def recommend it.

This IS amazing but also advanced - like the sign says!

OK we are experienced hikers but definitely be PREPARED for a difficult hike - particularly the latter part past the historic hut. BUT spectacular scenery is your reward! There is an abundance of slippery mossy covered stones and rocks that you will encounter on the way. Lots of up and down and steep drops if you take a step wrong. The incredible 110 metre swing bridge about an hour in is stunning! 2 other swing bridges and the 120 very cool mountain hugging steps just past the hut will make you wonder how/who put them there - really really cool!
We had our 14 year old son with us who was like a mountain goat - no fear - but yes we (in our early 50's) ensured we watched our step. Hubby took a nasty fall slipping down the bank with a tree stump saving him from a very long and steep walk back to the track. It was very slow and steady after that. Take a stick if you can - you won't regret it. The views from the lookout are so so worth it. We had a grey day and light sprinkles of rain sporadically. Ensure you have drink (although plenty of waterfalls to drink from) and food, take a warm jacket and good hiking shoes/boots. It's 11.2 kms, took us just under 7 hours (the last 2 hours we were quite slow though) - safe bet would be 6 hours with stops. Just do it.

What a fantastic day. Swing bridges, crazy steps to cliff face and stunning view of glacier at end of track. Time frame given to complete plus advice on fitness/experience were accurate.

Hard Hike but worth the pain

Park at the first parking lot, not the main bigger lot will save you a bit of walking. This hike is hard mainly due to the track’s ruggedness and you have to pay close attention to the orange trail markers to follow along the track. If the weather is good, start early so you can have the glacier all to yourself up close.

The view in the end is sooo worth it but be prepared for a HARD walk
Dec 2019
We are a couple quite experienced with trekkings and this was a proper tramping (meaning that you have to "climb" some sections on bare rock).
It was a nice walk. Is just that we weren't expecting what we encountered, was much harder than expected.

Hard and rewarding

Nice and quite hiking track early in the morning, I would say one of the most expensive walks I have done with all the bridges :)

Like a super hike

I’m the most non agile, heavy footed person I know and this hike took me 6 and a half hours (everyone else does it in 5) but I’m glad I did it. Waterfall and river crossings were tricky and a couple of times I took my shoes and socks off and waded across rather than risk falling in (because I always fall in and walking in wet shoes is horrible). It was very wet and slippery and I slipped and fell literally 50 metres from the top and landed on my backside but the swing bridges, the steps wrapped around the hill and the viewing platform were very cool and made everything worth it. If you’re sure-footed you will love this hike.

You can fly in helicopter to see the Franz Josef glacier, or you can hike up for free!

This is a very challenging hike. If you feel uncertain after the first river crossing and first swing bridge its probably best to turn back. That being said it is an awesome hike. It took me an hour and a half to climb up and an hour and 10 mins to decend. There are numerous suspension bridges, waterfalls and rivers to cross along the way. Steep rocky parts are slippery when wet and trees over hang the path so its easy to hit your head on a tree if you get too close to the edge. Tree roots and jagged rocks underfoot mean that you really need to concentrate the whole time. The views from the top are spectacular, not only of the Franz Josef glacier which is noticeably receding, but the waterfalls and sheer cliffs and the river below. Bring a snack to enjoy at the top and admire the stunning birds eye view of the glacier.

Awesome intense hike!

This is a great hike! It is not easy though. Our 13 year old son was the youngest hiker we saw on the track and for good reason. It takes about 5 1/2 to 6 hours round trip, but the views from the top are fantastic. Bring a jacket for when you get to the top, and a snack is nice too. You'll be glad you did. Loved this hike.
