This visitor center was one of the best we have visited in the South island- friendly staff and even good souvenirs. Staff took initiative to help and there was a small cafe there too. Extensive map collection and lots of helpful information. A must stop in town.

The Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre is located on Cron Street and is open from 8.30am to 5pm daily.

This is a good place and opportunity to find information and maps on area hikes, weather, road conditions and other general travel information you might need. There are also gifts, souvenirs and plenty of brochures for other areas of South Island that you may intend to visit during your travels. Staff are on hand to answer travel related questions you have.

Note: the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre is located in the same building as the local i-Site, which can also help you will activity and tour arrangements as well as local accommodation and dining options.

We traveled over Haast Pass where the scenery was breathtaking. We crossed the longest single-land bridge in New Zealand. The scenery is rugged, isolated, harsh, and remote settlements tucked into the hillsides. Westland Tai Poutini National Park is home to both the fox and Fran Josef Glaciers. The Visitor Center is new and modern. The amazing audiovisual exhibit helps you to understand the uniqueness of New Zealand.
I leaned a lot about glaciers and faults.

We went to the new visiytor center to inquire some walks in the region last week. A very nice gentleman at DOC gave us some walk suggestions in the region, which is very helpful. The new visitor center have DOC, i-Site, Franz Josef Guide and Hot poo, all in one stop. A must visit place to get the information!

The glacier is slowly receding. They are going to have to extend the trail to get a better view of the glacier. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful explaining things.

The Westland National Park visitor centre was a stunning place to visit in the late 70s. It was full of highly informed rangers - men and women who were passionate to share their knowledge and love of this great place. There were free lectures and talks most evenings and free trips out with the rangers during the day. I know the world move on but returning after 35 years has been such a disappointment. Dear NZ conservationists and outdoors lovers do you really want to be flogging expensive trips which create noise and congestion? People can respond to the environment in all its beauty and diversity without being offered constant thrills for low attention spans. You have real treasure here - guard it well.
