This track is now closed
Jan 2021 • Couples
As of when we visited in December 2020, this track is closed due to land slides. You can walk until you begin to descend down to the bridge, but then the track is barriered off.

It's closed at the moment

We saw the sign saying this walk but decided to go as far as was safe. Unfortunately this was not too far, there is a barrier. Work needs to be done to stabilise the area possibly due to a land slip. There is a sign on the entry to the path which also goes to the tunnels stating which one is open and which is closed, it was only posted at the end of Jan 20 so not long ago. Walk along path through native forest is good though.

Nice walk, but not a must do in west coast
Sep 2019
Pleasant rain forest walk. the bridge is at the end of the track and you will face the cliff! If you have a busy plan and have visited some of forest tacks in west coast, I don't recommend this walk. There are some other tracks that you may consider in Franz Joseph in the same way of glacier view.

It s not a loop
Apr 2019
Starting point really inside Franz Joseph Downtown
Easy trail, no specific view till the end
You are on rain forest
Pleasant track, safe
You ll end up to the bridge
You should come back via the same way, you can try to follow the river bank
But be so careful, the water level can suddenly goes up
Dangerous way

A lovely way to start or end your day
Apr 2019 • Solo
It's an easy walk (allow 1.5 hrs in total) to the beautiful gorge, past waterfalls and stunning ferns. I did my walk in the afternoon and only saw one other person on the trail.

It's relatively flat, with some short gentle incline sections but can be done by kids. No need to be super fit.

The suspension bridge at the end was the highlight

Fairly easy walk with nice Waterfall on the way
Mar 2019 • Couples
We did the Callery Gorge bridge walk in the afternoon, there were a few people on their way back when we were heading out, but overall we basically had the whole walk to ourselves. It's uphill most of the way there if that bothers you (which also means it's mostly downhill on the way back), and fairly steep in places, but the track is good and easy to follow. There's a waterfall on the way up which presents a good photo opportunity.

A long walk for a bridge
Dec 2018 • Couples
A 40 minute one way walk (1hr 20 minute return) to the gorge which ends at a suspension bridge. The suspension bridge is interesting as it does not continue i.e. you have to turn around walk all the way back to Cowan Street. It also has a load limit of only four people.

There is a wooden bridge just before the suspension bridge which you could mistake for the end of the walk, but keep going.

At the suspension bridge you get pretty good views of Waiho River (that flows from Franz Joseph Glacier) and of the Callery River / Gorge.

If you are felling adventurous, you could walk back to town along the Waiho River (on the rock bank); however the river water level is known to be able to rise quickly as well as regular rock falls - - - this is not recommended.
