We took the $12 per person shuttle to avoid driving our caravan and hassling to park. Shuttle was enjoyable with good service and an easy hike with fine views. Hike is free.

A lot has been said and written about the Franz Josef Glacier. Come and see it for yourself, before it’s gone! It’s great, that the local area hasn’t become over run and over developed. The glacier is magnificent, even in its reduced stated. The walk...More

We walked from town, and it was a good 4 km to the car park, and about 2 km past that to the end of the permitted path. From there, the face of the glacier was visible, but at least another half km distant. The...More

It is worth getting to the car-park before 9am if possible to guarantee somewhere to park. There is quite a large free car park but a few buses and a cloud of camper vans soon fill it. The walk is on a wide path. There are...More

A smooth and short helicoptor ride to the glacier followed by a couple of hours walking on the glacier itself, courtesy of Franz Josef Heli Hikes. They provided boots, crampons and all the equipment you could need, provided interesting info and gave us time to...More

No rope bridge on the shortest walk to the glacier. Worth going to Fox glacier as well. Restaurants in short supply for quality in the town. We tried a lot and found nothing that great. Depends what you want of course.
