We booked a guide to walk us up to the nearest viewing point of the glacier. The guide was great, well informed, humorous and took us on back routes away from the usual visitors. We learnt a lot about the glacier but also plants, the waterfalls and rocks. Its all about timing but having set off in gloomy misty conditions,... More

With hindsight we should have taken a helicopter, as others did in our group, to view this. Although the walk from the car park is fine to capture the magnificent glacier one does need to be on it or at least much closer to be able to see it.

We can't walk far and we are too poor to afford a flight, so we did the 20 minute walk to see the glacier. Glad we did because it appeared to give us a jolting glimpse of what climate change is doing. The photos on the board at the end of the walk show how the glacier has retreated over... More

Wow, what an amazing sight. A nice easy walk in to the glacier past the stunning trident falls. Far superior to the Fox Glacier

My family visited the Franz Josef Glacier in April for Fall Break. The views were amazing. The trail was nicely paved. For the more adventurous there were longer trails to follow.

I suppose someone's opinion of the glacier will depend on their experience with other glaciers. If you have never seen one before, then this is certainly worth doing. If you have seen many glaciers you might find this to be a something less than others. If you are up for a hike, you can get fairly close to the base... More

The 1 1/2 hour walk is definitely worth the up close view of the glacier. The walk itself is pretty easy and doesnt seem too long. There are gorgeous waterfalls to pass on the way. Go on a day with good weather to get a good view.

We walked along an excellently prepared route to see the Franz Josef Glacier. The route was well signposted with information boards giving the fascinating history of the movement of the Glacier, which is, sadly, now in quite a hasty retreat. So just imagine the HUGE excitement when we could suddenly see the turquoise coloured ice river up the mountain! It... More
