About
Lonely Planet voted the West Coast Wildlife Centre in the heart of Franz Josef as one of the 12 must see things to visit in New Zealand. This is the largest kiwi hatching facility in the South Island and the "must see" indoor all weather attraction in Franz Josef – home to the official hatching facility for the world's 2 rarest kiwis – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka. See live kiwi during the day inside our nocturnal house, discover the interactive glacier attraction and West Coast storytelling areas or go behind the scenes on the “Backstage Pass Tour” and see live kiwi chicks and meet the friendly kiwi ranger staff. Numbers are very limited on the 30 minute Backstage Pass Tour so booking are highly recommended to avoid disappointment. The best shopping in Franz Josef can be found here inside the all weather facility -and enjoy free Wi-Fi in the cafe to keep connected to family and friends. Enjoy a coffee or a snack in the cafe – or pick up a pack lunch for your day of adventure. Open from 8.30am daily – 365 days. Set aside 1-2 hours for your visit. All tickets purchased are valid for 24 hours so you can come back and see the kiwi as many times as you like within that period !.

- Happymumof47 contributionsWet weather attractionVery average place with very overpriced entry fees. We paid around $130 for 2 adults and a 14 year old and 16 year old. Was there for about 30 minutes and saw 2 kiwis and a few tuataras. The gift shop was lovely. Thanks for placing a review and disappointed by your comments as it looks like you paid the incorrect pricing ?. Our family pass ( 2 A and up to 3C ) for unlimited 48 hr entry is terrific vale for money at $95 and not $130 ?. Do drop us an email -info@wildkiwi.co.nz with the time and date of your visit and we will find the transaction and of course refund you the difference.👍 Our attraction best suits the inquisitive guests to explore our Glacier Attraction,West Coast Storytelling area, Predator Free 2050 and other films and interactives. - Pumpkin20Bathurst, Australia332 contributionsA Kiwi sighting!I was particularly excited to see a Kiwi and was not disappointed! Enjoyed watching him/her running around, they are much bigger than I thought! Enjoyed all the other information about Kiwis I found it all very interesting & disturbing at how endangered they are. The bit we did not enjoy was the public holiday surcharge! We are hoping that a large portion of our entry fee will be used to help protect these gorgeous birds.Delighted that you really enjoyed your visit ! Sorry about a credit card surcharge (15%)for a public holiday but you might have noticed most businesses in Franz Josef now close on public holidays due to incredible cost of labour .It costs most businesses around $4,000 in additional holiday loading costs just to open which sadly is no longer economical . I am pleased to say however that we do open but recover just a small amount of monies to help subsidize this.Written 3 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- Brian RGreystones, Ireland21 contributionsGreat way to spend a morningCame across this centre not expecting much but hoping to get a glimpse of a Kiwi in real life. Well this visit didn’t disappoint. I paid extra for the back stage tour and so glad I did. I was there at 10am and turned out so was the only person the tour. (It’s very busy on rainy days). So I had the undivided attention of Steve who gave me do much great info about Kiwis and the work of the centre in helping them survive. He then gave me the up close meet with the Tuatara- what an interesting creature- and no it’s not a lizard. The kiwi encounter is open to all who pay admission not just the backstage tour. Once your eyes adapt to the dark (give it a few minutes) there they were! Much bigger, faster and louder than I expected. Fell in love with them! It was a great way to spend a morning. Special thanks to Steve for making the visit so memorable.Thank you Brian for sharing your review and delighted that you really enjoyed your visit 🙏 Our kiwi ranger fully guided tours (VIP Backstage Pass Tours) are highly recommended and I will pass on your thanks and appreciation to Steve who is a really passionate and talented member of the team. Together with the Department of Conservation and iwi we have helped bring the worlds rarest kiwi (rowi) back from the very edge of extinction and more and more eggs are now being left to survive in predator free areas in the wild. When we first set up the facility there were less than 140 rowi kiwi left alive in the wild and today over 600 -with 385 of these birds hatched and incubated at the West Coast Wildlife Centre.A wonderful community and team partnership 🙏Written 6 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 1 December 2023
- Roxana DumitruCluj-Napoca, Romania21 contributionsBest activity during a rainy dayThis was a very interesting tour, we learned a lot about kiwis life. Our guide-Steve was very well prepared and the tour was like a story. New Zealand is a lesson for the entire world how to protect nature and also how to make nature reborn. We managed to see 2 kiwi birds and they were quite active. We recommend the tour, it took only 45 minute and the entering ticket has a 48 hours validity. Thanks for the 5 star review and really appreciated the shout out to Steve our Ranger guide and the VIP Backstage Pass Tour. In NZ we are very protective of our highly endangered native species and it’s a great privilege to be able to help bring the 2 rarest of kiwi species back from the edge of extinction -in partnership with the Department of Conservation. Our guests tells us the 48 hours unlimited entry pass is great value for money and we really appreciate you sharing your review with future guests 🙏Written 7 February 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- spinfieldIlkley, United Kingdom31 contributionsDon’t miss the kiwis! We’re often sceptical of these ‘wildlife’ experiences but can’t praise this one enough. We bought the ‘behind the scenes, 48 hour’ pass and it was well worth it. We spent a fascinating hour with Steve, who gave us a great insight into the amazing conservation and kiwi population increasing work that they do at the centre. He was so knowledgeable and had a number of interesting videos/props. The viewing of the actual kiwis (2x year old birds) was a real highlight of our trip to New Zealand. To watch them so close up and hear them snuffling in the search for food was unforgettable. Our 48 hour pass gave us 3 chances to pop in and see them again before we left. Fabulous!Thank you for the 5 star review and delighted that you really enjoyed your VIP Backstage Pass Tour with Steve. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and entertaining team members who are so passionate about the work with do -in partnership with the Department of Conservation-to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the edge of extinction.👍🙏.The 48 hour pass is really great value for money and that you do much for highlighting this for future guests.Written 11 February 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2024
- SkemOwl31 contributionsRare Rowi kiwis in a simulated habitatThe wildlife centre has created a perfect environment for rearing and viewing kiwis. The ticket is valid for 48 hours so you can choose the best time, which seems to be morning. We were made very welcome, and given an introduction to the facility. It's quite dark in there and can take 10 minutes to be able to see properly. The kiwis are very close and quite active. We were enchanted. They also have tuatata lizards (also rare). Try challenging them to a staring match! Thanks so much for the 5-star review and for sharing your feedback with future guests. The 48 hour passes we are told represents excellent value for money and so pleased that you really enjoyed your visit. With less than 600 rowi kiwi left alive in the wild we have hatched and incubated over 385 of these helping bring the worlds rarest kiwi -the rowi - back from the very edge of extinction.Your visit and the monies spent with us are helping to fund the work we do -in partnership with The Department of Conservation.Written 25 March 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024
- valkrie1235Dallas, Texas16 contributionsBest place to see Kiwis! An absolute gem of a spot! My family stopped at a few Kiwi centers and aviaries during our trip and this one was by far the best place to see a Kiwi. The habitat takes up a large % of the building and we were able to see two of the birds very easily even in the darkness. They were quite active and utterly adorable! There is a wall up to about belly level and don’t miss the glass near the ground, when the kiwis come up to the wall you can see them so well. The owner was actually working the counter when we arrive and he was so excited to share about the center and his conservation efforts. A must see while in Franz Josef!Thank you so much for your kind review and delighted that you really enjoyed your visit . All our team are so very passionate about our facility and the work we are doing -in partnership with the Department of Conservation to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the edge of extinction. - Maxi K2 contributionsVery nice and interesting museum for everyone who loves kiwis! We came in only 45 minutes before closing and bought a regular entry ticket. Time was a little too short, but you can actually come in again the next day with your ticket to read everything you missed. However, for watching the two kiwis in the dark, the timing was absolutely perfect, so I encourage everyone to step in. Even if there is not much time left that day. The information on the boards was very interesting and nicely visualized. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well. Considering they are doing a good deed with the ticket money, I can only recommend the visit.Thank you Maxi for the 5 star review and so pleased that you really enjoyed your visit and had a wonderful kiwi viewing experience 😀.The unlimited re-entry over a 48 hour period represents great value for money and I’m so pleased that you recognized this to share with future guests. We payed $80 for 2 adults to see 2 birds in a pitch black room. It was so hard to see the birds I would appreciate if they would turn up the brightness. I understand that the creatures are nocturnal but if you want to charge $80 you better make the customer feel like they have had an intimate experience with this bird. The rest of the centre is very outdated and the needs updating. $5 per person no more and then I would be happy for what they offer.

KIa ora Montana,
Thanks for placing a review.
It really does sound like you must have left our facility not realising that you have just had the privilege of seeing the worlds rarest kiwi -and that you cannot simply "turn up the brightness" in our kiwi nocturnal house -in order to give you a better viewing experience.
Kiwi are only active in the dark and you really do need to take the time to stop, look, listen and engage -in order to get the most out of our award winning attraction.
All our kiwi go back to live in the wild so we allow kiwi to behave as naturally as possible to suit themselves - rather than to suit us humans.
You must have missed the glacier attraction, brand new Tuatara Encounter,Wildlife films and Wild West Coast storytelling areas ?
Looks like you also needed to have upgraded your ticket to include the Kiwi and Tuatara Backstage Pass Tours in order to get that guided tour and intimate experience that you were looking for.
Travel safely and enjoy the rest of your time in NZ.

This was an unexpected surprise. When planning our stay in Franz Josef I had not factored this in as a place to visit. However, as it rained for the 3 days we were staying it was a must do in door activity, and it exceeded all expectations. The nocturnal house is the best in NZ we have been to. There is no glass between you and the kiwis and we were able to spend 10-15 mins in there with no one else. A bonus of no overseas tourists. The 2 kiwis were active the whole time. With a 24 hour pass (as it was still raining the next day) we were able to just pay the extra and did the behind the scenes tour. So informative. Learned all about the Rowi kiwi and how it is only found in the Okarito forest. Saw 2 kiwi chicks and now very envious to see posts on FB that chicks have been released into the nocturnal enclosure. The wildlife centre do an amazing job for kiwi conservation.

My husband went quad biking and I thought taking the little one to see a kiwi birds would be a nice family activity. Paid $40 to go in and it is a black room where with a 1yr old child it is impossible to see the bird. You need to have a lot of patience and stand in complete silence to have any hope of a glimpse of it in the dark. I told the ladies at the counter that I was here to show my 1year old a kiwi, they could have easily advised that it’s so dark a child won’t see it and you need to be silent so it’s not the best for a toddler. No one shares this information so it was a complete waste of money. I then needed a child change room and they didn’t have one and were very rude when I asked if I could come back after changing him and if they knew where I could change him. Overall it was a horrible experience.

Thanks for taking the time to place feedback and the team and are are pretty disappointed by your response and clearly our facility was not for you or your one year old child.
Kiwi are a nocturnal bird and you do need to take the time to stop, look and listen quietly in order for the birds to feel comfortable foraging around as they do in the wild.
If you mention to the team that you are struggling to see the worlds rarest kiwi (rowi) then our wildlife staff will take you back into the nocturnal room with a special infa-red torch to make the viewing experience exceptional.
Your one year old child (who went in for free )and yourself would have needed to be very quiet in order for this to happen and because there a very low light levels this might have been challenging.
Perhaps you were expected some kind of a zoo experience ?
All our kiwi go back to live permanently in the wild so we are very very different to this.
The viewing experience can be fantastic for young children and the great news is that the ticket you purchased is valid for 24 hours so come on back in as many times as you like over this time period and there is no additional cost!.
We do have a children’s change table available in our larger disabled toilet .
Perhaps you could have missed the kids tour, the indoor glacier attraction, live tuatara encounter.and films with West Coast Storytelling areas ?
Do come back in and visit again and we would be delighted to take you personally back through our award winning facility.

Visited the wildlife centre under the Back to the Future $199 package where you get a night at the Rainforest Retreat, entry to this place and a helicopter ride.
I though that this would be a typical kiwi viewing experience behind glass but no. A walkway through the kiwi habitat with a barrier up to your waist. I have done this twice now. Once with my partner and son in August and this time I dragged my parents from Auckland here. The first time the kiwis in the enclosure were about to be released into the wild. They were ready to go. One came right up to the barrier and slid his beak right up the barrier to sus us out. We could have easily patted him but didn’t know if we should and quite honestly just froze as scared we would scare him off. But it seemed like he just gave up on us in disgust that we weren’t helping him to escape and lost interest. He was definitely ready for the wild. This time they again had 2 kiwis in there, but they had only been in there for a couple of weeks. They were a couple of months old. One thought he was road runner and had us utterly amused with his antics racing back and forward, trying to pick fights with the other one. The sensible on (I presume it was a female) came pretty close to the barrier and we watched how she fed and drank water. Really interesting how they put their whole long beak into the water to suck it up. First time I realised how much personality and antics kiwis actually have. Not the dull, shy, boring birds we are led to believe. So feel really privileged to finally see kiwis and their personalities first hand. It’s taken me 50 years and really exceeded my expectations.
The overall centre is great with an interactive glacier part which was really good too and a fab tuatara enclosure with 4-6 tuataras. Really big so we spent ages there too and enjoyed watching them get fed. They go from not moving at all to knowing feeding time is coming and moving closer to the feeding place and then you really see them move!
However for me the kiwis were the highlight and you can go and see them as many times as you want during a 24 hour period. We went through a few times.
Thank you to all the staff at the wildlife centre for your work you do with these endangered species. It is truly humbling to hear about all the work you are doing to save the kiwi. Again can’t recommend this place enough!!

We booked the afternoon VIP Guided backstage tour for around $60 each. Usually we are on a tight budget and would thoroughly research “value for money” opinions on things like this but, being a wildlife conservation centre we decided that no matter what the tour was like it would be worth investing some money into kiwis regardless.
Laurie was a great guide and whilst we were out of season for eggs and chicks we got a look at the incubator room and “nursery” with a great load of information about kiwis and the work the centres/DOC are doing to increase their numbers.
We then went to see the Tuatara in their backstage enclosure and learnt loads about this 250 million year old DINOSAUR! So cool. Laurie had one that she held so we could get a closer look and whilst we were gutted we couldn’t have a hold too, it is absolutely understandable!
Due to being on the final tour of the day, we didn’t have time afterwards to look around the centre which I hadn’t anticipated. But we were given permission to renter the following day to see the bits we hadn’t a chance to see. (If you only have one day, I would suggest booking an earlier tour or doing the centre prior to the afternoon tour. I would have been very disappointed if we didn’t have time to go back).
We did get a quick sneak into the nocturnal exhibit and saw the 2 kiwis pecking away. They are quite hard to see but you get the idea at least. They are incredibly fascinating birds and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
If you like zoos you actually might be disappointed. But if you have a genuine interest in kiwis or just wildlife then you can’t go wrong. Learning about them was just as interesting for me as seeing them.
Now I desperately hope to see one in the wild!

The West Coast Wildlife Centre has been a highlight of my stay in the West Coast. All the staff I interacted with were friendly and helpful. The amount of information provided about the kiwi, the glaciers and the tuatara was so great. I was lucky enough to see two kiwi in the nocturnal room. I loved the glass bottom to the fence so you could crouch down and see the kiwi at their level. I did have to say to some other visitors to be quiet in there - it seemed like they thought it should be more like a zoo! For those with the respect and patience to see such a special bird - this is the next best thing to seeing one in the wild!

We went first thing in the morning due to the weather being a bit wet. What a great experience seeing the kiwi and tuatara plus all the other informative displays. We then finished off having a coffee and some beautiful home made goodies - Donna in the Cafe is your typical friendly "kiwi" who makes you feel at home and also will make you laugh. Highly recommend.

Really enjoyed this experience! Came into Franz Josef on a rainy day, and was really excited to see that there was a Wildlife Centre. When we visited we got to see two 2 month old Rowi Kiwi! The enclosure lets you get up close to view them, versus other places I've been where they are completely behind a glass wall.
The fact that one entry fee gives you 24 hours to come back and see the Kiwi is great, as we were able to go back the next morning before we headed out. The gift shop was also worth a visit - lots of cool stuff!
We got the "Wet & Wild" combo, which gave us entry into both the Wildlife Centre and the Hot Pools down the road which saved us a few bucks, and both places were definitely worth the visit!

Thanks so much for the 5 star review and so pleased that you made the most of the 24 hour ticket to revisit as many times as you like for no additional charge ..
The Wet and Wild combo is excellent value for money and a great way to relax after your visit.

This conservation centre features Rowi Kiwis which, like all Kiwis, are an endangered species. The birds can be observed in a special unit which is set up to simulate night-time - the birds are nocturnal. It was a very special experience to sit in the dark, in silence watching these special little birds moving around and foraging for food. It felt like a real privilege to be able to see them.
The centre has displays on native reptiles and birds, on the Franz Josef glacier and glaciation in general. The tickets are not cheap but you can use them over 24 hours (you are issued with a wristband) and so it is possible to visit more than once. There is a lovely cafe and a gift shop too.

Thanks Shirley for taking the time to place a review and delighted that you enjoyed your visit.
To date we have hatched over 320 rowi kiwi in partnership with the Department of Conservation and your visit has helped us to continue to work hard to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the edge of extinction.
The team and myself hope you are keeping safe and looking forward to getting open again after the current challenges we all are facing.

The facility is well designed and the kiwi and tuatara displays are professionally presented, but this wildlife centre needs a bit more wildlife to be worth $36 per adult. To be fair, a blackboard outside the centre advised us before entry that we could expect to see two rowi kiwi and seven or eight tuatara (I think we saw two of the latter), so I’m not suggesting we weren’t warned in advance. The displays were interesting and informative but just lacking in critters. It was more like a museum than a wildlife centre, and frankly, quite overpriced.

Thanks for taking the time to place a review -your visit is helping fund us to continue our work to bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the very edge of extinction. As the South Island’s largest kiwi incubation and 🐣 hatching facility the team -in partnership with the Department of Conservation has successfully hatch 385 rowi kiwi -there are less than 600 left alive in the wild today.
You may have missed out backstage pass tours which to be frank are pretty amazing 🤩 or our Wild West Coast or Glacier attractions and many films.
Enjoy the rest of your time in beautiful Franz Josef 🙏

And dose there allow take a picture

Thanks for the questions. There are 5 types of kiwi in New Zealand and the rarest is only found near Franz Josef and is called the rowi kiwi with less than 450 left alive in the wild today.
At the West Coast Wildlife Centre we hatch the rowi kiwi in partnership with the Department of Conservation - and it is here that you are guaranteed to see the birds up close and personal.
All our rowi kiwi go back into the wild.
On the Kiwi Backstage Pass Tour you are allowed to take photos of our kiwi chicks.

hi id like a refund due to spending $38 for 3 minutes at the 'wildlife center' and after the lady with a large build, around the age of 30, had an awful unprofessional attituded and was rude. very disappointed. please can you process a full refund for me and my partner, or guide me to where I can obtain this. thanks in advance. Darren

A real shame you were disappointed with your visit. 3 minutes really isn't enough time to enjoy the experience, so really that's on you for not slowing down to take it all in. These kiwis are one of NZs rarest, so it really is a privilege to see them up close. Also, there is a fantastic display with info about the glaciers and history of the local area. Really is quite good if you take the time to read and enjoy the center and it's set up.The $ raised from this project goes toward the research and preservation of this species, a worthwhile cause if you ask me.

hi, today I visited the center, and was out the exit within 3 minutes. this being much smaller than I thought, and a major disappointment, being that I barely saw a kiwi bird, I enquired about a refund as I felt $38 was very overpriced. The woman who answered was extremely abrupt and had an awful attitude, she was the lady with a larger build. I would like to enquire about a refund still, or if you could please direct me to a manager. thanks in advance, Darren

There were three Kiwis in the special enclosure, you had to allow your eyes to get used to the darkness. I had asked all these questions before I went in and my expectations were already set. I accepted that the fee went towards the work of the centre. There was plenty to keep us occupied for an hour or two. I had no problems with any of the staff. I do think that posting a member of staff in the enclosure to discuss kiwis would have been a good thing to do.

We hatch the rowi kiwi and the Haast tokoeka kiwi and you are guaranteed to see kiwi in the open and very natural nocturnal house.
