About
The first 800 metres of track is along the river stop bank. A short, but steady climb then takes you through rainforest to the top of this granite outcrop, where you will get commanding views of the sea and lowlands to one side, and up the Waiho River to the glacier and Southern Alps Kā Tiritiri o te Moana from the other. The granite of Canavans Knob is much older than the schist rocks of the glacier valley across the Alpine Fault Line, and therefore it survived the scraping of glacier ice 9000 years ago. Getting there 1.2 kilometres south of Franz Josef turn right into a sign-posted car park and the start of the Canavans Knob Walk. Time from car park: 1 hr return Distance from car park: 3.2 km return Alternatively, walk from Franz Josef across the Waiho River Bridge and turn sharp right onto a stop bank. Follow along until you see the track markers for the track. Time from Franz Josef township: 1 hr 40 min return Distance from Franz Josef township: 6.3 km return

Great lookout
Feb 2020 • Couples
A great short walk on a good or bad day. There is a good car park just west of the Franz Josef bridge. The walk follows along the flood defences and then through the forest to the lookout near the summit. On a good day you will get a good view of the Franz Josef glacier. Round trip about 1 hour.

View was average
May 2019 • Family
Because the road to the glacier was closed, we took this walk in hope of having a better view. However, the weather conditions were not that great, it kept drizzling and the clouds were low. Hence, the view was average.

The first 10 mins of the walk was alright and relatively easy on a flat ground. Thereafter, there was some hiking to be done which involved climbing up pathways made of rocks. That was a little tiring.

The end of the walk was a little abrupt because it ended at a small place with a bench.

1 hour round trip

A Beautiful scenic walk, steep in parts and quiet hilly. A lot of loose pebbles, rocks with moss and very damp areas so not suitable for people at risk of Falls. It is a Lovely hike though and it takes an hour to complete

only worth doing if you have the time.

If you're restricted on time, I would recommend giving this one a miss and focusing your effort towards other rewarding walks (e.g. Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson). The walk is quite steep, mostly uphill and the pay off is just a slightly higher view of the glacier (you see just a little more of the ice) from view. In retrospect I wouldn't have done this. Unless you're a fan of uphill walking; I would overlook this one.
Also important: there is a sign PARALLEL to the street the car park is on. So you'll have to look out for it as you drive. I nearly missed it.

Pleasant one hour return walk
Jul 2017 • Couples
Canavan's Knob walk is approximately an hour return climb to views of glacier and coast. Walk through the rain forest to reach the lookout at the summit with the views over Waiho river valley.
