There are several hikes that originate from the Franz Josef glacier car park, around 4 km drive from the town centre. This is a short 900 metre walk that takes no more than 15-20 minutes to complete, taking visitors through brush covered rocks and relatively...More

Visited on Thursday 10th May. It was a wet afternoon and we wanted to see Franz Josef Glacier so did this walk which is 20 minutes return. You are a fair way from the glacier but the view is still good even in the rain.

We've flown over and walked glaciers in Alaska, Canada and Antarctica, so there was no compelling reason to take the 15 minute flight over or one of the longer helicopter tours. This was a very enjoyable, and easy walk, with very little change in elevation...More

The Sentinel Rock Walk is a relatively short walk on the way to the Franz Josef Glacier and is well worth the effort for anyone wanting a quick hike and who is short on time. The view at the top is absolutely breathtaking.

Thanks to the DOC officer preparing me for this journey as I would not have anticipated the steep climb. Needs more info even for a minute walk for an asthmatic such as myself.

This walk is pretty easy. Not flat but no very steep climbs. Can be done in 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace (each way).
