Due to weather, our 30 min Mt.Cook/Fox Glacier was moved to a 20 min Fox Glacier only with a snow landing, but we didn't care. It was an unreal experience to be wisked away to the glacier, than the mountain top to see everything up...More
If taking a helicopter or a guided trip onto the glacier is not within your budget, the walk our to the terminal face (or at least 750 meters from it) is a great way to see the glacier. You deeply appreciate the changing nature of...More
Very easy viewing from the Glacier View road. This is an unsealed road but well maintained and not long. The walking track is closed due to land slip and flooding at the moment but you can still get a snap from the other road mentioned...More
The track opens at 9am to public, you only allowed to hike within the allowed trekking path. Enjoy the scenic view and don’t forget to bring some water with you. Please don’t feed the wild birds if you see one. And please don’t leave your...More
We actually enjoyed Fox Glacier more than Franz Josef. We did the short walk down through the forest and there was something charming about seeing the glacier by peering through the trees. It felt like the path less trodden and more intimate.
It was pretty cool to see but did the Franz Josef on the same day and the Franz Josef was way cooler.
It was good weather (though it did rain a little) but it was a bit of a climb up to the view point...More
The walk is quite hilly though a bit shorter than Franz Joseph - probably unsuitable for anyone who is elderly or infirm. The valley is spectacular with massive high cliffs on the far side of the river. The glacier itself has clearly retreated a fair...More
Visited both glaciers, found fox the easier to get to and the more interesting. There is also a road to a look out on the south side of the river. Try going near dusk as the tourists are gone and you can explore the rocks.
We were very disappointed with Fox glacier. It’s quite a steep 1.5km or so walk to the terminal face, which at the moment is 450m from the glacier. The glacier was covered in dirt so not at all white. Good but I’d exercise after sitting...More
There are no activities at Fox Glacier. It is a walk. However, when we visited in April, the road had been taken out by a landslide and we had to walk along the riverbed. We gave up and viewed it from a distance.

I guess you could potentially drive from Christchurch to Fox Glacier in one day, depending on the time of your glacier heli-hike, but as the other respondents have said, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. It's easily a 5-6hr drive one-way, and could potentially be slower depending on the traffic that day. It's also a beautiful area, so can be fun to take your time and explore some of the smaller towns, etc, so would recommend staying over at least 1 night (and maybe 2!) in Fox Glacier. We stayed at the Westhaven motel right on the main st. in Fox Glacier - not fancy, but also not expensive & very clean & comfortable. Have fun!
