We drove to the parking on the south side of the valley and took the short walk to the viewing area. However, the actual glacier is still a long way further up the valley. Glad we saw it but I wouldn't rush back. Fill up...More

An easy track over a well maintained gravel path. A steep incline towards the end of the track which takes you to the viewing platform. Took us about 45 minutes return, including stopping for photos and sightseeing. Ensure you take the Glacier Access road, and...More

We were disappointed that we really couldn't see much of the actual glacier, just primarily the melt water was visible. Having visited other glaciers in other locales where a clear sight of the glacial wall was visible, this was a big letdown. If we could...More

We did the short 1hr return trip to view the Fox Glacier, it was very fresh and well worth the trek. Be prepared to have layers to take off and put back on as it get colder and you will warmer as you climb to...More

The Glacier has receded so much that there is not much to see. However, the walk to get closer is quite interesting and is a good way to get some exercise.

we decided to have a trip up the fox glacier, there are many operators in fox doing tours, we picked one that flew us up onto the glacier and we had a two hour walk around, with our guide who pointed out various points of...More

Somewhat barren but still awe-inspiring, with Prometheus-esque feel. This short walk may not offer the "wow" snowy scene you expected, but gives an idea of what Glacier environment is really like. The icy plants were beautiful.

Fox glacier we saw was a victim of a recent landslide hence covered in dirt. I enjoyed the walk up to the glacier view point. It was a relatively easy walk over a rocky path with small streams flowing across. I enjoyed it. I am...More

From the car park, it's a bit of a walk along the Glacier Valley to reach the terminal face of the Glacier, but we'll worth it. Be sure as you drive in to take note of where the Glacier once reached down the Valley, as...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Hi, we are planning to stay in glacier 2 night, likely fox glacier. Have a few questions. Since we are arriving by bus, we dont have flexibility of driving down to other glacier and points. We want to cover the walks to fox and franz joseph and lake mathesan. Is it possible to do all these without taking a guided tour (we are of normal fitness and in early 30's) if yes - are there any shuttles or public transport running between fox and franz joseph and lake mathesan which we can use? What are best times to view each of these assuming we arrive at 320pm at fox glacier on first day and have full day free the next day? Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi it's a 5km flat walk to Matheson Lake then 4.2 km around the lake. The restaurant at the lake is fabulous. We did both glaciers but if you just did Fox that would be fine. There is an excellent viewing point on the other... More
