It is a good strenuous hike to get from the car park up to the viewing area of the glacier. The view of the canyon walls and river on the way up are quite amazing. Be sure to wear good shoes, at least runners if not hiking shoes. We saw some people incredibly wearing sandals and even barefoot! It is... More

This glacier has receeded so far it is almost inaccessible. Theres a drive off the road to the carpark which was chocker. Once there you still have quite a hike to the glacier itself. The day we went it was at least 45 mins each way and since it was late in the day we decided not to start. You... More

You can get closer to Fox than Franz Josef. Beautiful trail. Great walk for families. Less crowded than Franz Josef.

If you have to choose between 2 glaciers, choose Franz Jozef. The hike towards the Glacier is better (beautiful rocks, trees, mountains, etc). Fox is a grey area with only rocks. And there isn't much left of the Glacier because of global warming. Too bad really....

Glacier can be observed on a one hour return walk from a car park close to Fox Glacier Village. Beautiful scenery! If you want to walk on the glacier, you will have to do an expensive helihike (around 400 NZD).

Interesting walk with waterfalls and creeks and lots of photo opportunities. Last part of the walk is up a steep incline but worth the effort to get within 450 metres of the face of the Glacier. Lucky to see some of the snow capped mountains in the distance as the clouds cleared.

The wheater and the conditions where perfect this day for a walk to the viewpoint infront of the glacier We also walked thru the rainforest to another viewpoint, it goes a bridge over the bridge to a path in the forest Can really recommend it also A little bit disappointed when I visited the toilets beside the parkingplace, they where... We visited both Frabs Joseph and Fox Glaciers. I would not say one is better as they are different. We enjoyed the walk into Fox but it was a little rainy, but then it is a glacier. Nature is awesome.

Access was limited due to an avalanche prior to our visit. It was beautiful to see none the less from the vantage we were permitted. After the trek down to see and take some pictures we headed back to the parking area and had a picnic lunch. I think we lingered too long there and frankly there were other areas... More

The glacier has now retreated quite a long way. It's currently an hour (return) walk and a very steep climb at the end. Any able person can make the climb but be warned its no walk in the park
