The Fox Glacier is a wonder in itself, but you will get a much better view on foot. Remember to take some water and something with a little energy kick, like chocolate. And take care, the weather can change very quickly.

We took the valley walk on a sunny day. Bring plenty of drinking water and wear a hat. Wear good hiking shoes as there are lots of loose gravel. The final ascent to the view point has a fairly steep gradient, but not too difficult...More

Fox Glacier is an interesting little rocky walk. As it gets towards the end - meaning you are within 450m of the glacier -the walk goes uphill a bit. Be prepared, wear good walking or sport shoes, not thongs, high heels or sandals... like what...More

We did the walk to the glacier - approx 1 hour return from car park. Great views along the valley floor of the stream, waterfalls and valley walls. There is a reasonably steep section at the end of the walk but manageable with kids.

We took this walk after our Heli - hike was cancelled due to changing weather. The weather had changed for the better within an hour or so and it was a warm walk through the amazing wide creek alongside the river and between soaring cliffs....More

The hiking around Mt Cook is kind of a choose your own adventure. You can make it easy, by sticking to the boardwalk with most of the tourists. It's a flat, mostly walk, that is very crowded but pretty. Or you can make it challenging...More

There is ample parking and adequate toilet facilities at the trail head. The trails are excellent and well marked. I wouldn't call the trail wheelchair accessible unless there is some sort of off-road wheelchair. The final approach to the glacier wall is a long continuous...More

You can get closer to this glacier than Franz Joseph. Much of the glacier is covered in dirt so look closely for the head of the glacier. It's a fairly easy hike up and it is pretty. A blue sky helps contrast the gray glacier...More

The hike up to the lookout to see Fox Glacier was maybe the best hike I've ever taken in my life. Part of the allure was that it was pouring rain and since the hike is through the valley cut by the glacier and there...More

At 260 pounds and 66 years old, I am the perfect person to respond to your question. Leave the crampons in the car. The trails, as are all the trails we walked throughout New Zealand, are excellent. The walk up to the... More
