All reviews car park franz josef valley walk great hike steep climb valley floor viewing platform guided tour well worth the effort stepping stones rock falls nice walk hour hike helicopter ride glacier fox weather
It takes you longer to get to the viewing platform than commented in the guides (1,5 hrs not 40 min). The trail is not interesting (only some views of the valley), has a lot of ups and downs and the final result is not worthed:...More
If you are young and in good physical health with a couple hours to kill, just go for it, at least you could say you made it, but be warned that the view isn't as spectacular as the glacier has retreated so much so that...More
Although it is stated to be a quicker walk to Fox vs Franz and you do get slightly closer, the walk is definitely not easier. There are several quiet steep parts on the current iteration of the trail to the view point. Keep up to...More
Perhaps other reviewers have also compared these two very beautiful national parks, since they are not very far from each other and they are similar in some ways, not only because they feature glaciers. Some of the tourist companies offer guided tours, although my wife...More
The hike in was great, The weather held off and we really enjoyed the walk. The last 400 metres is really UPHILL and will test your resolve to reach the viewing area but we all made it You cannot get really close to the Glacier...More
Good walk today - did not get wet at the river crossings.
Found a multi coloured beanie at the viewing area around 1pm. Have brought it done and left it on a high traffic cone at the start of the walk next to the carpark.
The walk up to Fox Glacier is much shorter than Franz Josef, but it is a much steeper walk. The scenery on the lead up to the glacier is mainly rocks, and the path is extremely rocky and steep in some bits. Make sure you...More
Although it was great to see Fox Glacier on this walk, be aware that you cant get very close and you can only see the face of the glacier. I enjoyed the whole valley walk as much as seeing the glacier so to me the...More
Amazing scenery on the hike. It's labelled as easy 1 hour return, but it's not. Most is uneven rocky ground up and down steep hills. The last leg of the hike is a really steep hill. Finally get the end that is barricaded off but...More

At 260 pounds and 66 years old, I am the perfect person to respond to your question. Leave the crampons in the car. The trails, as are all the trails we walked throughout New Zealand, are excellent. The walk up to the viewing area is a steady climb that definitely got my heart beating. We were there in October so it was chilly when we started. Be careful to dress in layers so you can strip down as your body heats up on the long climb up. You don't want to be sweaty and wet on the way back to the car. Start taking photos when you are a mile away from the glacier face. Once you are standing on the viewing area, it is hard to comprehend the sheer size. Enjoy! It was one of the highlights of our three weeks in country.
