A short drive after turning off Highway 6 at Gowanbridge brought us to beautiful Lake Rotoroa with its calm waters and stunning scenery. The sandflies were a bit ferocious but the view was well worth the detour.

Stunning spot at St Arnaud: rocky "beach"; sandfly mecca but crystal clear water and stunning view. Insta-famous jetty at Kerr Bay; also West Bay (not as pretty). Take the time to do the walks in the area, particularly the Mt Robert (full day walk with outstanding views back to the lake) circuit.

We did the Braeburn Loop to the waterfall and it was a lovely hours walk. I couldn’t find a single picture of the waterfall so here are some! Not too steep and clearly accesible.

Picturesque lake. As others have said, watch out for sandflies, but this is true of any similar location on the south island.

Lovely lake, with great views and great reflections but just watch out for sand flies that try and eat you alive, as the sun is setting!

This is one of our most favourite places in the world. One of two lakes in the Nelson Lakes region, this is a great place for families, couples or individuals. There are plenty of activities to do there with fishing and tramping high on the list! There are two huts at the top of the lake, the D’urville and the Sabine. A water taxi is available to get up to the huts. There is plenty of trout in the lake for those keen on trout fishing and hunting is allowed in the area. You will need fishing permits if you want to try bagging yourself a trout though. There is also accommodation forcamping to house lets. Just be prepared for sand Flies! Cover up and get good insect repellent.

We visited here as a large group and set up pir picnic area on the lake front. The idea was to have lunch, play some cricket, swim in the lake, try catch a fish and walk around the small loop track there. We managed all except for the fish, swatted a few thousand sand flies and had a great time. The area was tidy and well maintained by the Department of Conversation rangers. Take insect repellent when you go during summer months.

If you want to get away from civilization, then this could be the place to go. As the start point for alpine trips, you need to arrange boat to far end of lake.
