Stunning Beach!
Jan 2021
Stunning Beach! We were up for a bit of paddle boarding so decided to check out the far end of Omaha Drive. The water was incredibly clear and for a school holiday period it was rater quiet up this end. I love the waves further down but this is a lovely spot to explore too!

Best beach!
Dec 2020 • Couples
One of the best beaches close to Auckland CBD with lovely sand and gently sloping for great swimming, walking or picnics. The water is clean and warm over summer and there is plenty of uncrowded beach for all.
With a bird reserve at the northern end and a great golf club on the estuary side there is something for everyone.
A dairy and cafe makes it easy to go for the day.

Pearly white beach

Pearly white sand fantastic beach to surf swim or relax with family on . If you like walking it’s a great long walk along the wide sandy beach . Breath taking views of the super rich houses along the for shore .

Best beach!
Feb 2020 • Couples
An easy one hour drive from Auckland CBD with lots to see along the way!

Look out for Matakana, or the Sculptureum or Morris and James pottery or multiple wineries and make a day of it!

Omaha has to be one of the best beaches with lovely white sand and crystal clear water. Linked to the mainland by a two lane bridge across the estuary it stands out as an extraordinary destination in its own right.

An all tide boat ramp and a wonderful 18 hole golf course give holiday makers lots to do.

A general store, for supplies or a cafe for lunch makes things easy too.

I highly recommend this beach to all visitors to Auckland who want to get out of town but still want some activities.

Good facilities, bathrooms and outdoor shower to rinse off. Very small parking area near the bathrooms. Nice white sandy beach.

Great beach - bring shelter, shade, and preferably a small tank or other tracked vehicle
Jan 2020 • Family
With the effort put into Omaha’s posh-but-not-my-main-home streetscapes, it’s a pity the investment stopped before the beach. The cafe looks inviting but must be operated by a keen surfer as it closes at 2.30pm, while a well-stocked superette next door maintains a small queue just for the fun of it. There is also a beach attire museum or possibly part time shop that may be open from time to time.

Best to bring your own, then, but there’s the rub. The beach accessway desperately needs a boardwalk à la Mt Maunganui, and is quite a workout especially for the well-equipped. Any type of wheeled trolly is also out of the question, at least without a ski attachment.

The council has a couple of BBQs in the carpark reserve that are shaded at lunchtime but are practically solar-powered in the afternoons, so again, bring an umbrella at the very least. We observed several people using beach umbrellas at Omaha, all pushed square into the sand instead of into the wind (asking for a stabbing in a gust) and thankfully all remained in place. In a good breeze a synthetic shelter works well, but of course it will be too hot during summer in light winds due to the greenhouse effect.

The waves are great for all boogie boarding levels and come in frequently but we didn’t see anyone manage to ride a surfboard standing up as it was too calm.

The beach is very long but the section between the flags is very narrow, making it quite difficult to stay safe in body board traffic, or conversely to find a lane when catching waves. One tourist next to our spot on the beach went on a rant about how it was so overcrowded that it reminded him of Barcelona and made him want to puke, etc., etc., and we were most grateful that the end effect on him was that he left and that gave us some more space.

Excellent bird watching
Dec 2019 • Family
Drive out to the end of the spit at high tide and be amazed at the number of different shore birds. Lots of NZ dotterel and oystercatchers. Also a good sized flick of godwits are all likely to be roosting there. Take your time and take care to stay out of fenced areas, but really good bird watching and it's free.

Lovely, fine grained sand beach
Nov 2019
I visited Omaha Beach while scoping out the course for the half marathon event held there recently. The beach is a truly lovely place with plenty of parking available nearby during the week. The surf is very gentle being in a sheltered bay. The only negative is you have to drive back through the Warkworth interchange which at peak times can be delayed by the lack of a well thought out road system.
