First stop on our 4 week tour.....think we stayed 3 days and nights. Freedom camped close to the beach. Great spot. Will definitely be returning.

To be honest, we were really underwhelmed. We are used to Doc campgrounds but this was very basic. Long drop - super smelly. No showers.
The beach was nice and the walk to the beach enjoyable. The check in staff member was not very friendly and definitely gave the vibe that we weren't their kind of people. Oh well, we left the next morning and went to Doc run Uretiti campground instead. Great facilites and super friendly.

Busy during Summer, beautiful beaches with nice surroundings. Make sure you pack lunch - Katakana and surrounding areas are expensive and not much to choose from eating wise. Make sure you drive right down to Anchor bay for a sandy beach. The rocky area before Anchor bay is stunning, next time, I will bring my snorkel.

The ideal getaway if you're in Auckland and perhaps in a lockdown :)
This place is just an hour and a half drive away and is the ideal getaway. You're entering a nature reserve that has rare indigenous birdlife, some excellent camp sites right next to the most gorgeous beach and hiking trails for everyone. From personal experience I can also tell this is not bad place to take a date to.

Looks amazing here - Can't wait to go back and explore the trails. Awesome drive in for those that don't mind the undulating hill roads.

Just 85km north of Auckland’s CBD find this beautiful predator free regional park. Several beaches to choose from for the day tripper swimmer, surfer, sun lover or various walks around the peninsula.
We enjoyed a great walk on the well pathed Ecology Trail, great native bird life, fauna and forest. Amongst the usuals we saw, Saddle Backs and Bellbirds. On arriving at the top of the forested trail if the tide is low you can drop down through the farmland to the coast and return to the beach / carpark via the beautiful coastline and its rocky outcrops dynamic in colour and design. A great public facility.

We drove out to the park not knowing what to expect. Entry is free and you can drive through most of the park to almost the end of the pensinsula. There are good walks, and a variety of native birds.
The Tawhananui Open Sanctuary Society Incorporated (TOSSI) have done a great job!
A great picnic spot .
Recommended.

Gorgeous beach and was a great spot for a wintry walk. When you arrive, keep driving right to the end of the road so you end up in the main car park. Only mentioning as when you 1st arrive, there are a couple if small bays but they’re not the main attraction!

I come here multiple times when I'm back home in NZ. I have worked out an approx 10km run I do which starts at the Anchor Bay car park along the beach, cutting back through the protected forrest and along the southern coast out to Takatu Point and back to Anchore Bay. The views are stunning and different landscape and scenery keeps it so interesting. Anchor Bay is great for a swim afterwards.

Can't wait to head back there.
