Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful scenery, but no beach. It is all rocks. Perfect snorkel place but hard to get down onto and no beach at all.

A short hop of the main track to Cathedral Cove just like the side track to Stingray Bay. A rocky foreshore, clear water, views of the cliffs and a good spot to get into the water for snorkelling.

The first time we visited, it was really choppy but we were all so excited. We hopped in the water and didn't see a thing. The visibility was terrible. We came back on a better day and it was utterly beautiful. We could see perfectly and there were huge snapper EVERYWHERE. They were so friendly, not scared of us and swam around without a care. I regularly visit Hahei and I always snorkel at gemstone bay at least once. There are stacks of stingrays there too, you just have to be patient. I would recommend bringing footwear because the beach is very rocky and it can be tough on your feet. Also visit on a calm day for a better experience. Accessing the water can sometimes be tricky because there are so many rocks, you may want a wet suit if you get cold easily. Overall I would very highly recommend Gemstone bay, the scenery is gorgeous if you aren't a swimmer and the snorkelling is exceptional, definitely worth the trip.

Lovely little bay which we visited when we realised we wouldn't get to Cathedral COve before sunset. You can get to this cove in about 15 minutes walk from the carpark. Lots of signs were suggesting this would be a great area to go snorkling but sadly we didn't know this before arriving! As we went through the town the next day, we saw lots of shops with snorkelling gear available for hire so I would recommend doing this if you come along with more time than we did! Great views and photography opportunities even if you don't go snorkelling though.

Gemstone Bay is one of several small beaches in the Te Whanganui A Hei Marine Reserve, it can be reached via a pathway leading off the main sealed pathway to Cathedral Cove, roughly a ten minute walk from the Lookout at Grange Road Carpark. A place of great tranquility and beauty.

As an option to joining the crowds at Cathedral Cove, you may want to slip by there, take a selfie, then come back to either Sting Ray or Gemstone cove. Gemstone has a snorkel trail that I didn't try, but others I know saw a variety of fish including a stingray there. The place is beautiful, and you will likely have it nearly to yourself.

The snorkeling was a bit murky. I think there had been some rough weather lately and that had stirred everything up. Did see a Sting Ray and some Moamoa fish. Will have to return on a better day (sunnier) to see if that improves.

Be aware this is a stony beach, so you are wise to have footwear to get down into the water, e.g. snorkeling shoes.
