We have a car so we drove to the summit to realise that the car park is not in operation during the high season .we parked in the front yard of one of the residencies and they charged us $10 to park. From there was a short walk to the start of the walk to the cathedral Cove. If you decide to take the shuttle from the village the shuttle is $5 a person return. We arrived at the beginning of the hike at 8:30 in the morning and it took us about 30 minutes to reach Cathedral Cove. We did not find the hike very difficult. When we arrived at Cathedral Cove there were very few people there which was excellent. We stayed for about a hour and half which at that point the tours and water taxi people started to show up so the beach got busier. there were also a lot of people heading down the path as we were heading back to her car. so I recommend you go early in the morning with possible and park at one of the local residents is along the way.

Definitely worth the visit. You can no longer park the the top, and instead are encouraged to take a shuttle from hahei ($5 per adult)

We parked in Hahei and walked up- took maybe 20 mins. If you have a good fitness level it’s not a bad option. We would recommend going earlier in the day to avoid the crowds, especially up and down the path.

Really stunning, and interesting walk. Absolutely worthy of the hype around it.

We did the walk to the beach which does take over an hour and has some pretty steep climbs. Once at the beach we were not disappointed. It’s a nature marvel. Water was chilly but we enjoyed it anyway. We opted to take the taxi back which is $15per adult and $10 per child which I thought was pricey given it’s only about 5 min. Most of the walk is paved so it’s not difficult, just hilly and it was a hot hot day. This is a must do.

We went in the afternoon, around 4pm. Maybe it’s better to go early in the morning or late in the evening, or at winter. On a summer afternoon it is way too crowded to be enjoyable.

Parking during summer 8s a mess, as they have closed off the closest parking. We payed 10 NZD to park in some guys garden in order to not have to walk several km to the start of the track. Afterwards I heard there is a shuttle, maybe that would have been better.

The track is pretty strenuous and takes about 30-40 mins one way. Then you get down to the overcrowded beach, and then you have to go all the way back up again.

Nah, there’s better ways to spend your time at the Coromandel.

What a gorgeous place. The walk requires minimum fitness but if you cant do stairs you wont be able to go.
The walk was scenic and long, about 45 mins, but the end result is simply stunning. The water was crystal clear and so refreshing after the walk in the sun. Lots of shady spots to choose from to get out of the sun.
Only down side was the toilet but hey it's kind of off the grid so cant expect much more.
Amazing time had by my partner and I.

We parked the car at the carpark and took the bus to the start of the walk. Bring a large waterbottle in a small backpack and something to eat, a towel and swimwear. On a Sunny Day IT is wonderful go for a swim once you have reached the cove. The beautiful walk to cathedral cove takes about 45 min. The views are spectaculair (like in a lot of places in this amazing country) and 45 min.back. IT is rather hilly parts up and down, both ways. Don't wear flipflops but sneakers or comfortable sandals.

Beautiful incredibly busy. Water taxi makes it accessible for those who would find the walk difficult. I would recommend taking very young children on the water taxi as there were quite a few families with children who were finding the walk hard work.

My wife and I decided we would do the shorter walk not from Hahei, but via the Cathedral Cove Gateway Trail from Lees Road carpark. There is a $10 payment via the honesty box or via internet bank transfer option to use this gravel track which is mostly flat but a lot shorter at about 30 mins vs the 75 mins apparently from Hahei. This path joins the main one just before the descent. The walk down from here and subsequent return journey end/start with around 100 steps down the last part of the cliff which may test those who are unfit.
The beach at the bottom is well known for the large rock arch that has been formed over time and is much photographed. An easier way to view this may be via one of the boats that tour the cove.
It was worth the stop and a good walk but even at this time of year was popular and getting an 'uninterrupted' photo tricky.

This was a nice walk. A little bit more strenuous than advertised but perfectly manageable. There is paid parking available at the entrance but a lot of people parked at the bottom and walked up the hill. Stunning views and the cove itself was lovely even in winter. Still a popular spot in July but I did get a few photos with no people in them :-)

This review is mainly for the Hahei shuttle bus which takes you to the top of the road, to the start if the walkway.
Gary our Irish bus driver made the short trip pleasant and informative. He is very accommodating and because we were the only ones on the van coming back, he dropped us of at the main beach.
The bus (or van for smaller numbers) is $7 return trip and runs frequently throughout the day. It is worth paying for the trip as you don't want to be walking up steep road way in the heat of summer.
In the winter months you can drive up and park your car in the top car park but you will still need to pay $15 to park there.
I think the shuttle bus is a great idea and you are helping the local economy. 😉
