A beautiful day to explore this really historic place. We loved to discover the quartz headstone of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and a bit of history for our kids

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is a traditionally old New England style cemetery. There are large and ornate headstones everywhere. But what makes this place interesting, is that it has an "Author's Area" where Thoreau, Alcott, Emerson and Hawthorne are buried. All their families are buried with them. It is somber to think about how short the lives of some of these individuals were, some only living into their mid 30's. The cemetery is beautiful and certainly causes one to reflect upon the brevity of life and how all will end up one day in the same place: the grave. Still, a very interesting place to visit and thankful we got the chance to do so.

One of the best preserved early American cemeteries, this beautiful pristine cemetery is better known for "Author's Ridge." On Author's Ridge, you'll see the final resting places of Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, Nathanial Hawthorne, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, all within a short distance away from each other. There are many other notable sites here, but most come to pay homage to the greatest of authors in American Literature.

If you like historic cemeteries you will thoroughly enjoy Sleepy Hollow. If you enjoy American literature you will find Author's Ridge quite fascinating. Here are the family plots of the Alcotts, Emersons, Hawthornes, and Thoreaus. Rather steep climb but with a solid handrail to assist.

We enjoyed walking through authors row with the pups. Interesting history throughout the cemetery! Even the graces of non famous people were intriguing to look at and it was a nice walk even though quite a chilly day!
