Excellent Guided Visit
Jul 2019 • Couples
1hr free guided tour in Spanish. Luckily I speak Spanish, but I would say it is well worth the visit even if you do not speak Spanish. The guides are very helpful and have lots of interesting information. Maybe a translated information sheet in English , French, Italian and German would be useful? The group starts upstairs in the Museum with a nice video showing the old factory, boats loaded with cases of cider, etc. Then the group moves down to the Museum, where you can see how the founders marketed their cider in the USA, Mexico, Cuba, and eventually around the world. The superior quality of the Gaitero ciders, the excellent pricing structure and the marketing are the key points here. Next the group gets taken around the old and new processing route, from the apples entering the factory by the river, to the pressing, filtering and bottling. The enormous old 20,000L barrels are incredile, but the room full of (apx.) 260,000 litre silos is eye opening! I think they filter 18,000 litres per day. Finally, a visit to the product display, a free glass of cool cider and the option to visit a small Gaitero shop. We bought a case of cider, and some nice glasses to take home. Afterwards we went to the other side of the river, visited the free wild bird centre, then sat by the river drinking cider :)

El Gaitero cider. The taste of Asturias
May 2019 • Couples
El Gaitero cider factory tour was very enjoyable. Visitors are guided through the entire locale and the guides share the rich history of the factory as well as interesting facts about production and export of this tasty Asturian drink.
Throughout the entire tour, you will see all sorts of memorabilia and mechanical implements that were utilized in the production and promotion of the product. The walk through the bodega is truly impressive and the complimentary tasting at the end of the tour is the icing on the cake. To make the visit more enjoyable, familiarize yourself with old videos of the factory. One such video is a silent turn of the century movie titled Bellezas de Asturias. Hope your visit is as pleasurable as it was for our party.

essential part of villaviciosa culture

Since we had followed the "apple" walk around the delightful old part of this charming town we thought we must also see the cider factory which has been so much a part of its history. We tried to book online for the 10.45 Monday tour but the website failed us so we pitched up anyway and there were just 4 of us - two Spanish and ourselves who understand little Spanish. But that didn't matter we thoroughly enjoyed the 90 minute visit anyway. Our first guide shared her time between the two couples, explaining to us quite a bit of the history in English in the museum before showing us all a film - in Spanish but enjoyable for all that. The tour of the factory itself was harder to follow as the new guide seemingly spoke no English - certainly more or less ignored us - but we could work out for ourselves quite a bit of the process and it was very interesting to see the old and the new processes and to go to the wharfside on the estuary for lovely views. The tasting at the end was generous and the cider was superb - and we were shown an English video while we sipped - a nice touch. Then we were allowed back into the museum to view on our own - some fascinating exhibits. So in spite of the language barrier it was still a very good experience.
I suspect best to book especially at peak season and at busier times - and there are specific tour guide times on the website. We were lucky.

Thank you for your opinion. Only one of our cifery guides can attend in English, so we recommend the previous reservation. If in the reservation you tell us that you speak English we can organize it properly. We hope that with the final video you could have been satisfied.

Must see
Jul 2018 • Family
It’s advisable to book in advance by internet. Very enjoyable tour of about 90 minutes which gives a good impression of the companies history. The guide could see that we were not Spanish, so she checked if we could understand everything and if we needed any explanation in English. Since we can all speak Spanish this wasn’t necessary, but still very attentive. The tour ends with a tasting, and don’t forget to visit the on site shop to pick up some bottle of delicious cider. For the young ones they have a natural apple juice they can taste.

Enjoyable Tour
Aug 2017
We booked the tour via email the day before. We had a speedy reply in English and were assured that even though the tour was in Spanish an attempt would be made before hand to give us an overview. The factory was easily found just outside the town and we were one of around 20 taking the tour. It last around 90 minutes and was really enjoyable. My husband is fluent in Spanish but neither myself or the kids have much grasp of the language. We still really enjoyed the tour. The staff were all very friendly and. It was quite apparent what was happening on each section even with very limited Spanish. The tour was free and we even had a tasting at the end. A must if your in the area.

Famous cider company with awesome premises
Jul 2017 • Couples
El Gaitero is situated on the river side, north of Villaviciosa. It takes a bit of a walk to get out there, so going by bus or car may be a good idea, but it is manageable on foot.

The guard at the gate was helpful, he didn't prevent us from entering, even though we hadn't booked.

The first guide showed us and a group of about 15 Spanish people around the museum, translating as much as she could of the tour into English for us. Their is clearly a lot of interesting history behind the company, from the name and logo, to the family of Indianos who founded their company on the riverside, so that the boats could take the cider out to sea, and from there, out all round the world to be sold.

In particular, El Gaitero made its name in South America as a Champagne-style carbonated cider. The latter half of the tour takes you round the main parts of the site, including the old chestnut barrels, which were used to age the cider. There is a room of giant barrels dedicated to the Spanish regions, then the next one is dedicated to the Latin American countries. The aromas in the rooms was incredible, and rivaled the heavenly scent of the sherry bodegas in Andalucia that we visited last year!

At the end of the tour, there was a tasting of their different brands. El Gaitero is quite an accessible cider, so this tour should appeal to just about anyone.

Great visit
Oct 2016 • Couples
We had a great time visiting el gaitero. The people were very accommodating for our complete lack of spanish and translated for us whilst on the tour. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit with a nice tasting at the end, would definitely recommend. We emailed ahead and this is probably advisable as we had turned up a few days earlier only to find it was closed.

Lovely friendly staff
Aug 2015 • Couples
My wife and I were visiting the area and stopped in to see if they did in any tours in English. On arrival we were directed my the gate man to the museum where we were greeted by a very pleasant member of staff who informed us that there were no tours in English. However she then explained the history of the company to us in perfect English and encouraged us to have a look around the museum. She then went and got another member of staff who explained the whole processing procedure for the sidra to us again in perfect English and we then followed a tour around. I would give the company and the staff that we came into contact with 10 out of 10 for the way that they went out if their way to make our experience so enjoyable. At then end of the tour we also sampled a glass of Sidra and before leaving we bought a couple of bottles from the on-site shop.
