About
The Cantina Raina is a boutique winery nestled into the rolling slopes of the beautiful Montefalco countryside. The owner Francesco is a renowned winemaker and chef, making some excellent wine with the local prized grape sagrantino. You can visit the winery - an incredible and indulgent day - where he unveils the beauty and pleasures of his winery, vineyard and wine. He guides you as you stroll the property - from the ancient restored farmhouse to the magnificent sagrantino vines, from the tasting room to the cellar - trying different wines as you go and pairing each wine with a local delicacy prepared by his expert hands. It's a fantastic and exclusive experience for wine buffs and food lovers, as well as a great way to immerse yourself in the stunning local landscape. The Cantina Raina is also open for casual tastings and wine sales.

Cooking lesson and wine testing
Nov 2016 • Friends
The first time i tasted the wine of "Raina" was in a restaurant in Terni, i loved it, and after searching the internet, i found out that cooking classes are also held at the winery with Francesco Mariani. At the cooking class we were 3 friends, who love good italian food and wine, and we found it all at Raina. for our request, the class was a vegetarian.
The class and lunch were great, we cooked 4 dishes, to each of which, Francesco match the right wine. Francesco explained everything patiently, and gave cooking tips.
I highly recommend the place, and intend to come back again, this time with my husband.

Raina Winery visit with Francesco
Aug 2016 • Friends
We had a fantastic time with Francesco, he cooked for us a fantastic truffles dish and shared with us his amazing food knowledge! All was accompanied with the finest wine you can find in Umbria which he grows with passion in his splendid Raina vineyard! I can't really forget his Trebbiano!

Cooking lesson
Jul 2016 • Family
We had a cooking lesson and wine tasting with Francesco and our children (8 and 12). It was the highlight of our time in Umbria!!! We made three courses each of which utilized only fresh and organic ingredients. Francesco was informative, sweet and a wonderful instructor. Even our kids got in on the cooking! We loved every dish and it was by far the best chicken cacciatore we've ever had. We also enjoyed a wine tour and several wines with our lunch. The Montefalco Rosso was the best we had in the region! If you love Italian food and wine this is a great way to experience Umbria. And we also found it a better value for a private lesson than anywhere in Tuscany. Thank you for everything Francesco! We will remember this day always.

Excellent small winery
May 2016 • Friends
We have tasted a lot of Montefalco wines and found the full range of wines here quite excellent! We were a bit late for our wine tasting time, but Francesco still took a moment to introduce us to his selection. Overall, we were very pleased and decided to order 6 bottles to be shipped to us in Holland. Francesco arranged the shipment quite speedily and we have really enjoyed the wine we ordered. We will definitely be back for more!! Thank you, Raína!!

Wonderful Umbrian Wine/Food Experience
Oct 2015 • Couples
Please read previous reviews (at least the ones in English) as they are all very accurate as are the pictures. Our group of 2 couples had the opportunity to cook with Francesco and experience his great food and wine knowledge. We spent the day in the kitchen learning how to make and then enjoy 3 local dishes pared with Raina wines.

We then toured the winery and learned about his all organic winemaking process. It doesn't get much better than this. He is a warm, personable and quite charming host. It was my birthday and as a special gift he uncorked, from his personal cellar a 2007 Passito - a sweet wine made from Sangrantino grapes that have been dried and concentrated. What a birthday celebration!

If you want an unique, authentic gastronomic experience - this is it and should not be missed!

We liked the wines so much we ended up having several cases shipped back home and they just arrived. Thank you Francesco for a wonderful day.

Special vineyard, delicious food, superb owner!
Jul 2015 • Family
We booked a dinner and vineyard tour at Raina on the recommendation of our local friend and we are so glad we did. It was a pre-wedding dinner for 30 family and friends with exacting standards. Many of them are wine enthusiasts and foodies so we wanted to pick somewhere special. The owner, Francesco could not have provided a more perfect experience. He was warm and welcoming, catering to our guests' dietary requests - vegetarian, no gluten - and producing tasty alternatives. His tour of the vineyard gave us a great overview of the ecological techniques and unique processes followed at Raina. The dinner prepared for us was delicious and clearly a lot of thought had gone into it. Our wine connoisseurs friends bought a crate of red wine which we enjoyed for the rest of the week!

Personal touch in an Italian vineyard
Oct 2014 • Couples
Having gotten used to the big business tours of California vineyards, Raina was a special treat. Francesco gave us a private tour of his wine making operation and explained in detail how he started and grew his winery. We saw all phases of his operation once the grapes were picked. The tour ended with a wine tasting and some meats, cheeses and bread from local businesses. Francesco was a welcoming, informative host, and the wines and food were all delicious.
My only caveat is that this is not an easy place to find, even with a GPS, so be sure that you have Francesco's cell in the event that you get lost. For us getting lost was rather fun because so many locals gave us good directions.

Wonderful winery, lovely host
Jan 2014 • Friends
The winery was recommended by friends who live nearby and we were certainly glad they did! The setting is lovely and Francesco is a wonderful host who even welcomed us into his own kitchen for nibbles (all strictly local and delicious!) to go with his luscious wines. He knows his wines inside and out, and clearly loves what he does. The Sagrantino is outstanding and will age beautifully. And his Rosso di Montefalco is complex and intriguing.
Definitely worth a visit. I, for one, will be back!

One of the best days we've had
Feb 2014 • Couples
If you're the type of person who wants to experience visiting an italian vineyard and cookery lesson all in one with a relaxed but informative style then this is for you. We have just been to Montefalco and Cantina Raina owner Francesco picked us up as arranged from our hotel. Francesco is a really nice person and is very considerate and clearly passionate about his wines and his cooking. We had a great day here in the kitchen both watching and participating in the cooking of three great and varied courses which we later ate too! Francesco is clean, tidy and has an organised and uncomplicated way of cooking which is fun and conversational.

Cantina Raina is a really nice winery and the location is superb, picturesque, clean and friendly. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Cantina Raina to people who are excited about learning something whilst being put at ease. The wines by the way are superb and under no obligation I made a puchase at my own suggestion which we are looking forward to drinking on a special occasion. We had a lovely day on valentines day here and will remember it always!

A Commitment to Wine Excellence in Umbria
May 2013 • Family
Francesco Mariani's Raina Winery in the Montefalco area of Umbria showcases his rich knowledge of food and wine by offering delicious wine tastings with a small plate food pairing. This is an up and coming wine maker (currently producing 40,000 bottles per year, 4 varietals tasted) with a genuine respect for the land and the grapes. The winery operates using all natural, eco-friendly methods and the wines show this commitment to mother earth with clean, robust flavors. We especially enjoyed the unique, sweet red dessert wine (sold in 375 ml bottles which made for easy packing!!). Wine tours by appointment only (the property includes the wine maker's family residence). On-site restaurant space also available by appointment for groups as the wine maker is an exceptionally talented chef. We were charged a very reasonable 5 euro per person. A highly memorable experience and terrific end to our winery tour day. www.vini-raina.it.
