The stunning location, by the water, of the Basilica cathedral San Nicola Pellegrino, is unique and a must when traveling to Puglia!

While on a trip to Italy we visited Trani late in the afternoon and after walking the docks, walked nearby to the Cattedrale di Trani. We also went inside to see the beautiful interior.

This is a very old church...Interestingly enough the standing church is built on top of another church. The crypt is another chapel it appears. And it is huge and very clean and just full of history.

The Cathedral itself is beautiful from the outside. Inside is less special. However the crypt is beautiful with some very old frescoes.

We were staying next to the Cattedrale so we were passing it very day. The building from outside is very impressive and beautiful. The inside is nice but not overwhelming.

Mix of Apulian Romanesque, Ancient Roman, and Byzantine. The exterior has beautiful carved wall sculptures of animals, doors with story panels, and the interior crypt which holds the relics of San Nicola Pelligrino.

I think I read somewhere that this may be one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy. If so, I don't get it. Maybe I am missing something but the interior was quite simple yet peaceful. Of course with free entry you have nothing to...More

Yes, it is possible but You may inform Carthedral staff about it before visiting when booking. As I have known in some cases You may use only technical means that are provided by Cathedral.

I did not take a tour. I visited on my own, including the crypt. If you read up on the Cattedrale before your visit, that should be fine. It is a beautiful site, right on the water's edge. Buon viaggio, Cristina
