A lovely Romanic church with a baroque interior on a unique blue background. I found it a relaxing sanctuary from the market bustle. It is the real thing - a working parish church as opposed to a tourist trap, which makes its atmosphere even more appealing.

Situated in a picturesque square in the atmospheric old town, this impressive church came as a bit of a surprise. From the outside it looks relatively plain, but once inside you are hit by a huge amount of artwork and flamboyant design. There is literally no part of any surface that hasn’t been embellished, and although such a display of the church’s wealth was apt in times when they yielded significant political power, it can seem rather tasteless today and almost against any perceived Christian ethos of helping the poor etc.

From the artistry and opulence on display, the Chancel is by far the grandest with an incredibly ornate reredos with a large central painting and gold embellished walls curving along behind both sides of the altar. If you are interested in church artistry then this one is a must visit.

Typical European parish facing a square lined with bistros , caffès and ice-cream parlours. Wonderful place to idle the afternoon away under the platane trees .

Be polite and dont make your visit Sunday mornings during the market held around the church, and during their well attended service. You will see when it's OK. They open all the doors.
This is a lovely church, and during the past years they have done a lot of restoration work on the building, so it looks very nice, particularly from the plaza side.
Take your time and look thru the inside of the church. It has a lot to offer.

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Provence and early today we visited the lovely village of L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue.

Touring the old town - which, as the name suggests, is on an island surrounded by the River Sorgue - we soon arrived in the centre where La Collegiale Notre Dame des Anges dominates the main Square. It did not take long to venture inside and it was certainly far more impressive than either of us were expecting - indeed one of the best we have seen so far.

Well worth a visit - you won’t be disappointed!

Not really a hidden gem as it is in the centre of the town, but could be overlooked on a brief visit. The interior is very impressive and calming. Worth a visit on a hot summer's day as it is so cool inside.

The austere exterior of La Collegiale Notre Dame des Anges/Our Lady of Angels, belies what waits for the visitor inside. Baroque madness, despite it being over the top it is still very impressive. Listed as Monument Historique in 1911.

The structure has its roots in the 13th century, erected as a collegiate church under the title of "Notre-Dame-des-Anges" by the Bishop of Cavaillon in 1212 (title confirmed by Pope Honorius III in 1222), it is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. By the 15th century the church was in decline, it is thought restoration and building of the chevet and belltower started around the late 1400’s, by 1538 the bell tower was completed. A portion of the church collapsed in the mid 1600’s. Reconstruction takes place in the 1640’s under architect François Royers de la Valfrenière, with consecration in 1672. The exterior underwent restoration from 1994-2016.

The interior is in colours of blue with smatterings of gold everywhere. A total of 222 figures of angels accompany Mary into heaven, with another 33 figures representing the mystery of the Trinity. The altar piece is 15 metres high, with a 5 metre high 1680 painting by Reynaud le Vieux, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin.

The façade was part of Valfrenière’s reconstruction and measures 28 metres wide and 24.50 metres high, whatever bas-relief was in the tympanum has been destroyed. Higher up is a conventional clock and lunar clock, above these is the coat of arms of the town in bas-relief. Would love to know the age of the beautifully carved door.

Don’t forget to walk around the back, as there are some lovely gargoyles, (always a personal favourite) in excellent condition probably due to the recent restorations.
