I had a free day while on a motorcycle trip so I thought I’d revisit Seward.
It was interesting checking out all the boats in the harbor including the Viking cruise ship Orion. I also swung by the Seward Mariner’s Memorial on the waterfront. It’s a reminder that the sea can be an unforgiving place. There are plaques inside listing the names, vessels and sometimes small details of what happened.
The mountainous backdrop makes for a picturesque scene.
It worth a stroll and provides a break from crowded souvenir stores or something to do while waiting to go on a glacier cruise.

What is most interesting about this harbour is the landing of fish and the gutting of fish, very skilfully done to the rear of the buildings. Often you see this in the morning, but here the catches seemed to come in in the afternoon. Nice scenic pictures of boats and starting point for boat trips.

We took a cruise which departed out of Seward. Before we left, we visited the boat harbor. Seward's harbor is picturesque. The harbor sits at the end of a fjord, which is surrounded by tall mountains. The water is a beautiful blue color. Shops and restaurants line the waterfront. It's a very pretty spot and definitely worth visiting.

We enjoyed some time walking along the harbor before our tour of Kenai Fjord. We were there for several hours and enjoyed stopping in local shops in the area. We even saw a couple of otters hanging out on the dock!

Fun place to check out. Great boats, beautiful views. Its fun to watch the boats come in with there catch of the days. You are allowed to walk around to see everything. Its lined with a few places to eat and place to shop or take out tours. Great place to see and explore when you are in town

My wife and I stayed in Seward for 1 night at the Best Western Plus Edgewater Hotel during our escorted tour of Alaska with Titan Travel. Seward is located on the shores of Resurrection Bay and has a delightful harbour which I visited twice, late in the evening on my own and the following morning with my wife and the rest of our tour group.
I had the best of both worlds - the harbour practically all to myself in the evening and full of activity the next morning. It was calm, peaceful and beautiful in the twilight as I walked along the docks and the pontoons admiring the boats and cruisers of all shapes and sizes including pleasure and commercial vessels anchored for the night. It was magical and the magic was even better when three sea otters came into the harbour swimming playfully between the pontoons, ignoring my presence. I met two anglers, a mother and son, at the fish dock processing 12 sockeye salmon (reds) they'd caught that evening. I also visited the Seward Mariners' Memorial, celebrating Seward's maritime history and a fitting memorial to all those over the decades who have lost their lives at sea. There is also another memorial worth visiting, commemorating those who lost their lives in Seward in the Good Friday Earthquake of 27th March, 1964. The harbour also has a variety of interesting shops, stores and restaurants some of which I visited the following morning as they were closed at the time of my late evening walk around the harbour.
'Once in a Blue Moose' is typical of the interesting shops over looking the harbour which cater for tourists but the 'Bay Traders 'True Value' Hardware' store is in a league of their own! It's across the road from the harbour and is an 'Aladdin's Cave'! It has almost everything on miles of shelves including sailing and boat accessories, clothes for whatever the weather as well as fishing gear, knives and guns! A number of native wild animals are on display around the walls of the store but I'd become accustomed to such displays being a part of Alaska's heritage. Another visit to the Seward Mariners' Memorial with my wife in the bright morning sunlight was again a poignant experience and from there we could appreciate the size of the cruise ship, 'Seven Seas Mariner', anchored just outside Seward Harbour. The Kenai Fjords Visitor's Center also near the harbour looked like a place worth visiting but we didn’t have time to venture inside.
Our final visit before leaving Seward was to the Benny Benson Memorial Park just a short ride from the harbour. Here we saw the memorial to Benny Benson who aged 13 designed Alaska's flag in 1927 while living in Seward. We also saw the lagoon, an important park feature, as it's a key wildlife habitat especially for fish and birds. Our short visit unfortunately didn't allow us enough time to explore the lagoon in detail.
This picturesque and interesting harbour is well worth visiting on any visit to Seward and is a gateway to enjoy some of the attractions Seward has to offer.

This is a neat town & a must see! We live in Texas , and saved $ for 5 years to take off & come to Alaska for a few weeks. I read hundreds of reviews, bought a milepost to travel by. I am so glad we came here. You know there are only 9 main roads in AK & most travel happens in the summer time when folks can get around. The town was packed of course like any other vacation destination, but it didn't matter. The folks were nice and friendly, the scenery was so worth it. We bought our fishing licences downtown & walked around a few hours. The boats were of all shapes & sizes, just hidden in the majestic harbor. Even if the boat was rusty, or new or empty or loaded down, it all fit together here. The water was an evergreen like never seen before and we took many pictures. We did take the day excursion with Kenai Fjords boat & went to Fox Island. We had rain gear & it was a bit breezy. The lunch with salmon & crab was great & we enjoyed the tour hosts & information we learned about the ecosystem. During our travels we met many interesting people from here & around the world. .. We spent a lot of time walking around the harbor area, eating ice cream, drinking coffee, watching the fishermen returning and cleaning the fish they caught, and just taking in the breathtaking views. Seward in general is quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth, at least in my humble opinion.

Seaward Harbour is a lovely working harbour with a beautiful mountain back drop.
We had a strolled around before hopping on our wildlife cruise.
Make sure you visit "The Fish House" a very interesting shop which sells anything you would ever need.

When in Seward, don't forget to walk along the Small Boat Harbor. Here you will find restaurants and gift stores, tour companies and rental equipment companies. You will see the pleasure boat, the tour boats, the fishing boats, and across the way, a cruise ship if it is in port. You can watch fishermen weigh/display their catch and gut their fish. The best stop, however, was the Kenai Fjords Visiter's Center, where we watched almost the entire 2 hour loop of videos about the glaciers. It was shocking to see the then and now pictures of glaciers that are either completely gone or replaced with water and vegetation.

I am planning a trip to Seward next June. What time do the fishermen come back with their catch? Kash

I was there in June 15th of 2022.
Walking around, I saw the first "load of fish" around 6pm.
Later there was more people and more fish including big halibuts.
Best Regards.

When is the best time to observe the boats coming in to unload?
What is the best time of day/evening to see marine life?
Any other things I should know?
Written 15 July 2017
You should see plenty of activity all day since it is a busy harbor. Lunch to afternoon would be when I would plan to observe boating activity.
Marine life is mostly out in the bay (Resurrection Bay). Suggest taking a wildlife boat tour to view sea lions, puffins, whales, sea otters, bald eagles, and yes, even Orcas (we saw 3 in one visit).
Unless you arrive early, parking can be limited, so plan on parking at one of the paid lots and walking to the harbor. It's a nice walk and lots to see and do. If you book a tour with Kenai Fjords Tours, they will shuttle you from their parking lot for free.

What does it cost to ship fish from Seward back to Michigan? Any other way to do it? Probably doesn't go well as carry-on.
Written 28 November 2016
There is a place outside of Seward near Seavey's cabins. I can't think of the name of it or find it on the Internet, but I'm sure if you asked around someone can tell you. They processed my husbands fish at a fraction of the cost. They process and find out when you are leaving and they pack it in an ice chest and ship it to the airport where they have a storage unit, and then all you have to do is pick it up and pay baggage fees on it. It was a simple process and so much cheaper than anywhere we could find in town.
