Bike Trips for Governors Island
Aug 2021
Frequent visitor to Governors Island with my sons. We love to rent bikes or pedal cars from Blazing Saddles. Its a nice way to see the island, which has no car traffic, and get from point to point. Friendly, helpful staff. It helps to reach some of the attractions on the other side of the island, like the slides and lookout hill, which has great views of Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.

There's a lot of recreational space on Governors Island, but also a lot of history - had a lot of fun learning about the importance of this island for the city of New York.

We often go to Governors Island during the summer months
Nov 2019
We often go to Governors Island during the summer months and when we do, we prefer to ride around on tandems for two as well as the surreys if we are with another couple. The views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan are the best from here. (Note: the date shown here is not correct; summer months during 2019 were not available to be selected.)

Nice Afternoon Bike Ride
Sep 2020
Was looking for an easy way to get out of the city and enjoy the nice weather. The trip to the ferry at Battery Point was a medium bike ride from 48th and 3rd along the river. The ferry ride is cheap ($3) and was just a short ride but with a nice view. Picked up a Citibike at the ferry terminal and rode all the way around the island. There are a number of food venues/food trucks so you can get some interesting things to eat. Most things are not open due to Covid but it's still a nice green area with a lot of buildings left over from the military base days. Lots of folks renting bikes at Blazing Saddles as it's a great place to ride.

Perfect location for a picnic or a family outing
Sep 2020
It isn't as famous as central park, but just as amazing for a picnic or a family outing. The indoor attractions and guided tours were shut down due to the pandemic. Book tickets in advance if you are going during the weekends. Social distancing was a little tricky on the ferry, especially during the holiday weekends, but once you get to the island there is plenty of space to spread out. Rent a bike from the citibike stands in the island or the bike rental shop. This would be the best way to explore the island. The citibike stands get full towards the evening near the ferry docks, so you may have to bring the bike with you on the ferry and return it at the stand outside the ferry terminal in Manhattan (not sure about Brooklyn). The citibike stand at the far end of the island was empty though, so plan accordingly.

Food trucks are primarily around on just on the weekends (some on them on fridays as well), so options are limited if you come during the weekdays.

Exploring Governors Island
Oct 2019
Governors Island is a community unto itself where it was a former federal property of the US Government that is now a tourist site. Here, there is plenty of green space to relax and look at the city skyline of Manhattan offering breathtaking views. There are numerous walking paths to take in the surrounding scenery where one can see the now abandoned apartment buildings that housed federal employees in its heyday. As one continues to walk on this island, one sees Castle William (1807-11) that was built to protect New York against foreign invasion from the sea. There is also an abandoned theater, two churches, one of which has a belfry tower and a playing field for soccer.

Only 10 Minutes by Ferry, but a World Away from Manhattan.
Aug 2020
Only a 10-minute ferry ride from South Ferry to Governors Island, you'll find yourself in 120 acres of lush green lawns and gardens, seven miles of well-marked, car-free paths accommodating walkers, runners and bikers. Divided into 10 areas, we aimed our sights on The Hills, affording spectacular 360-degree views of Liberty, Ellis & Staten Island, Brooklyn, Jersey City and of course Manhattan's iconic skyline. Playgrounds, slides, hammocks, picnic tables and Adirondack chairs abound. Purchased from Native Americans by the Dutch in the mid-17th C., the island is home to the mid-19th C. Ft. Jay and Castle Williams as well as elegant housing for military officers on Colonels Row. Bring a picnic or visit a variety of food vendors. All dining is al fresco these days. As of this writing (8/2020) there were but a few dining options opened, so keep this in mind. Reservations are required (easily made on-line; Free for seniors) on the daily ferry which leaves every 40 minutes starting at 10:00 AM. The Governors Island ferry leaves from the terminal directly to the LEFT of the Staten Island Ferry where you can pick up a free detailed map of the island. The last ferry from Governors Island is at 6:15 PM (later on weekends). It's an oasis for all, easily accessible from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Quiet park, a little difficult to get to.

Quiet park, a little difficult to get to. Okay views of New York Harbour. I would prefer Jersey or Roosevelt Island which is more tranquil.

Lovely day on the island
Oct 2019 • Couples
It had been 33 years since I was last on Governors Island while stationed about the Coast Guard Cutter DALLAS. I enjoyed walking around and seeing how the US Park Service preserved this place which was very special to me. It’s a $3.00 ferry ride round trip over from South Ferry. Free for veterans and active duty. You can rent a variety of styles of bicycles to ride around the island or bring your own. No cars. There’s a bunch of food trucks with all types of food and a beautiful outside area to sit and enjoy your meal. There’s a section with just hammocks to relax it. They even do Glamping and your view is the Statue of Liberty. Can’t wait to take my family back to enjoy it
