I'm not sure why everyone raves about this island. I did not find it any different than Atlantic Beach and certainly not as nice as Ocracoke. Maybe if you are interested in the ponies it might be worth it, but I did not go for...More

This island is very nice but no shade and lots of walking to see a few wild horses. Shells were no better than our place at Pine Knoll Shores. Be sure to take plenty of water and wear comfy shoes for walking in the dunes.

Wow oh wow I cannot say enough good things about this place. So beautiful! We saw the ponies right away as we got off the boat on the island. Shelling was pretty good, lots of beautiful and large shells. But the best part was the...More

We went to Shackleford Banks for a family trip. We walked only a part of the island along the beach. So many shells. It was a very pleasant place to be; very peacful. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Most of us...More

Beautiful beach, calm water, soft sand. Great place for families and day trips. Thee is a bathroom but bring anything else you may want or need.

We were in this area for about 2 days, drove all around the island. The only bad thing was the weather, so we only got in about 3 good hours of no rain. Interesting beach and bay area with plenty of sight seeing places. We...More

We randomly decided to try this place out for the last ferry for an hour and were dying to have more time. Beautiful and breezy ferry ride (about 10-15 min). We went to the shell side since we were on a time crunch... I’ve never...More

This is a great family trip. I have four children ages 4 to 12. We came here on the first morning ferry on a weekday. The ferry was full and some people had to wait. I’d suggest to come early or make a reservation. The...More

This is a great place to visit with your family. Picnicking swimming or fishing. Even If you don’t have a boat you can pay to go across on a ferry and they will pick you back up from Harkers Island.

Enjoyed a few hours at Shackleford Banks photographing horses and walking along the beach. We took the first ferry over and enjoyed having the beach to ourselves for a few minutes. By the time we left, there were plenty of people around though it is...More

Backpacking stoves are permitted at your campsite -- as always use caution, remember that you are the fire department while you are on the island. Any open flame fire such as a campfire or bonfire must be built on the... More

You find conch shells everywhere, nowhere and rarely. We didn't find one. We said a single passenger on our ferry of about 100 found one. No one location routinely has more shells than others. Propelled by storms and tides... More

Yes, but in certain places the island has very strong currents that can easily pull a swimmer out to sea. If you ask the captain on the boat, he can point out the dangerous places, particularly on one side of the island. The... More
