Took the boat over from the National Park area . If you enjoy solitude and quiet spaces this is for you. The extra here are wild horses who quietly roam the island. If you enjoy looking for shells this is a place for you. But...More

There must have been about 100 private boats on the island so not much room for swimming. We took the ferry over and was nervous with kids swimming with all the private boats around. We left after about 2 hours after more boats came. Not...More

The shelling was dismal. The biting flies were horrendous. And at high tide there is ZERO beach to walk on. Highly recommend the shelling at the Cape instead and just viewing the wild horses via ferry as you sail by!

I'm not sure why everyone raves about this island. I did not find it any different than Atlantic Beach and certainly not as nice as Ocracoke. Maybe if you are interested in the ponies it might be worth it, but I did not go for...More

This island is very nice but no shade and lots of walking to see a few wild horses. Shells were no better than our place at Pine Knoll Shores. Be sure to take plenty of water and wear comfy shoes for walking in the dunes.

Wow oh wow I cannot say enough good things about this place. So beautiful! We saw the ponies right away as we got off the boat on the island. Shelling was pretty good, lots of beautiful and large shells. But the best part was the...More

We were in this area for about 2 days, drove all around the island. The only bad thing was the weather, so we only got in about 3 good hours of no rain. Interesting beach and bay area with plenty of sight seeing places. We...More

Backpacking stoves are permitted at your campsite -- as always use caution, remember that you are the fire department while you are on the island. Any open flame fire such as a campfire or bonfire must be built on the... More

You find conch shells everywhere, nowhere and rarely. We didn't find one. We said a single passenger on our ferry of about 100 found one. No one location routinely has more shells than others. Propelled by storms and tides... More

Yes, but in certain places the island has very strong currents that can easily pull a swimmer out to sea. If you ask the captain on the boat, he can point out the dangerous places, particularly on one side of the island. The... More
