- Sue LMyrtle Beach, South Carolina839 contributionsInteresting locationTo reach this location, you go through security gates, id, purpose. They let us on through but with restrictions of what mainly not to be photographing, which is fine. I understand about the security aspect. We didn't spend a tremendous amount of time in the area but did appreciate what it meant.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- dorsalmoFlorissant, Missouri1,198 contributionsInteresting historical siteThe rangers at the visitor center were very helpful and knowledgeable. We walked down Bathtub Row and saw the various buildings, including the museum, lodge, and one of the houses. The docent in the house that's open was a wealth of knowledge too. Since we had recently seen the movie, we especially enjoyed seeing the actual sites.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- Robert BMassanutten, Virginia397 contributionsManhattan ProjectA very interesting and historic sight. I wish we had more time to explore. It’s part of the national park system but also has a local museum attached. The museum costs 5 dollars and we just didn’t have time. The buildings are original and the grounds are nice. We had a picnic lunch by the lake.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 May 2024

Highlights for us was going inside of Hans Bethe’s home and peeking into Oppenheimer’s (I hear they are getting it ready to open to the public). - KathrinePennsylvania632 contributionsMust see after watching Oppenheimer movieWe saw the Oppenheimer movie and knew we wanted to visit Los Alamos when in Santa Fe. The ride to Los Alamos up the mountain was pretty. The town itself is small and walkable. We started at the NP Visitor Center and had a ranger who was very knowledgeable about the Manhattan Project. There are small displays in the visitor center. There is also a museum on property to visit - costs $5 but has lots of history. You can go inside the Fuller Lodge Boys school and the Hans Bethe House. The Oppenheimer house is on property but there is no entry. We also went to the Bradbury Science Museum which had a room and displays on the nuclear bomb. Worth spending 1/2 a day here.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 June 2024
- Craig PMentor, Ohio40 contributionsLots of history from a critical time in our pastCool site and lots of history. Presentation from ranger was very helpful although you had to use a lot of imagination. Actually only a couple buildings remain from the '40's. And most of the sites and park are not open to public as they are now part of the super-secret Los Alamos National lab. Not sure if it is worth the drive from Santa Fe.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 June 2024

One can debate what was done here and why and if the scientists really realized what they were doing but the actual park on it's own merits is incredibly well done and worthwhile visit. From the lodge, the museum, the pond, the bathtub row of houses... the original farming area small wooden house and the rock pit houses.. it's all here the last 1000 years very interesting.

the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos is a must see. It does a great job describing the Manhattan Project with multimedia but also explaining difficult Science in a way that's engaging for adults. Most science museums are not up to date or geared for kids only. Nuclear medicine, nanotechnology, cutting edge fuels in details. There's a lot interactive for kids too.

While the museum or any similar parts to this attraction were not open in March 2021, I greatly enjoyed spending outdoor time around Ashley Pond. The natural beauty of the park is underrated. The picnic benches, trails, fountains, and green spaces are of the utmost quality and beauty. It’s such a nice location to cycle, jog, hang out with friends, and experience the atmosphere of Los Alamos. This had been my first time visiting the city, and it certainly won’t be my last.
Please take my word for it and check out this park! It’s free, it’s safe, and it’s amazing!

The MPNHP is closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, so we did not get to go inside. However, there is a Los Alamos Visitors Center in the same building. The lady there gave us plenty of information about the historical landmarks in the area. We had a great visit to the Los Alamos History Museum across the street.

There is a walking trail across the street from the visitors center that has markers in front of several sites related to the Manhattan Project. It is an easy, leisurely walk. There is also a replica guard checkpoint for photo ops a few miles drive to the entrance to Los Alamos.

Can someone explain the difference between: Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Bradbury Science Museum, Los Alamos History Museum. We will be in Los Alamos for 1 day, should we plan to visit all 3? The reason for our visit is mainly for the Manhattan Project site.
Written 25 November 2022
Sorry to answer late. We visited also primarily for the Manhattan Project history. We started at the National Historic Park visitor office. The guys there were extremely informative and happy to go into history of the detail of the area. They also gave us a walking tour brochure to follow. The Los Alamos History Museum is also worth a visit. It goes into detail of what the area was used for before the Manhattan project, as well as more information about the Manhattan project. Then we went back to the park visitor center to ask follow up questions. We did not visit the Bradbury Science museum.

How much time should I allow to visit this place?
Written 18 September 2017
I agree with the other comments, an hour should be adequate. Unless you are really into history, the museum is an easy to do tour.
