- Traveler129645566803 contributionsStunning viewsFabulous views fairly easy hike but be sure to stop many times to soak up the calming energy. Note that several of the steps are taller than normal steps but manageable. Go all the way to the end of the trail for best views.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 October 2023
- LovtorunKansas City, Missouri663 contributionsWorth exploring both sectionsWe explored two major areas here. We arrived at Island in the Sky mid morning on a Wednesday. Somewhat busy, lots of people on the short trails. We were able to park in every trailhead lot and enjoyed several short hikes. Mesa arch, Aztec butte, Whale rock, Upheaval dome, Grandview overlook. All involved some climbing and elevation. All were somewhat busy. On a Friday morning we drove to the Needles area, Elephant hill trailhead and hiked the Chesler park loop 11 miles. Parking area busy at 8:30 but once we started we saw nobody until on the way back. The needles area is amazing. Worth driving from Moab.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023
- Kiara SChester, United Kingdom1,038 contributionsBlown away by the vastness and beautyI was oblivious to how vast and stunning this landscape is. It can’t be captured in images - I needs to be experienced. The GuideAlong app was invaluable for providing information - best $10 you can spend. Mother Nature is the most miraculous and patient artist. There are no words to adequately describe the grand views.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023
- Donna BSapphire, North Carolina97 contributionsGlad we cameFabulous views and very helpful guides at the Visitor Center. Although it’s near Arches the topography is totally different. We thought we were traveling off season but it turns out fall is their busiest time. We waited an hour just to get into the park… there was only one person manning the entrance gate. Also the plumbing is primitive …basically just outhouses.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 October 2023
- RBonTheLakeYork, South Carolina660 contributionsGrand View Point Overlook is worth the admission! Spectacular viewsCame here after spending the morning at Dead Horse State Park. It’s just down the road (maybe 7-8 miles). Arrived around 11am. Had to wait 15 minutes or so to enter the park (the Island in the Sky District). Went straight to the Grand View Point Overlook – and the name is appropriate. Grand it is! Spectacular views – especially if you take the 2 mile up and back trail from the parking lot. Just awesome. 360 degree views from the end. An easy walk for the most part – you have to climb the rocks at the end. We spent ½ hour or so just sitting at the top. It WAS crowded but not as much as at the parking lot. This is the only stop we did. Mesa Arch was too crowded and since we had hiked 7 miles today already we called it quits.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- Cryptic_TouristSaint Louis, Missouri1,051 contributionsBiggest surprise of the Mighty FiveSo I’ll be honest guys, whenever I was researching the Mighty Five this park was the one I was least excited for. But! It’s truly stunning. My group loved this park and the many great lookouts and pull offs, which is really great for people with mobility issues. We did hike the Mesa Arch trail later in the day and there was people, but way less than first thing in the morning. It’s a beautiful place! The visitor center is small and only has pit toilets. We got there first thing in the morning and had no wait to get in, but by about 10:00 AM there was quite the line to get into the park. Do not skip this one!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 October 2023
- jrzj42Ellicott City, Maryland1,736 contributionsA must do when in MoabSpectacular national park located just outside the town of Moab Utah. Every view is equal to or better than the previous. Even better to come back late at night to see the Milky Way. To get into the park, I drove the Shafer Trail out of Moab via Potash road. The drive (you really need a high clearance vehicle, like a Jeep or pickup truck, to be on the Shafer trail) provided an additional experience of being in a part of the canyon, instead of looking down in it. Spend the time to drive the 12 miles beyond the visitors center out to Grand View Point Overlook for an expansive view of Canyonlands. If you have a high-clearance vehicle, take Long Canyon road back into Moab. Both Shafer and Long Canyon roads are easy, low technical roads. Enjoy!!!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- 1xPlorWorld138 contributionsExceeded my expectations!Absolutely heaven on earth. I visited on the winter and on the right moment when its snowing. The whole place covered in white snow and foggy everywhere. There were no much people, seem like everyone rushed to get out of here before heavy snow but i decided to stay overnight. I was scared for the first 5 minutes but the beauty, strength and spirit of this park took away my worrisome. After that I just enjoyed every second. I could say this is the most incredible view of one of the earth's spectacular wonders! You can drive right up to most of the view points seeing the scenic sights or have potions for a short hiking like Mesa Arch( 0.5 miles = 30 minutes), White Rim Overlook( 1.8 miles = 1.5 hours), Grand View Point( 2 miles = 1.5 hours), Grand View Point( 3.6 miles = 2 hours). Oh, there's nowhere to buy anything so you have to bring in what you need, but don't litter the park!Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 30 October 2023
- njoireading247Johns Creek, Georgia446 contributionsVast canyonsThis definitely different from The Arches; you are in the car more and the hikes are much harder except for a couple "walks" to vantage points. The area is quite large but if you are not there for a day hike or camping you can see almost everything in a few hours. Facilities are sparse and you need to bring your own water and food.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 November 2023
- KayakDCWashington DC, District of Columbia281 contributionsGlorious Park; Don’t Miss Needles District!Wow. Canyonlands is just amazing. We spent one day in the Islands in the Sky district then a second day I. The Needles district. We hesitated about the latter, but we’re so glad we did. Both sections afford wonderful vistas, even from the car. We did lots of short hikes and a couple of the longer ones. Of them all, the 2.5 mile Sliprock trail in the Needles district stands out for its beauty and the fun of the Sliprock itself. One of us is in her seventies; the other in her eighties. But Sliprock was accessible for both. Drove from Moab is beautiful in its own right, especially the section that goes through Bears Ears. Don’t miss this park—especially the Needles section. NO PEOPLE this time of year.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 November 2023

After the hour long wait with two toll takers at Arches we headed over to Canyon Lands. Guess what...Canyon Lands only has ONE guy taking entry fees for thousands of people trying to get in. The back up was like two miles. What I call "cigarette traffic"...you can get out of your car and smoke a cigarette and the traffic wouldn't move. (quit smoking 40 years ago) People were going into the bushes to pee. Some got out and walked. Totally ridiculous. What a waste of gas, think of the pollution. The government can't hire more than one dude to take entry fees? It took well over an hour, and I had a free America pass!
Once you get in the place it's beautiful. The three main overlooks are spectacular and worth the time and effort.

We really enjoyed Canyonlands but we went to Arches the day before and just enjoyed Arches more. I guess it depends on your taste but we found hiking more enjoyable at Arches while Canyonlands was easier to see because you could enjoy a lot of the sites from the stops along the roads. Our favorite stop and hike was easily "Mesa Arch." The scenic view from this spot is amazing! The hike was short too (about 1 miles roundtrip).
The Visitor Center was open but the store was very small compared to the Visitor Center at Arches. No exhibits were open but I didn't see much anyways. The bathrooms are located outside not attached to the building.
Some of the stops we enjoyed most were "Grand View Point" and "White Rim Overlook." Both stops are easy to see from the short walk from the parking lot.
The cost was $30 per vehicle and it was located more out of the way compared to Arches. ( would guess it was about 25 miles off Highway).

The entire state of Utah is overpopulated and the amount of people crammed into already dense cities is only becoming worse.
And then when I want to go camping or hiking to get away from the crowds the density/crowdedness is even worse. No matter what time of the year you go, now you will ALWAYS experience crowds. Going to Moab or anywhere in Southern Utah is a complete joke. Covid-19 really did kill Utah with all of the out or staters who migrated here.
What used to be reality can now only be made up by telling stories of the way Utahs Mother Nature used to be.
Now there are lines everywhere; roads to Ski resorts or hiking trails, zero parking if you don’t leave at 6am to beat the crowds, the lakes, the parks, the crowded roads with CRAZY and impatient drivers.
It’s hard to relax….anywhere.

Canyonlands National Park is another beautiful and breathtaking place to visit in Utah. Our first stop was at the visitor center which has a small museum, helpful staff and a well stocked gift shop. We then headed out into the national park and again another beautiful and breathtaking place. Add this place to your list if you haven't been, you won't be disappointed.

Another park that doesn't really need a review, but it is important to note that you see much better views here than at Arches. Arches is pretty much just arches. Canyonlands is amazing with beautiful views even just on the way there. The sky was hazy when I went so my pics from the morning were not as good as pictures I took later in the day.
Got to the visitor center at 9AM and bought a few nice items. The ranger was nice and recommended a trail at the end of the park. It was only a mile, but a LONG mile in the heat. Exhausting and not much shade. However there were incredible views all over the park. Lots of scenic overlooks. No pets are allowed, but when I was there at least two idiots brought their dogs. If you can't follow the rules then don't visit the park. Not that difficult.

Overcrowded and overrated. That's how I would describe Canyonlands National Park.
Yes, the scenery is epic. But the reality is this is an overcrowded and overrated national park. The line of cars to enter the one checkpoint was more than 1 hour long at 2 pm on a Sunday afternoon in the fall. I shudder to think of the line on holiday weekends or in the late spring and summer during peak tourism.
It doesn't help that the National Park Service continues to operate 1950s-style checkpoints to collect fees from visitors or check passes from those with NPS annual passes. It's 2024. Surely, there is a better and more efficient system -- a system that doesn't cause traffic to backlog and create 1-hour waits.
Skip the line. Drive over to Grand Junction and do the Colorado National Monument. Or drive the John Brown Canyon Road from Moab to Gateway, Colorado and then drive Highway 141 along the Dolores River down to Nucla. The scenary is basically the same with much, much less people.

What an awesome place to see!! You must view it in person to appreciate God's beauty first-hand. This was our first time visiting the south of Utah and I would recommend this adventure to everyone to appreciate the beauty of this state.
Thank you, God, for the experience.

This park has something for everyone on many different levels. While I really enjoyed the Island in the Sky unit, it was the Needles unit that really captivated me. Just the ride in with the towering walls on either side build the air of excitement. It's all good and offers a great variety of vistas.

Being in the world of the design I fell in love with the play of depth in this park. I was taken away by the massive voids in the landscape. This park is just beautiful; if it weren't for scorching sun I would stay here hours just sketching, meditating and enjoying the moment above everything. If in Moab please visit this park it really deserves so much more love than it gets. Yet, I guess that's where its beauty lies not having to deal with too many people and just feeling like you have these immense plots of lands for yourself it makes you think how grand the United States is. If you have time definitely experience the off roads and view the canyons from the bottom plateaus rather than just the top. I love it!

Canyonlands National Park is 337,598 acres of what seems to be red sandstone. There are four distinct districts. (1) Island in the Sky which is the most popular and accessible with many overlooks, paved roads, hiking trails and the White Run Road for 4X4 vehicles, (2( The Needles which offers back country experiences, (3) The Maze which is the most remote of all the districts and (4) The Green and Colorado rivers. There are flat water river options and Cataract Canyon offers a white water experience. There are no roads which directly link the four districts. Traveling between districts requires 2-6 hours so most people choose one district to explore at a time. Additionally there are only a few places to cross the Green or Colorado rivers.
Places of interest include: Peekaboo Canyon where you can see rock paintings, Tower Run is where the ancestral Puebloan's built their settlements, Orange Cliffs and Horseshoe Canyon offer amazing geology, Native American Art panels and hiking.
If you go on the Canyonlands National Park website, you can print out their hiking trail maps. This area is primitive and desolate so use all necessary precautions and equip yourself for this adventure. Your phone GPS is not going to work.

My husband and I would like to take our sons to Canyonlands. HOwever, we have a 9 year old with ASD who sometimes likes to run off. Therefore, we removed Bryce and Grand Canyon from our list. Can anyone tell us of any hiking trails in Canyonlands without drop off's where if he ran he would not get hurt?

We rented a Twisted Jeep, drove a few of the 4WD roads, he’d probably like the views from the Jeep.

Knowing how crowded it can be, what are the chances of getting a good photo of sunrise at Mesa Arch, even if you get there early? Wouldn't somebody always be in your picture?
Written 22 January 2021
We had no one in any of our pictures- and we took many of them. People we genuinely helpful and accommodating - especially if asked. Get there about 45 min before sunrise and you’ll have no competition for set up.

How are the Utah national parks in the winter? We're planning a visit in mid- to late- February and hope the snow won't be a problem. Any advice?
Written 27 January 2020
Cedar Breaks National Monument and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon are closed for the season due to snow accumaulation at their higher altitudes. Bryce Canyon's rim also ranges from 8-9000 feet on the Pahsunguint Plateau, but the visitor center remains open year round. The scenic drive and other roads and trails within the park can close at any time during the winter/spring season due to weather conditions, so check the park website. Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Vermillion Cliffs and Glen Canyon NRA remain open year round, although some facilities and trails may be cl osed. Again, check each park's website for current information. Overall, you shouldn't have much of a problem because Utah's canyon country gets a lot less snow than you do in Golden. Remember the blizzard of '83 or the series of spring snowstorms in 2007? I do, and that is why I no longer live in the front range.

Ad Island in the sky ci sono bei trekking da fare? ( che non siano troppo lunghi e fatcosi). O si visita tutti scendendo e salendo sull'auto?
Grazie!

Canyonlands is Utah's largest national park and it's good to be aware of what it can offer to each other, in order to take advantage of the time available in the most intelligent way possible.
If you have a couple of hours to visit the area, as well as reach the sights by car, you could also do the short loop-trail (less than a mile walk in total) that takes you to Mesa Arch, a wonderful natural arch right on the edge of the mesa, perfect setting for the sunset. The trail's attack is about 10 km after the Visitor Center.
Or you could take another fascinating trail, the Upheaval Dome Trail, which leads to a huge crater that is said to have been caused by the fall of a meteorite. The trail's attack (which is a little more than a mile in total, but can also be traveled on to a lesser extent) is reached by continuing the road past the Mesa Arch car park for about 8 km.
sorry for the bad translation
