About
From the prominence of Dead Horse Point, 2,000 feet above a gooseneck in the Colorado River, an ever changing landscape unfurls. Immense vertical cliffs meet with canyons carved by ice, water and wind creating a visual masterpiece. Plants and animals surviving on the edge of existence face many challenges of extreme conditions within this high desert environment. Stories of ancient hunters, resting along the cliff tops while knapping chert in preparation for the next hunt, and cowboys of the late 1800's, chasing wild mustangs onto Dead Horse Point, using the narrow neck to block off the natural corral . What story will you discover on your visit to Dead Horse Point State Park?

- RBonTheLakeYork, South Carolina661 contributionsEast/West Rim trail was very nice (easy)We did the East/West Rim trail combination: Arrived at 7:30am and nobody was in the parking lot at the visitor’s center. $20 admission to the park is well worth it. Flush toilets (vs. pit toilets at the National Park). There are great views almost the entire trail. At one point we saw a white tailed jack rabbit which was cool. Trail is marked with paint along the way. The overlook to the Colorado River is beautiful. This is an easy hike – a little over 5 miles to make the entire loop. Spent about 2.5 hours total in the park.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- ServiceprofLexington, South Carolina1,379 contributionsIf nothing else - view Horseshoe Canyon and Colorado RiverGreat self drive way to visit the park. Many outstanding vistas and plenty of photo opportunities. Was especially impressed by Horseshoe Canyon with Colorado River meandering thru Canyon. Would recommend this park for visit. Although it is a state park it has many great viewing opportunities and it is very much less crowded.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee3,939 contributionsBeautiful vistas!Dead Horse Point State Park is a state park that is located adjacent to Canyonlands National Park. It has a separate entrance and has separate fees (National Park passes not accepted here), but it's 100% worth it to visit here even if you've already been to Canyonlands. The views here are just as good if not better than Canyonlands and the vistas in this part of Utah are remarkable. There are lots of hiking trails here as well and we wish we left more time to explore here as we would have liked to have done more hiking here. The park is nicely set up overall and it's a wonderful place to visit when exploring this park of Utah!Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 December 2023
- budzy829Henderson, Nevada685 contributionsAwesome View!I knew we will regret if we didn't stop by on our way from Canyonlands. Always curious why this is similar to Horseshoe Bend. Honestly, I find the view here more interesting. We actually stayed here longer than previous overlooks we visited!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 March 2024
- SLPmomOxnard, California515 contributionsReverential RespectAdd me to the list of TA reviewers saying this is a must do. The views here are breathtaking! The views from the visitor center were nice, but just a drive over to the Dead Horse Point Overlook and that view was even more spectacular. The views make the trip in to this park at the cost of $20 definitely worth it. Lots of restrooms too.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 March 2024
- Selena FSalt Lake City, Utah82 contributionsScenic viewDead Horse Point State Park is incredible! The overlooks give you a bird's-eye view of the canyon and Colorado River. - HansKwadendamme, The Netherlands4,245 contributionsNice easy walks, great viewsThe hikes or rather walks you can make are easy to moderate, the views are from the blue potassium process plant side of the ridge basically the same although the view angle is different. Some trails have been marked with paint, so it is easier to stay on the trail. Besides that I really like this SP. you can rent a bike and also there are several camping sites.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2024
- TacoloverWinnipeg, Canada11,338 contributionsBeautifulThe park is just beautiful!!! The views are out of this world!! The only disappointment about it all is the cost of $20 per car to get in for the short drive through… we did no hiking due to back issues so just drive through with stopping at all view points to take pictures. I found the entrance fee a bit much for what it’s worth.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024
- MelvinPusfingerTemecula, California693 contributionsWorth a visit, but not what you experience at the national parksMany people do the double, namely, visit Canyonlands National Park, and then proceed onto the state park. Approximately 12 miles from the Island in the Sky entrance to the state park. The entrance fee is $20. The visitor center is quite small, but it does have a a shop that is well stocked with T-shirts, magnets, and other things that tourist like when they visit these kinds of places. There are some spectacular views. Not particularly different from what you might already have seen at Canyonlands. But this includes some good views of the Colorado River. I would not consider this to be a must see place if you are in the Moab region. But if you are visiting one of the nearby national parks, this is certainly worth a couple of hours. Or you can spend several hours here hiking.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024
- Mark G5 contributionsDefinitely visit this parkThis is a gem of a park. The entry fee seems steep, but it is well worth it. The restrooms were super clean, the visitor center rangers helpful, and the views just as good or better than some venues in Canyonlands NP.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 September 2024

This is a fantastic state park to see on the way into Canyonlands. We stopped here to let the dogs have a car break. They are allowed on state park trails but not national parks. I understand "canyons" and that the edges are sometimes drop offs but this place really scared me. At the main lookout, there are guardrails or stone walls but walk any further on the trails and the walls just disappear. I'm sure it would be fine if I didn't have the kids with me. It just made me scared to follow the trails and get so close to the edge. In some places, the drop offs are 2,000 feet down! Also, there were young adults walking out onto ledges and overhanging rocks to have their pictures taken or take a selfie. This also made me feel very anxious and nervous. Its a stunning view just beware of the edge!

This state park is very nice but it offers one of the best views I've ever seen with the 2,000 feet overlook of the Colorado River. Visiting the park just to see this view is worth the price of admission ($20 per vehicle). The Visitor Center was open for the store portion but the exhibits were closed due to the virus.
Visiting this park is convenient if your traveling from Moab to Canyonlands National Park. We spent about 2 - 3 hours at this state park and thought that was enough. We did see some campgrounds at the park but the areas look pretty bare but I can't really comment on the campgrounds since we didn't camp there.
If visiting this area and have the time I would recommend visiting here and seeing the beautiful overview of the Colorado River.

A half hour ride outside of Moab is a great option for mountain biking with views of the Canyonlands national Park. On this return trip to Dead Horse, my son and I (in the beginner-intermediate range of MTB experience), brought our rented bikes to Dead Horse and took off.
Our experience was limited to four hours of beginner and intermediate trails. We loved it. The trails were well marked, the terrain varied and pleasantly challenging at our level with innumerable opportunities to view the Colorado River and the adjacent national Park.
Well there are other world class bike parks in and around Moab, I would not hesitate to return to dead horse to explore more of the terrain. Your $20/vehicle entrance fee covers you for 3 days.

When we were on a Hummer tour we asked our tour guide being a local what he would recommend and he mentioned Dead Horse State Park. So we made our way over to Dead Horse State Park. It’s amazing! Highly recommend visiting it.
I would also recommend getting there early so you have the whole day and not to rush the beauty. Bring cash for the $20 entrance fee. You can hike or bike. We hiked and planned to bike but ran out of time and energy. We did see lots of families heading out on their bikes. I didn’t see food so pack a lunch to bring along and have a picnic. Wear sunscreen, bring water and wear good hiking shoes.

We came here to walk around just after sunrise on a morning with some clouds due to the fires in the West. The changing colors were awesome and views were incredible.
Dead Horse and Canyonlands are much like viewing The Grand Canyon .... without the crowds and excessive costs. The Moab area in general offers enough scenery with Arches National Park., Corona Arch, Canyonlands and a few more to skip going way out of the way to Grand Canyon - where I have been twice - but the Moab area you can come back again and again.
If you head to the parks early for sunrise you can get in before they charge admission - and I also have a Senior Lifetime Pass which is a good deal

We traveled to this amazing park for my cousins wedding. The views are unforgettable! This is a must see park in Moab. You won't be disappointed! Sunset was breathtaking and in my opinion one of the prettiest I have ever seen. It is $20 to enter the park and your visit ticket is good to renter for three days.

A trip to Moab is not complete without Sunrise from Dead Horse Point State Park. We visited twice. The first time was in the afternoon for various hikes and the second was the next morning at 5:30 a.m. it was well worth getting up that early for the spectacular show that we were treated to. How gorgeous it was to see the sun peek over the mountains and then the light flood the canyon. Don't miss it!

My family visited 10 national parks on a 10 day roadtrip and decided to add Dead Horse onto our itinerary on our way to Canyonlands. This was my favorite stop of our entire trip. The canyon is beautiful and the pictures we took at the lookout point turned out amazing. We will definitely stop here again if ever in the area.

This place is amazing if you want to get a stunning view of the Colorado river and the canyons. The silence that reigns in this place is surprising. On the sunset you see a lot of people trying to get a good spot to enjoy it. Definitely a place to visit.

Went here to see the sunset which frankly was a little disappointing as we had hoped it would cause the surrounding canyons to be lit up in "sunset colors". There is plenty of space to spread out so you can't sit here for a long time and watch the sun set. There are a couple of shaded picnic areas but they aren't in a space from where you can see the sunset. It's about 45 minutes from Moab and has a $20 entry fee per car.

I'm interested in driving to the overlook at Dead Horse Point. However, my wife is deathly afraid on any road that has dropoffs on the side. What is the drive like to the overlook?
Written 17 August 2022
The road to Dead Horse Point State Park is about 33 miles off the highway, most without drop offs, but as you climb any mountain you will encounter some drop offs or very steep hill sides. I would say that its a small percentage of the drive that has steep hillsides. I believe it is worth the drive if your wife can check her emotions on the drive. Now the overlooks are very high, its like the Grand Canyon, but the views are so awesome definitely worth it!

Can you drop your trailer in the parking lot when staying in a Monekopli yurt? I know you can ride but when staying in the yurt? Going Next Month.

Sorry I can't help - I have no idea - try finding a contact with the Parks system.

Planning to stay in a yurt with the family. They are equipped with a propane gas grill. Is there a nearby convenience store where we can buy food to grill, or at least water and ice to purchase in case we run low. I'd hate to have to drive back to Moab once we are situated.
Written 28 June 2021
You are probably out of luck having a convenient food source close to Dead Horse Point State Park. You’ll have to backtrack to highway 191 towards Moab. Moab is about 31 miles from your Yurt destination. There are two sites at the park. They also advise you bring water since it’s trucked in from Moab. Are you able to pick up supplies on your way to the state park? I carried my dry products in with me when I visited. For wet items I went into town.

Where is the best place to watch the sunset within this park?
Written 31 January 2021
Honestly any where in that are would be amazing! Try to stay on the high ground.

Hi! Just wondering...from the point of entrance to DHSP, how far further(or how long) do you have to drive (once inside the entrance) to the river bend overlook? Or is it immediately at the entrance? We want to be there for a sunrise in September and want to make sure to time it right. Thanks!!!
Written 7 July 2019
If I remember correctly, the visitor center was about a mile from the entrance booth (closed when we arrived for sunset but you could still use bathrooms - plus there's a coffee shop there)and the lookout area wasn't that much further. It's very nicely done with bathrooms, a covered area at the viewpoint and lots of places to sit.

I'm camping at the Wingate Campground next month. Anyone know of an RV Water Fill Station between I-70 and DHSP? I don't want to have to drive all the way into Moab if I don't have to. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

We stayed at Shady Acres RV also, and we loved it. You can fill there for a fee. I think it was $5.00

Is it possible to get to Thelma and Louise point without a 4x4? If not, are there any tours that can take me there?
Written 21 April 2019
WE used Adrift adventure tour and had a great tour of canyon lands park including the famous place where Thelma andLouise last scene was shot .
We also visited the museum at red cliff lodge where it was interesting to watch videos about the shooting of that and other movies

Where do you rent a bike? Is there a shuttle? Can this be done in November? I have a group of 6.
Written 26 July 2018
There are bike rental places in Moab, Utah which is the "gateway" town for Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point. I don't know a specific name, I guess just "google" it. I am not aware of a "shuttle" but there are various tours available, again out of Moab. Hope this helps.
