- RBonTheLakeYork, South Carolina661 contributionsLots of people but well worth itAnother awesome hike! The arch at the end is HUGE and we sat there for about 20-30 minutes. There were A LOT of people on this hike, but we did start later since we did the Grandstaff Trail before this one. This hike is pretty easy, however, it DID have a section with chains (I did well with them) and a short ladder that wasn’t difficult at all (mainly because it didn’t have a steep dropoff!) This hike was definitely worth it.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- phil pNorthallerton, United Kingdom118 contributionsVery good hike to a fabulous ArchThis hike is outside Arches NP and so is free, and to be honest is better than any of the Arches in the Park except Delicate Arch. It’s an interesting hike, all the hard work is in the first 1/2 mile, then it levels out, you have a ladder and a short section where you hang onto a chain to negotiate but even for me, 67 years old, it was easy. The arch is spectacular and the photos don’t do it justice, we started about 9 am before it got too warm and virtually had the arch to ourselves bar an Indian couple from London who were very pleasant and took some photos for us. We spent 30 mins there and were up and back by lunch. If you like this hike also go to Fisher Towers but not in the same day.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- caml77Grand Valley, Canada597 contributionsStunning Corona ArchGreat hike up the hill, over the train tracks, through the sheep gates, up the chain, climb the ladder, and over the slick rock. A large spectacular walk under arch. Nice in late afternoon. The bonus was the Bow Tie Arch nearbyVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Previa1994Chicago, Illinois6,652 contributionsCertainly worth the effortThe Corona Arch Trail is a wonderful hike near Moab. It is on BLM Land and is free to access. It's just over two miles of gorgeous hike to the arch with some small sections up an incline with chains and a ladder. The start of the trail from the parking lot has a small but steep climb to the top of a mesa where the Potash Railroad Spur goes through a beautiful mountain cutout. The rest of the trail is a gradual ascent. Along with Corona Arch we also get to visit Bow Tie Arch. There is an additional out-and-back trail (about a mile long) to Pinto Arch which is not as spectacular. On the way back to the parking lot, one can enjoy expansive views of the Colorado River and the lush green of the river banks. A hike to see Corona Arch is well worth the effort.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- DontStopExploringWinnipeg, Canada2,198 contributionsCorona ArchCorona Arch is a moderately difficult trail. We started out early on a busy weekend. It starts off with rocky steps and quickly levels out. There’s a worn path that traverses a rocky hill which can be a bit unnerving and an area with a near vertical climb with shallow footholds and a chain handrail. If you manage to get passed this there’s the last obstacle of a rickety ladder. The arches are beautiful. If anyone has a fear of heights or exposure, I think it would be difficult. It’s definitely challenging.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2024

The hike to Corona Arch is a beautiful, moderate hike. There are some steeper sections where people with mobility issues may have problems. These sections have a ladder and cables anchored into the rock to provide assistance. The trail is mostly well marked by green paint every 10-15 feet on the rock below your feet. We hiked it up at sunset, hung around the arch, then proceeded back past the ladder just before dark. We relaxed about 1/2 back to the parking area to enjoy the wonderful stars and minimal light pollution. Overall a wonderful hike.

Easy 3-mile hike (there and back) to Corona Arch. For hikers with good physical fitness, a total walking time of one hour is realistic, but it can definitely be done a little faster. If you're more leisurely, it can easily take twice as long. In any case, take at least 1 liter of water with you per person. It's unbelievable that some people feel like they can complete this hike without water. There is no shade (except at the very beginning and under the stone arch itself). Otherwise, the path is really easy, the two scrambling sections can theoretically be avoided, pay attention to nature and yourself. If you are not good and stable on your feet, don't do the hike! On the subject of dogs: I have no idea why you have to take your four-legged friend with you everywhere. The trail is not a problem for dogs, but the lack of shade is even more so. You are not doing your four-legged loyal friend any favors if you want to do this hike in 30 degree heat. On the subject of small children: the same ;)
Pinto Arch: you can see this stone arch early on at the top left at the beginning of the hike. It is rarely visited and can be easily combined with an additional 1.2 miles (there and back).
Conclusion: the Corona Arch is no longer an insider tip. Since it is outside the national park, it is free. However, with the number of visitors, regulations are becoming increasingly important. A huge parking lot including a toilet at the starting point makes the trail seem particularly easy. However, there were also many people who never made it near the stone arch. So it would be better to go to Arches National Park. There are many stone arches there that are really easy to reach.

For me, 59 and carrying more weight than I should, found the hike to be challenging. My wife who is in better shape and other younger people we ran into on the trail seemed to be manage very well. Awesome views and some adrenaline pumping moments make this a memorable hike. We actually got caught in a rain/hail storm on the hike back. We had to take shelter under a pinion tree! The rain added a degree of difficulty but we made it. Along the the drive, stop at Thompson Springs to view the petroglyphs.

We really enjoyed this hike! We started at about 10:30 AM, well after most folks have already come and gone. Despite the heat and lack of shade, we made it up to the arch in 40 minutes, not too bad for a pair of 60-somethings. There were only a handful of others there, which was nice. We hiked over to Pinto Arch on the way back, and found that a more challenging hike. Definitely worthwhile to do both.

This was the first hike we did after arriving in Moab. We wanted to avoid Arches NP on the weekend due to huge crowds so we did this hike and it was beautiful. Wasn't crowded at all when we hit the trailhead at 7:30am We basically had the arch to ourselves for a good 1/2 hour to just sit and enjoy the beauty of it. Easy hike with one sketchy section with a ladder and a chain but totally doable.

I much preferred this hike to any from the national park. Had a little bit of everything along the trail. Sand, rock, railroad tracks, sun, shade, ladders and ropes! This was a great hike and we saw many families doing it with young children and dogs. Would definitely recommend making the trip out to this hike if you were in Moab.

My kids would rate this hike a 5 but I’m rating it a 4 because the last leg made me a nervous wreck. I was really surprised how many families were hiking with kiddos in backpacks. It can be done but bring lots of water and be prepared for a good bit of sideways walking.
It was a hard hike on my husbands knees due to the slope. Honestly it was beautiful but I just kept envisioning my son falling off the side toward the end so I was not able to truly enjoy the experience. You can see the arch without finishing the last more “dangerous” bit but the kids really wanted to climb the chain.
We saw lots of lizards and flowering cacti on the hike back down.

This was my second time to Moab and 2nd time doing this hike. It's one of my favs. It's an easy to moderate hike that I would suggest bringing water as there is little shade. I've gone early morning both times and it's never been overly packed. If you only do one hike, this is it!

No you can not see Corona Arch from the car. It is about a 30-45 minute walk from the parking lot and with some obstacles that you have to overcome to get to the Arch. Not that the obstacles are difficult but it certainly isn’t easy if you have mobility issues or very younger children.

Are Corona and Bowtie two arches that you can do on the same trail? How long does the trail to Corona Arch and Bowtie Arch take?
Written 13 April 2018
Yes, they are close together. I think it took us about 1.5 hours.

Where do you park to take this hike? Is it at the arches national park?
Written 20 July 2017
Just north of Moab there is a turn off for Hwy 279 potash road you go west about 10 miles and there is a parking area for the arch on the right hand side.
Written 20 July 2017
Wondering if the road to the trailhead is paved - doable for a small rental car if not ?
thanks!
Written 3 May 2017
Yes, it's paved. The trailhead parking lot is dirt, but it's right off the road which is paved. It's a really easy drive from downtown Moab or from Arches NP.

Would it be safe and prudent to do this hike carrying on baby on your back in a carrier?
Written 17 April 2017
Hi
My answer would be it depends. There are a couple places where you need to step up using a cable. It is a very short step up. If you regularly hike with a baby, I would think you would be ok.
Written 17 April 2017
what time do the national parks open ?
Written 5 April 2016
National parks do not open and close. You can enter and exit 24 hours a day. This time of year the visitor center is open from 7:30am to 6pm. As for seeing or doing anything at Arches National Park you will want to be there daylight hours and know that sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful.

Great info on Corona Arch and Bowtie--Thanks. Is a 4 WD vehicle necessary for this excursion? (Including the intersection with the Potash Area. It sounds like a trip down Potaash Rd wants a 4 WD.)
Written 8 March 2016
Potash Rd is a paved road to and past the Corona Arch trailhead. Any regular vehicle will work fine.

Trailhead Location: On Utah Scenic Byway 279, 10 miles west of the Utah 279/U.S. 191 junction.
Route Description: From the parking lot on the north side of the highway follow the trail up to the visitor register box near the railroad; please register. Cross the railroad track and follow an old roadbed up through a gap in the rim. From the gap, follow the cairns up the wash for about 100 yards where the trail swings to the left.
Follow the trail and cairns over a low sandy pass and then down towards the base of a large cliff. Follow the base of the cliff to the first safety cable and around to the second cable where steps have been cut into the slickrock. Corona Arch is visible from this point. From the top of the second cable, climb the short ladder up over a small ledge and follow the cairns. From this point, it is an easy walk along the broad slickrock bench to the base of Corona Arch.
